McCall, one of the 1994 recipients of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions--Distinguished Professional Contributions to Public Service. From McCall's citation: "Building on a prolific research career in child development, Robert B. McCall communicated the scientific findings of his colleagues to the public through the mass media, winning four national awards and demonstrating to a sometimes skeptical profession that such articles and TV programs could be both accurate and interesting. Subsequently, he became the inaugural director for the University of Pittsburgh Office of Child Development, a unique interdisciplinary, university-community facilitative unit that has broadened the definition of university public service to embrace partnerships among faculty and community service professionals, funders, and policymakers that have created innovative interdisciplinary training and research programs, human service demonstration and evaluation projects, and policy studies." Recognizes Martha J. Farah for rigorous empirical and theoretical analysis of visual cognition, in which understanding of normal function and analysis of neurological deficits illuminate and strengthen one another. Applying diverse experimental techniques within an integrated approach to the study of mind and brain, she has sharpened and helped to answer fundamental questions about how humans generate and manipulate visual images, recognize objects, and attend to positions in space. Studied the social reputations of elementary school children. Ss were 76 2nd-grade (mean age 7.5 yrs), 71 3rd-grade (mean age 8.5 yrs), and 83 4th-grade students (mean age 9.7 yrs). Using the peer nomination technique, Ss were assessed collectively on 8 dimensions requiring both social and academic judgments. A cluster analysis was performed to identify groups with different sociometric profiles. Correlations between peer evaluations and teacher evaluations of Ss' social reputations were determined. Distinguished Scientific Awards for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology.

The Early Career Awards recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not have held a PhD for more than nine years. The areas considered in 1991 were animal learning and behavior, developmental, and personality. The winners for 1991 were Kent C. Berridge, Susan A. Gelman, and Randy J. Larsen. Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy of GaN Thick Films by the Consecutive Deposition Process Using GaCl3

GaN buffer and main layers were grown by the conventional hydride vapor phase epitaxy technique using GaCl₃ consecutively. The deposited buffer layers were investigated by atomic force microscopy and X-ray analysis. To examine the behavior of the buffer layers at main layer growth temperature, heat treatment was conducted at 900°C. Based on the results of the buffer layer study, GaN thick films were grown at 1050°C. Optimum deposition conditions of buffer layer from the buffer and main layer studies generally coincided. On the φ scanning pattern, the GaN films grown on (0001) Al₂O₃ were single-crystalline. Band-edge emission dominated photoluminescence was observed at room temperature.
