In this paper, I will discuss the application of Maturana and Varela's theories of autopoiesis, cognition and language to the notions of worldview, worldview change and curriculum design. The context for this discussion is the education of systems concepts, thinking and practice. It has been argued that systemic thinking requires the adoption of particular assumptions into the worldview of the student, independent of the systems concepts under study. This raises the question of how best to structure a curriculum to meet this end. It will be argued that autopoietic theory, when applied to systems education has significant implications for curriculum design.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of conjugated linoleic acid supplementation on the synthesis of milk fat in pasture-fed Friesian cows. In four cows, a commercial mixture containing 62.3% (wt/vol) conjugated linoleic acid was infused intraabomasally to avoid rumen fermentation and biohydrogenation. The design was a 4 x 4 Latin square in which each cow received infusions of 0, 20, 40, and 80 g/d of conjugated linoleic acid mixture for 4 d. Cows were fed freshly cut ryegrass/white clover pasture ad libitum. Milk fat concentration was decreased by 36, 43, and 62% and milk fat yield was decreased by 32, 36, and 60% by the 20, 40, and 80 g of conjugated linoleic acid/d treatments. Dry matter intake, milk protein concentration, and protein yield were unaffected by treatments; however, milk yield was increased by 11% during the 40-g conjugated linoleic acid/d treatment. The effects of conjugated linoleic acid infusion were most pronounced in reducing de novo fatty acid synthesis and desaturation. Results show that the inhibitory effect of this conjugated linoleic acid mixture on milk fat synthesis occurs in pasture-fed cows, and demonstrate the potential to dramatically alter gross milk composition. This technology could offer a management tool to manipulate milk composition and energy demands of pasture-fed cows.  相似文献

A femtosecond laser system was used in combination with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) for in-depth profiling of semiconductor and metal samples. The semiconductor sample was a Co-implanted (10(17) ions/cm3) silicon wafer that had been carefully characterized by other established techniques. The total depth of the shallow implanted layer was 150 nm. As a second sample, a thin film metal standard had been used (NIST 2135c). This standard consisted of a silicon wafer with nine alternating Cr and Ni layers, each having a thickness of 56 and 57 nm, respectively. An orthogonal TOF-MS setup was implemented. This configuration was optimized until a sufficient mass resolution of 300 (m/delta m) and sensitivity was achieved. The experiments revealed that femtosecond-laser ablation TOF-MS is capable of resolving the depth profiles of these demanding samples. The poor precision of the measurements is discussed, and it is shown that this is due to pulse-to-pulse stability of the current laser system. Femtosecond-laser ablation TOF-MS is shown to be a promising technique for rapid in-depth profiling with a good lateral resolution of various multilayer thin film samples.  相似文献

In biomass processing fluidized beds are used to process granular materials where particles typically possess elongated shapes. However, for simplicity, in computer simulations particles are often considered spherical, even though elongated particles experience more complex particle– particle interactions as well as different hydrodynamic forces. The exact effect of these more complex interactions in dense fluidized suspensions is still not well understood. In this study we use the magnetic particle tracking technique to compare the fluidization behavior of spherical particles to that of elongated particles. We found a considerable difference between fluidization behavior of spherical versus elongated particles in the time-averaged particle velocity field as well as in the time-averaged particle rotational velocity profile. Moreover, we studied the effect of fluid velocity and the particle's aspect ratio on the particle's preferred orientation in different parts of the bed, which provides new insight in the fluidization behavior of elongated particles.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of retrospectively pruning decision trees induced from data, according to a top-down approach. This problem has received considerable attention in the areas of pattern recognition and machine learning, and many distinct methods have been proposed in literature. We make a comparative study of six well-known pruning methods with the aim of understanding their theoretical foundations, their computational complexity, and the strengths and weaknesses of their formulation. Comments on the characteristics of each method are empirically supported. In particular, a wide experimentation performed on several data sets leads us to opposite conclusions on the predictive accuracy of simplified trees from some drawn in the literature. We attribute this divergence to differences in experimental designs. Finally, we prove and make use of a property of the reduced error pruning method to obtain an objective evaluation of the tendency to overprune/underprune observed in each method  相似文献

Emerging evidence supports that hypertension can be programmed or reprogrammed by maternal nutrition. Maternal exposures during pregnancy, such as maternal nutrition or antibiotic use, could alter the offspring’s gut microbiota. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the major gut microbiota-derived metabolites. Acetate, the most dominant SCFA, has shown its antihypertensive effect. Limited information exists regarding whether maternal acetate supplementation can prevent maternal minocycline-induced hypertension in adult offspring. We exposed pregnant Sprague Dawley rats to normal diet (ND), minocycline (MI, 50 mg/kg/day), magnesium acetate (AC, 200 mmol/L in drinking water), and MI + AC from gestation to lactation period. At 12 weeks of age, four groups (n = 8/group) of male progeny were sacrificed. Maternal acetate supplementation protected adult offspring against minocycline-induced hypertension. Minocycline administration reduced plasma acetic acid level, which maternal acetate supplementation prevented. Additionally, acetate supplementation increased the protein level of SCFA receptor G protein-coupled receptor 41 in the offspring kidneys. Further, minocycline administration and acetate supplementation significantly altered gut microbiota composition. Maternal acetate supplementation protected minocycline-induced hypertension accompanying by the increases in genera Roseburia, Bifidobacterium, and Coprococcus. In sum, our results cast new light on targeting gut microbial metabolites as early interventions to prevent the development of hypertension, which could help alleviate the global burden of hypertension.  相似文献

Wheat gluten films of various thicknesses formed at 30–70°C were treated with cold sulfuric acid to produce sulfated gluten films. Chemical, thermal, thermal stability, and water uptake properties were characterized for neat and sulfated films. The sulfated gluten films were able to absorb up to 30 times their weight in deionized water. However, this value dropped to 3.5 when the film was soaked in a 0.9% (w/w) NaCl solution. The films were also soaked 4 times in deionized water, and each soaking resulted in a reduced water uptake capacity. The temperature of film formation had no effect on the final water uptake properties. Also, thinner films had higher concentrations of sulfate groups than thicker films; this resulted in higher water uptake values. In addition, sulfated gluten films had comparable glass‐transition temperatures but lower thermal stabilities than the neat gluten films. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wheat gluten was reacted with citric acid to produce natural superabsorbent materials able to absorb up to 78 times its weight in water. The properties of the modified gluten samples were characterized using Fourier Transform Infra‐red (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and water uptake. The reaction between gluten and citric acid was examined for gluten : citric acid ratios of 0.38 : 1 to 0.75 : 1 at temperatures from 100 to 130°C. More citric acid reacted for samples containing higher citric acid concentrations and at higher temperatures. FTIR analyses indicated the presence of carboxylate groups on the modified gluten samples, which resulted in modified samples having higher water uptake values than neat gluten. The sample with a gluten:citric acid ratio of 0.5 : 1 and reaction temperature of 120°C had the largest water uptake value. Removal of discoloration caused by aged oily soils is difficult because oily soils undergo autoxidation, which results in polymerization and formation of chromophores. Use of antioxidants and a reducing agent was investigated for their impact on appearance retention and soil removal. The effect of a reducing agent, sodium dithionite, on the removal of aged squalene from cotton fabrics was studied as a pretreatment to laundering, which enhanced the removal of squalene as well as whiteness restoration. Increases in treatment concentration and time increased color removal. However, no significant increase was found in oil removal, suggesting that the role of the reducing agent is mainly a reductive bleaching action. Thus, the color will probably reverse by oxidation over time making this approach a not-so-promising laundry treatment. As a method of preventing discoloration of oily soiled textile materials, antioxidants Irganox® 1010, t-butylhydroxyanisole and α-tocopherol were examined; they were found to be effective antioxidants for this purpose by preventing the discoloration of squalene upon aging. With Irganox® 1010, this prevention occurred without decreasing the detergency of the oil. Most importantly, these antioxidants either did not stain the substrate or showed very low levels of staining upon usage. The biggest barrier to applying antioxidants on textiles is their hydrophobic nature. A search for water-soluble antioxidants with nonstaining and good oxidation inhibiting properties is necessary.  相似文献

Reproduction and milk production responses were compared between dairy cows offered a high (HPA; n = 453 in 4 replicates) or low (LPA; n = 317 in 3 replicates) pasture allowance for the first 14 d after the planned start of mating (d 0 of experiment) in 2 seasonal, pasture-based dairy herds. Estimated pasture dry matter intake (DMI) between d −1 and 13 were 14.3 ± 2.8 and 8.0 ± 1.7 kg of DM/cow per day for HPA and LPA cows, respectively. The LPA cows produced 22% less energy-corrected milk during the 14-d feeding treatment period, and milk yield remained less in LPA cows at d 53 despite all cows receiving pasture allowances to support DMI of 16 kg of dry matter/cow per day from d 14 onwards. The 3-wk submission rate (percentage of cows inseminated at least once from d 0 to 20) and the 3- and 6-wk pregnancy rates of LPA cows (88, 45, and 71%, respectively) were lower than those of HPA cows (94, 53, and 78%, respectively), but conception rates to first (50%) or second (47%) service and final pregnancy rates (93%) did not differ between treatments. These results quantify the immediate and subsequent responses in reproductive performance and milk production to a severe restriction in DMI at the onset of a seasonal breeding period in pasture-grazed dairy cows.  相似文献
