In the present study the potential of Polyactive® bilayer sheets in the prevention of scar tissue formation after spinal surgery was investigated. Eight adult beagle dogs underwent 3 laminectomies at three levels (L2, L4 and L6). According to a randomized implantation schedule a Polyactive® sheet or autogenous fat graft was placed in the defect. The third site served as a control without implant. After 4 or 12 weeks (4 dogs per period) the dogs were sacrificed and histological sections were prepared. The Polyactive® treated defects showed partial closure by newly formed bone. The Polyactive® was encapsuled by a thin fibrous tissue layer. Ventral to the defect, dense fibrous tissue was present which was separated from the dura by the Polyactive® sheet in all cases. In some cases fibrous tissue was present between the implant capsule and the dura. In the fat graft group there were no signs of closure of the defect but most sites showed fibrous tissue at the edges of the graft, which was in 4 sites continous with the dura mater. Fibrosis and degeneration of the fat grafts were seen. All control defects showed partial closure by newly formed bone, and ventral to the defect extensive fibrous tissue, which was in 50% continous with the dura mater. Other sections showed loose connective tissue in contact with the dura mater. It is concluded that Polyactive® has a potential as a mechanical barrier in the prevention of adhesions between the dorsal spinal muscles and the dura mater. 相似文献

This paper presents advanced techniques to determine all independent elastic-stiffness coefficients C/sub ij/, the associated internal friction Q/sub ij//sup -1/, and piezoelectric coefficients e/sub ij/ of monocrystal langasite (La/sub 3/Ga/sub 5/SiO/sub 14/) using a single rectangular parallelepiped specimen. Langasite's crystal structure belongs to the trigonal system with point group 32, and thus possesses six independent C/sub ij/, two e/sub ij/, and two dielectric coefficients /spl epsiv//sub ij/. All of the elastic and piezoelectric coefficients affect the mechanical resonance frequencies of the solid specimen, and measuring them very accurately permits one to determine the C/sub ij/ and e/sub ij/ with known density, dimensions, and e/sub ij/. We developed a piezoelectric tripod to support the specimen upward and measured the free-vibration resonance frequencies with minimum load from its own weight. This weak and stable acoustic coupling ensures accuracy of the frequency measurement better than 10/sup -5/, enough to determine the coefficients reliably. Our C/sub ij/ fall in the range of results measured with previous (conventional) methods. Our e/sub 11/ is smaller than the reported values by 1.2-13%, and e/sub 14/ is larger by 44-97%. For the internal friction measurement, we used a solenoid coil to vibrate the specimen without any contact. The longitudinal-wave internal friction considerably exceeds the shear-wave internal friction, which can be explained by phonon-phonon interactions. 相似文献

This paper describes the primary ground improvement of hydraulic fill used in Japan prior to conventional deep ground treatment such as vertical drains. Use is made of a high density polyethylene mesh to form a sand mat over soft silty clay hydraulic fill dredged from the sea bed. Establishment of the sand mat is necessary to allow trafficking of the soft fill by construction plant. In this method the mesh is laid on the hydraulic fill either directly below or above the water level, following which sand is placed to the required thickness using sand pumps. Using this method of construction any pumping action in the hydraulic fill does not arise during trafficking by construction plant. Previous studies have found that in American culture high-arousal positive states (HAP) such as excitement are valued more and low-arousal positive states (LAP) such as calm are valued less than they are in Chinese culture. What specific factors account for these differences? The authors predicted that when people and cultures aimed to influence others (i.e., assert personal needs and change others' behaviors to meet those needs), they would value HAP more and LAP less than when they aimed to adjust to others (i.e., suppress personal needs and change their own behaviors to meet others' needs). They test these predictions in 1 survey and 3 experimental studies. The findings suggest that within and across American and Chinese contexts, differences in ideal affect are due to specific interpersonal goals. Compared the frequency resolving power of 3 male budgerigar birds and 3 humans on several nonsimultaneous masking procedures in which one pure tone was used to mask another. Similar patterns of frequency selectivity were found for all 3 masking procedures (forward, backward, and combined forward/backward) for both species. Budgerigars showed considerably greater frequency resolving power on all 3 procedures than humans. Budgerigars also showed differences in frequency resolving power across masking conditions, but human Ss did not. Results indicate that the budgerigar auditory system may be even more highly tuned than was previously thought and suggest fundamental differences between the mechanisms of frequency selectivity of birds and humans. Fermented salami was prepared containing 0, 9, 18 and 27% defatted sesame flour (DSF). Chemical and sensory analyses were performed on the products. For timber the tensile stress perpendicular to the grain is a critical type of stress. The influence of long-term loading, temperature and climate changes upon the tensile strength perpendicular to the grain of timber is shown. The results prove that the greatest loss of strength happened after long-term outdoors loading. While storing under alternating climate conditions, great crepp strains appeared, and it is to be presumed that the damages of wooden components which fail across the grain are less a problem of “tensile stress perpendicular to the grain” than a problem of “strain under tension perpendicular to the grain”. 相似文献

The effect of chelating agents on extracellular proteinase production by Pseudomonas fluorescens 32A was examined. Increasing concentrations of orthophosphate slightly stimulated growth while inhibiting proteinase synthesis. Fifty per cent inhibition was found at 35 and 28 mM-orthophosphate at 5 and 20 degrees C respectively. Extracellular protein concentration was reduced by 30% when cells were grown with 100 mM-orthophosphate. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the cell-free supernatants suggested that reduced enzyme synthesis had taken place as evidenced by the decrease in staining intensity of the protein band corresponding to the proteinase. Other phosphate compounds could replace orthophosphate as an inhibitor. Extent of inhibition was related to chain length; polyphosphates with 4-6 or 13-18 phosphorus atoms were the most effective inhibitors. EDTA (0.5 mM) completely inhibited proteinase synthesis. This inhibition could be partly reversed by Ca2+ and, to a lesser extent, Mn2+. Proteinase production at 5 degrees C in skim milk was completely inhibited by phosphate glass (P13-P18). Control experiments showed that loss of activity with chelators was not due to inhibition of preformed enzyme. The results suggest a possible role for polyphosphates in controlling proteinase production in stored milk. 相似文献
