Proposes a new research orientation for population research, a psychology of population. This approach would include elements of social and developmental psychology (e.g., attitudes toward family planning, childhood socialization, sex roles, evaluation of different contraceptive methods, and family and group influences). Population psychology could integrate biological and social studies, provide a framework for studying the entire life cycle, and establish a methodology for evaluating micro- and macrosystems. Three studies investigated how inclusion versus exclusion strategies differentially lead to stereotypic decisions. In inclusion strategies, suitable targets are selected from a list of candidates, whereas in exclusion strategies, unsuitable candidates are eliminated. Across 2 separate target domains (Study 1: male and female politicians; Studies 2 and 3: African American and European American basketball players), exclusion strategies, as compared with inclusion strategies, elicited higher levels of both sensitivity stereotyping (i.e., greater difficulty distinguishing among members of stereotyped groups) and criterion stereotyping (i.e., setting different decision thresholds for judging members of different groups; see M. How can practicing psychologists help reduce excessive alcohol consumption among college students? Over 80% of college students consume alcohol, and a significant percentage drinks excessively with myriad problems. Brief interventions based on motivational interviewing (MI) have been identified for use with college populations. The authors randomly assigned 91 freshman students to a brief, classroom-based MI intervention or an assessment control condition. At the end of the semester, MI group participants reported fewer drinks per occasion and fewer episodes of intoxication compared to controls. A classroom-based, MI-style intervention might be an efficient, sustainable, and effective means of reducing heavy drinking among college students. The psychiatric comorbidity, health, and functioning of primary care patients with alcohol abuse and dependence (AAD) was investigated in a sample of 1,000 patients. Psychiatric symptomatology was assessed with the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD) diagnostic system. Health and functional status was assessed with the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form General Health Survey (SF-20). Results indicated that use of the PRIME-MD system brought about a 71% increase in physician recognition of AAD. AAD patients were diagnosed with substantial psychiatric comorbidity, and they reported poorer health and functioning than did patients without any psychiatric disorders. However, they reported less impairment and psychiatric comorbidity than did patients with other psychiatric disorders. Results also indicated that AAD patients' health and functioning were associated with the presence or absence of psychiatric comorbidity. Assessed 100 undergraduates' developmental theories about their affective relationships with their parents, using a retrospective method. Ss used drawings and questionnaire ratings to portray their relationships with parents at 5 points between infancy and the present. From infancy to their current age, Ss portrayed their relationships in 2 major ways: They perceived themselves as gaining in responsibility, dominance, independence, and similarity from infancy to the present, whereas they portrayed their parents as experiencing a decline on these dimensions. For variables indicating closeness and love, however, there was a striking discontinuity in these linear trends: Although Ss perceived linear trends from infancy to adolescence, they depicted their current relationships as involving a great deal more love and closeness. They also portrayed their relationships with mothers and fathers somewhat differently. More responsibility was felt toward the mothers and they were portrayed as especially friendly, but Ss felt more similar to their fathers, whom they perceived as dominant. Results suggest that late adolescents construct theories of the affective components of their relationships with their parents to serve the needs of separation while maintaining a close affective tie to the parents. J. De Houwer, S. Teige-Mocigemba, A. Spruyt, and A. Moors’s (see record 2009-05290-001) normative analysis of implicit measures provides an excellent clarification of several conceptual ambiguities surrounding the validation and use of implicit measures. The current comment discusses an important, yet unacknowledged, implication of J. De Houwer et al.’s analysis, namely, that investigations addressing the proposed implicitness criterion (i.e., does the relevant psychological attribute influence measurement outcomes in an automatic fashion?) will be susceptible to fundamental misinterpretations if they are conducted independently of the proposed what criterion (i.e., is the measurement outcome causally produced by the psychological attribute the measurement procedure was designed to assess?). As a solution, it is proposed that experimental validation studies should be combined with a correlational approach in order to determine whether a given manipulation influenced measurement scores via variations in the relevant psychological attribute or via secondary sources of systematic variance. A brief introduction describes the main differences between homo, and copolymer polyacetals and their main degradation mechanisms. A short overview describes the importance of stabilization and the necessity of using antioxidants and costabilizers during manufacturing, processing and end use of polyoxymethylene(polyacetals). Various stabilizer systems are presented and studies on the interaction of antioxidants with costabilizers added. The criteria for testing the performance of these additives are discussed and demonstrated by many examples.
