X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a commonly used analytical method to quantify lead (Pb), a toxic element, in atmospheric aerosol. The commercially available reference materials used for calibrating XRF do not mimic the concentrations and filter materials of particulate matter (PM) monitoring networks. In this study, we described an aerosol deposition method to generate Pb reference materials (RMs) over a range of concentrations to serve several purposes for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) monitoring networks including laboratory auditing, federal equivalency method evaluation, and calibration and quality control of XRF instruments. The RMs were generated using a laboratory-built aerosol chamber equipped with a federal reference sampler at concentration levels ranging from 0.0125 to 0.70 μg/m3. XRF analysis at UC Davis was demonstrated to be equivalent to a US and EU reference method, inductively coupled plasma—mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), for measuring Pb on RMs following a methodology described in the United States and international standards. The Pb concentrations on subsets of the RMs were verified by three other XRF laboratories with different analyzers and/or quantification methods and were shown to be equivalent to the UC Davis XRF analysis. The generated RMs were demonstrated to have short and long-term stability, satisfying an additional requirement of reference materials.

To determine the influence of storage conditions on potassium iodide (KI) stability, its traditional carrier – iodised table salt and alternative collagen carriers (i.e. iodinated collagen fibre and collagen hydrolysate) were stored at high (90%) and medium (60%) relative humidity of air. At medium humidity, these carriers were additionally stored at limited and unlimited access of air. The stability of KI was estimated by determining iodine retention during storage. The obtained results showed that the storage of iodised table salt resulted in iodine content decrease. The iodine losses in the salt tended to increase at high humidity or unlimited access of air. However, application of collagen preparations as carriers increased the KI stability, reducing iodine losses during storage and making them independent on the storage conditions.  相似文献

The automobile is a metal-dominated complex product, comprising many different materials, and is therefore a good study case for the modeling of recycling streams based on the classical minerals processing approach. In Europe and in many industrial sectors of the world, end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are collected and partly dismantled. The remaining wreck is shredded. During shredding, the wreck is broken into smaller particles, and so the materials it contains are liberated to some extent. After shredding, the particles are fed to a series of automatic physical separation processes. This results in several recovered material streams: ferrous materials, aluminium, copper, zinc, stainless steel and automotive shredder residue (ASR, which consists of mainly nonmetallic materials). Each stream suffers from some degree of contamination by foreign materials due to imperfect separation processes. It should be noted that thermochemical treatment (pyrolysis, gasification, etc.) of complex organic materials is one of the most promising methods of reducing the impact of solid, municipal and industrial wastes from environmental, storage and landfill perspectives, and it can also be used to produce energy. The properties of soldering masks based on epoxyacrylic, epoxymethacrylic esters, and monomers: 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, and triethylene glycol phthalate dimethacrylate have been described. Changes occurring during post-mortem ageing in structure of psoas major and minor (PM) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles of calves, heifers and cows were observed. Samples from muscles taken 3 h after slaughter and after 6 and 12 days of storage at the temperature of 4?°C were analysed using light and transmission electron microscopy. Three hours after slaughter muscle fibres were close to each other and sarcomeres showed normal structure of A- and I-bands, M-lines and Z-disks. The space between myofibrils and sarcolemma and also between single myofibrils in muscle fibres increased during storage. Structure of sarcomeres underwent continuous degradation, length of sarcomeres increased due to enlargement of I-bands accompanied by Z-disk degradation. During ageing structural changes in myofibrils took place faster, were more intensive in muscles of younger animals and were more extensive and faster in PM than in ST muscles.  相似文献

The results of a study on a large pulse surface photopotential of P type silicon electrodes (10 Ω cm) immersed in 0·1 M Na2SO4 solutions of various pH are discussed in the paper. The derivative ?(?s — ?s)/? pH has been determined and has been found to be ?60 mV in the pH range from 1 to 9. The derivative ?(?s — ?b)/? U has been evaluated from theoretical considerations and experimental results to be 0·5 for the studied solutions in the potential range where the dependence of (?s — ?b) on U is linear.  相似文献

To investigate the importance of light on healing and acclimatization, in the present study, grafted watermelon seedlings were exposed to darkness (D) or light, provided by blue (B), red (R), a mixture of R (68%) and B (RB), or white (W; 35% B, 49% intermediate spectra, 16% R) LEDs for 12 days. Survival ratio, root and shoot growth, soluble carbohydrate content, photosynthetic pigments content, and photosynthetic performance were evaluated. Seedling survival was not only strongly limited in D but the survived seedlings had an inferior shoot and root development, reduced chlorophyll content, and attenuated photosynthetic efficiency. RB-exposed seedlings had a less-developed root system. R-exposed seedlings showed leaf epinasty, and had the smallest leaf area, reduced chlorophyll content, and suppressed photosynthetic apparatus performance. The R-exposed seedlings contained the highest amount of soluble carbohydrate and together with D-exposed seedlings the lowest amount of chlorophyll in their scions. B-exposed seedlings showed the highest chlorophyll content and improved overall PSII photosynthetic functioning. W-exposed seedling had the largest leaf area, and closely resembled the photosynthetic properties of RB-exposed seedlings. We assume that, during healing of grafted seedlings monochromatic R light should be avoided. Instead, W and monochromatic B light may be willingly adopted due to their promoting effect on shoot, pigments content, and photosynthetic efficiency.  相似文献

Bovine semitendinosus (ST) muscles aged for 5 and 12 days at 4?°C were roasted at 170?°C to internal temperatures of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90?°C. Microstructural changes in meat were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Texture profile analysis (TPA) and measurements of the shear force values of samples were conducted using a texture analyser. The cooking losses and quantity of total and soluble collagen were also estimated. The structure of intramuscular connective tissue and myofibrillar structure of meat after 5 days of ageing was very regular. In 12-day-aged samples fibrous and myofibrillar structures were less distinct, damages of endomysium tubes appeared and fibres of perimysium were swelled. Ageing of ST muscle for 12 days caused a two-fold increase in the quantity of soluble collagen and a two-fold decrease in the value of TPA parameters-hardness and chewiness, as compared to 5-day-aged samples. The decrease in fibre diameter and sarcomere length during roasting started at 60?°C in 5-day-aged meat and at 50?°C in 12-day-aged samples. The shear force values measured after roasting were lower for 12-day-aged meat than for 5-day-aged samples. The quantity of soluble collagen in roasted meat increased at an internal temperature of 80?°C. At a higher temperature of meat this variable depended on the degree of meat ageing. The cooking losses during roasting of meat were about 3% lower for 12-day-aged than for 5-day-aged samples. In the examined range of internal temperature of meat the cooking losses and the sarcomere length were negatively correlated.  相似文献
