RADIOLYTIC DEGRADATION OF A CROWN ETHER FOR EXTRACT ABILITY OF STRONTIUM

ABSTRACT

Dicyclohexano- 18-crown-6 (DC18C6), dissolved in chloroform, 1-octanol, toluene or cyclohexane, was irradiated by ⁶⁰Co γ-rays. Radiolytic destruction of DC18C6, measured by gas chromatography, decreased in the order: chloroform > cyclohexane > 1-octanol > toluene. Distribution coefficients in the solvent extraction of strontium from nitric acid solution were measured. These distribution coefficients were minimally affected by γ-irradiation in toluene solution, but decreased with the absorbed dose in chloroform solution. It was suggested that the distribution coefficient for the liquid-liquid extraction system was influenced by radiolytic products. The effect of radiolytic products on the distribution coefficients was evaluated by considering DC18C6 remaining in the organic phase after irradiation. The distribution coefficient measured for the organic phase with radiolytic products was larger than that without radiolytic products. The radiolytic products were thus shown to contribute to the increase in the distribution coefficient.     

Relative pitch perception in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata).

To investigate whether monkeys perceive relative pitch, the author trained 3 Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) to detect changes from rising to falling contours of 3-tone sequences. Tone sequences were presented serially with transposition, so monkeys were urged to attend to cues other than the absolute frequency of a component tone. Results from probe tests with novel sequences showed that monkeys discriminated by the relative pitch when the frequency ranges of sequences were within the training range, showing a similar tendency as birds in previous studies (e.g., S. Dynamic load balancing among multiple fabrication lines through estimation of minimum inter-operation time

We propose a load balancing method which balances all processing operations of products among multiple semiconductor wafer fabrication lines (fabs) by using predictive scheduling results. Through a simulation experiment we confirmed that the proposed method enabled improved load balancing (compared to conventional methods) among multiple fabrication lines each of which can independently fabricate wafers and has different wafer processing capacity. The load balancing feature effectively reduces the waiting time at each process step and the lead time of all products in multiple fabs. Another promising application of the proposed method is performance evaluation of automated material handling systems (AMHS) in terms of inter-operation time, and we have used the method to evaluate the transportation efficiency of actual fabs.     

Evaluation of transistor property variations within chips on 300-mm wafers using a new MOSFET array test structure

A new test structure has been designed to evaluate fluctuations of transistor properties, both within a chip and across a 300-mm wafer. The evaluation system was established with a conventional parametric tester and dc power supplies suitable for application on production lines. It was observed that threshold voltage (V/sub th/) variations increased with the reduction of the channel area. A difference was also observed in the standard deviation (/spl sigma//sub vt/) between NMOS and PMOS. From statistical evaluations, controlling CDs and improving rolloff characteristics were found to be important to reduce V/sub th/ variations.     

Synthesis of π-conjugated copolymer with dibenzo[d,d′]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]difuran unit in the main chain

New π-conjugated polymers with dibenzo[d,d′]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]difuran (DBBDF) unit in the main chains were synthesized. Copolymerization of 6,12-diiodo-DBBDF with p-diethynylbenzene or 2,7-diethynylfluorene derivative under Sonogashira–Hagiwara coupling-reaction condition gave the corresponding copolymer. The resulting copolymers were soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform. In UV–vis absorption spectra, both copolymers showed red-shifted spectra compared to their monomer units. In the chloroform solutions, the copolymer with DBBDF and p-diethynylbenzene units showed yellowish-green emission, while the copolymer with DBBDF and 2,7-diethynylfluorene units did greenish-blue emission.     

Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in 30 patients with hematologic disorders

Thirty patients (median age of 32 years; range, 6-61) with hematologic disorders received unmanipulated peripheral blood stem cell transplants from HLA-matched or one-antigen-mismatched related donors following myeloablative therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (7), acute myelogenous leukemia (6), chronic myelogenous leukemia (8), myelodysplastic syndrome (3), or other disorders (6). Granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilized peripheral blood stem cells were collected from donors in 1 to 3 aphereses. The apheresis products contained mean counts of 11.3 x 10(8) (range, 3.8-17.2) nucleated cells/kg and 6.7 x 10(6) (range, 1.3-16.7) CD34+ cells/kg. Graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) prophylaxis consisted of cyclosporin A plus methotrexate, or FK506 plus methotrexate. All patients received G-CSF following their transplant. Although 1 patient died of pneumonia 6 days after transplantation, the others demonstrated rapid engraftment. Median days to recovery to 500/microliter neutrophils and 20,000/microliter platelets were 13 (range, 8-21) and 14 (range, 1-23) days, respectively. The incidence of acute GVHD grade II-IV was 33%; chronic GVHD developed in 57% of the assessable patients. There were no episodes of graft failure or rejection. Nineteen patients (63%) were alive and in complete remission from 147 to 839 days following their transplant (median follow-up of 560 days). Further follow-up study will be required to assess the incidence of chronic GVHD and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects.     

Role of the TRAF binding site and NF-kappaB activation in Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1-induced cell gene expression

In this study, we investigated the induction of cellular gene expression by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1). Previously, LMP1 was shown to induce the expression of ICAM-1, LFA-3, CD40, and EBI3 in EBV-negative Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cells and of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) in epithelial cells. We now show that LMP1 expression also increased Fas and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 1 (TRAF1) in BL cells. LMP1 mediates NF-kappaB activation via two independent domains located in its C-terminal cytoplasmic tail, a TRAF-interacting site that associates with TRAF1, -2, -3, and -5 through a PXQXT/S core motif and a TRADD-interacting site. In EBV-transformed B cells or transiently transfected BL cells, significant amounts of TRAF1, -2, -3, and -5 are associated with LMP1. In epithelial cells, very little TRAF1 is expressed, and only TRAF2, -3, and -5, are significantly complexed with LMP1. The importance of TRAF binding to the PXQXT/S motif in LMP1-mediated gene induction was studied by using an LMP1 mutant that contains alanine point mutations in this motif and fails to associate with TRAFs. This mutant, LMP1(P204A/Q206A), induced 60% of wild-type LMP1 NF-kappaB activation and had approximately 60% of wild-type LMP1 effect on Fas, ICAM-1, CD40, and LFA-3 induction. In contrast, LMP1(P204A/Q206A) was substantially more impaired in TRAF1, EBI3, and EGF-R induction. Thus, TRAF binding to the PXQXT/S motif has a nonessential role in up-regulating Fas, ICAM-1, CD40, and LFA-3 expression and a critical role in up-regulating TRAF1, EBI3, and EGF-R expression. Further, D1 LMP1, an LMP1 mutant that does not aggregate failed to induce TRAF1, EBI3, Fas, ICAM-1, CD40, and LFA-3 expression confirming the essential role for aggregation in LMP1 signaling. Overexpression of a dominant form of IkappaBalpha blocked LMP1-mediated TRAF1, EBI3, Fas, ICAM-1, CD40, and LFA-3 up-regulation, indicating that NF-kappaB is an important component of LMP1-mediated gene induction from both the TRAF- and TRADD-interacting sites.     

Tubulin Photoaffinity Labeling with Biotin‐Tagged Derivatives of Potent Diketopiperazine Antimicrotubule Agents

NPI‐2358 ( 1 ) is a potent antimicrotubule agent that was developed from a natural diketopiperazine, phenylahistin, which is currently in Phase I clinical trials as an anticancer drug. To understand the precise recognition mechanism of tubulin by this agent, we focused on its potent derivative, KPU‐244 ( 2 ), which has been modified with a photoreactive benzophenone structure, and biotin‐tagged KPU‐244 derivatives ( 3 and 4 ), which were designed and synthesized for tubulin photoaffinity labeling. Introduction of the biotin structure at the p′‐position of the benzophenone ring in 2 exhibited reduced, but significant biological activities with tubulin binding, tubulin depolymerization and cytotoxicity in comparison to the parent KPU‐244. Therefore, tubulin photoaffinity labeling studies of biotin‐derivatives 3 and 4 were performed by using Western blotting analysis after photoirradiation with 365 nm UV light. The results indicated that tubulin was covalently labeled by these biotin‐tagged photoprobes. The labeling of compound 4 was competitively inhibited by the addition of diketopiperazine 1 or colchicine, and weakly inhibited by the addition of vinblastine. The results suggest that photoaffinity probe 4 specifically recognizes tubulin at the same binding site as anticancer drug candidate 1 , and this leads to the disruption of microtubules. Probe 4 serves well as a useful chemical probe for potent antimicrotubule diketopiperazines, much like phenylahistin, and it also competes for the colchicine‐binding site.
