Comments on an article by J. T. Jost (see record 2006-12925-001), which presented interesting data relating some personality dimensions to voting patterns in the last three U.S. presidential elections. R. K. Unger is surprised that in his extensive review of the role of ideology, Jost ignored the role of religious ideology in political attitudes and voting behavior. There is ample evidence that level of religious observance (sometimes labeled religiosity, hierarchical religious beliefs, or religious fundamentalism) played a role in 2004 and earlier presidential elections. The relationship between religious ideology and political attitudes is correlational, and one needs to look further for an explanation of their impact. A number of studies indicate relationships between religious fundamentalism and what Jost has termed "system-justifying ideologies." Unger suggests that religiosity has been largely ignored by psychologists interested in social and political behaviors. It is quite possible that religiosity is related to the various personality dimensions discussed by Jost. But we cannot learn more about these potential connections if we continue to ignore the importance of religious ideology as a psychological variable. Nitroaromatics are common pollutants of soil and groundwater at military installations because of their manufacture, storage, and use at these sites. Long-term monitoring of these pollutants comprise a significant percentage of restoration costs. Further, remediation activities often have to be delayed, while the samples are processed via traditional chemical assessment protocols. Here we describe a rapid (<5 min), cost-effective, accurate method using a KinExA Inline Biosensor for monitoring of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in field water samples. The biosensor, which is based on KinExA technology, accurately estimated the concentration of TNT in double-blind comparisons with similar accuracy to traditional high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). In the assessment of field samples, the biosensor accurately predicted the concentration of TNT over the range of 1-30,000 microg/L when compared to either HPLC or quantitative gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Various pre-assessment techniques were explored to examine whether field samples could be assessed untreated, without the removal of particulates or the use of solvents. In most cases, the KinExA Inline Biosensor gave a uniform assessment of TNT concentration independent of pretreatment method. This indicates that this sensor possesses significant promise for rapid, on-site assessment of TNT pollution in environmental water samples.  相似文献

Time-resolved Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopic imaging was applied to the diffusion process of butanol(OD) into polyamide 11 (PA11) with a novel sheet-structured variable-temperature-controlled sample holder in order to demonstrate the significant differences of diffusion rate below and above the glass transition temperature of PA11. The diffusant butanol(OD) was chosen for two reasons: (1) it allows the diffusion front to be monitored by the intensity decrease of a NH-specific absorption band of PA11 due to the NH/ND isotope exchange and (2) under the measurement conditions the diffusion of butanol(OD) into PA11 takes place in an experimentally manageable time frame. Apart from the in situ visualization of the diffusion front in the time-resolved FT-NIR images, the type of diffusion and the diffusion coefficient of butanol(OD) into PA11 have been determined.  相似文献

The possibility of constructing the synchronization system of the Viterbi demodulator of continuous-phase modulation (CPM) signals is analyzed. The concept of multiphase trellis is introduced to provide the phase self-synchronization of a demodulator. The results calculated via computer simulation of the phase synchronization scheme that ensures efficient reception of CPM signals with constant and cyclically varying modulation indices are presented. The clock synchronization scheme whose main component is a delay discriminator is proposed and investigated. Its operability is demonstrated with the use of a minimum frequency-shift keying signal.  相似文献

We have developed a collagen–mRNA platform for controllable protein production that is intended to be less prone to the problems associated with commonly used mRNA therapy as well as with collagen skin‐healing procedures. A collagen mimic was constructed according to a recombinant method and was used as scaffold for translating mRNA chains into proteins. Cysteines were genetically inserted into the collagen chain at positions allowing efficient ribosome translation activity while minimizing mRNA misfolding and degradation. Enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) mRNA bound to collagen was successfully translated by cell‐free Escherichia coli ribosomes. This system enabled an accurate control of specific protein synthesis by monitoring expression time and level. Luciferase–mRNA was also translated on collagen scaffold by eukaryotic cell extracts. Thus we have demonstrated the feasibility of controllable protein synthesis on collagen scaffolds by ribosomal machinery.  相似文献

This study examined multiple influences on the use of tobacco by adolescents in China. Using the theory of triadic influences as a guide, we selected interpersonal, attitudinal/cultural, and intrapersonal constructs from baseline data to predict adolescent smoking 1 year later. We used prospective data from middle and high school students (N = 11,583) and their parents from the China Seven Cities Study, a longitudinal study that is evaluating the effects of changing economic and social factors on health behaviors including tobacco use. A multilevel regression analysis provided some support that each of the influences in the theory of triadic influences affects adolescent smoking in China. After adjusting for important confounders including age, gender, socioeconomic status, and smoking behaviors (lifetime and past 30-day) at baseline, we found significant risk factors within each of the three categories, including interpersonal influences (parental monitoring, good friend smoking, and peer smoking), attitudinal/cultural influences (school academic ranking, initial liking of smoking, and the meaning of smoking), and intrapersonal influences (susceptibility to smoking, and low self-confidence to quit smoking). Results suggest that the etiology of smoking among adolescents in China might be similar to that observed in western countries and that some of the techniques used successfully in prevention programs in those countries might be useful guides when developing prevention programs in China.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which Chinese American and white minors differ in age of smoking initiation, and to determine the effect of acculturation on smoking initiation. DESIGN: Cross-sectional telephone surveys. SETTING: Stratified random samples of the state of California, United States. SUBJECTS: 347 Chinese American and 10 129 white adolescents aged 12 through 17 years, from the California Tobacco Survey (1990-93) and the California Youth Tobacco Survey (1994-96). OUTCOME MEASURES: Hazards (risk) of smoking initiation by age, smoking initiation rate, cumulative smoking rate, mean age of smoking initiation, and acculturation status. STATISTICAL METHODS: Life table methods, proportional hazards models, and chi(2) tests. RESULTS: The risk of smoking initiation by age among Chinese American minors was about a third of that among white minors. The risk for Chinese Americans continued to rise even in later adolescence, in contrast to that for whites, which slowed after 15 years of age. Acculturation was associated significantly with smoking onset among Chinese Americans. Acculturation, smoking among social network members, attitudes toward smoking, and perceived benefits of smoking were associated with the difference in hazards of smoking onset between Chinese American minors and their white counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Chinese American adolescents had a lower level and a different pattern of smoking onset than white adolescents. Levels of acculturation and other known risk factors were associated with the hazards of smoking initiation among Chinese American minors and with the difference in smoking initiation between the Chinese and white adolescents. Tobacco prevention policies, strategies, and programmes for ethnically diverse populations should take acculturation factors into account.  相似文献

The paper describes the synthesis of starch phosphate carbamides by reacting starch with phosphoric acid and urea. A solid state technique in vacuum at elevated temperatures is used. The degree of substitution of phosphate (DSP) and carbamide groups (DSC) can be adjusted by the molar ratio of starch: phosphoric acid: urea, the reaction temperature, and time. The starch derivatives prepared show remarkable swelling if the DSP ranges between 0.2 and 0.3. With increasing content of urea in the reaction mixture the water‐holding ability is still significantly improved, which is explained by chemically and especially physically introduced urea into the starch polymer. Furthermore, the ratio of amylose: amylopectin of the starch samples influences both the DS values and the physicochemical properties, e.g., swelling power and multivalent metal ion adsorption of the products. The structure of the new polymers was determined by means of FTIR, 13C‐ and 31P NMR spectroscopy as well as by gel permeation chromatography (GPC).  相似文献
