Objective

Recent years have seen an increased interest in combining MRI thermometry with devices capable of destroying malignancies by heat ablation. Expected from the MR protocols are accurate and fast thermal characterizations, providing real time feedback on restricted tissue volumes and/or rapidly moving organs like liver. This article explores the potential advantages of relying on spatiotemporally encoded (SPEN) sequences for retrieving real-time thermometric images based on the water’s proton resonance frequency (PRF) shifts.

Materials and methods

Hybrid spatiotemporal/k-space encoding single-scan MRI experiments were implemented on animal and human scanners, and their abilities to deliver single- and multi-slice real-time thermometric measurements based on PRF-derived phase maps in phantoms and in vivo, were compared against echo planar imaging (EPI) and gradient-echo counterparts.

Results

Under comparable acquisition conditions, SPEN exhibited advantages vis-à-vis EPI in terms of dealing with inhomogeneous magnetic field distortions, with shifts arising due to changes in the central frequency offsets, with PRF distributions, and for zooming into restricted fields-of-view without special pulse sequence provisions.

Conclusion

This work confirms the ability of SPEN sequences, particularly when implemented under fully-refocused conditions, to exploit their built-in robustness to shift- and field-derived inhomogeneities for monitoring thermal changes in real-time under in vitro and in vivo conditions.  相似文献

A pure 7Be beam with an energy E = 1-8 MeV is available for nuclear and applied physics at the 3 MV Pelletron tandem accelerator CIRCE in Caserta. The beam is produced using an offline technique. Typical analyzed beam intensities are about 2 ppA, using cathodes with an activity of the order of 200 MBq. The 7Be implantation has been used for both fundamental nuclear physics and applied physics. In particular, different metals have been implanted with 7Be in order to study the influence of the chemical composition and of the number of quasi-free electrons of the host material on the 7Be half-life. In the field of applied physics, the 7Be implantation turns out to be very interesting for wear measurement. In fact, in this case 7Be is used as a depth-sensitive tracer. The continuous detection of the sample activity during the wear allows a high sensitivity measurement of wearing speed. The 7Be beam production at CIRCE, the implantation procedure and the results obtained from the 7Be half-life measurements and the wear characterization of implanted steel samples are described.  相似文献

•  Previous studies examining the influence of internationalization on the volatility of a firm’s performance have found inconsistent empirical evidence. Earlier studies support a reduction in volatility resulting from a higher level of international operations. However, more recent studies have found evidence supporting a positive correlation between internationalization and various measures of firm risk.
•  This study suggests that these results are inconclusive because of their narrow conceptualization of international strategy as a one-dimensional construct. This paper suggests that two dimensions implicit in the configuration patterns of MNC networks and their respective interaction may have distinct effects on performance volatility.
•  Regression results using a sample of 320 U.S. firms from 133 SIC segments provide evidence supporting this view. Consistent with the earlier literature, the empirical results support the reduction in volatility derived from a greater dispersion of international operations. In addition, the global integration dimension of an MNC network configuration increases exposure to potential performance swings. Lastly, the interaction term between global integration and geographic dispersion tends to be negatively associated with volatility. These results help reconcile the prior literature and provide evidence for the multidimensional nature of the internationalization construct.

The low conductivity landfill barrier layers protect the groundwater and soil by limiting the water flow through the bottom layers of the landfill material. Many materials used in hydraulic barrier layers also have sorption properties which could be used to reduce environmental risks. The adsorption of lead, chromium, copper, and arsenic to peat was studied with a batch-type test and a column test for compacted peat, both without pH adjustment in acidic conditions. Peat adsorbed all the metals well, 40 000 mg/kg of lead, 13 000 mg/kg of chromium, and 8400 mg/kg of copper in the column test. Arsenic was only tested in a batch-type test, and in that peat adsorbed 60 mg/kg of arsenic. The column test showed heavy metals to be adsorbed on the surface layers of the compacted peat sample, on the first centimeter of the sample. The adsorption was much greater in the column test than in the batch-type test, partly due to the different pH conditions and the buffer capacity of the peat in the column test. The liquid/solid ratio of the column experiment represented a time period of approximately 40 years in a landfill, under Finnish climate conditions. The hydraulic conductivity of the peat decreased as it was compressed, but it already met the hydraulic conductivity limits set by European Union legislation for the hydraulic barrier layer (1 × 10−9 m/s at a pressure of 150 kPa for a 5-m layer), with a pressure of 50 kPa. The results show that peat would be an excellent material to construct compacted, low hydraulic conductivity layers with adsorption properties in, e.g. industrial waste landfills.  相似文献

The adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation (ABO) has been the standard ansatz to describe the interaction between electrons and nuclei since the early days of quantum mechanics. ABO assumes that the lighter electrons adjust adiabatically to the motion of the heavier nuclei, remaining at any time in their instantaneous ground state. ABO is well justified when the energy gap between ground and excited electronic states is larger than the energy scale of the nuclear motion. In metals, the gap is zero and phenomena beyond ABO (such as phonon-mediated superconductivity or phonon-induced renormalization of the electronic properties) occur. The use of ABO to describe lattice motion in metals is, therefore, questionable. In spite of this, ABO has proved effective for the accurate determination of chemical reactions, molecular dynamics and phonon frequencies in a wide range of metallic systems. Here, we show that ABO fails in graphene. Graphene, recently discovered in the free state, is a zero-bandgap semiconductor that becomes a metal if the Fermi energy is tuned applying a gate voltage, Vg. This induces a stiffening of the Raman G peak that cannot be described within ABO.  相似文献

Recent evidence suggests that I2-imidazoline ligands have neuroprotective properties in animal models of neurodegeneration, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We recently demonstrated that the I2-ligand BU224 reversed memory impairments in AD transgenic mice and this effect was not because of reductions in amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition. In this study, our aim was to determine the therapeutic potential of the powerful analgesic I2-imidazoline ligand CR4056 in the 5xFAD model of AD, since this ligand has been proven to be safely tolerated in humans. Sub-chronic oral administration of CR4056 (30 mg/kg for 10 days) led to an improvement in recognition memory in 6-month-old 5xFAD mice, but not in wild-type littermates, without affecting Aβ levels or deposition. Our results also revealed a change in the profile of microglia by CR4056, resulting in a suppression of pro-inflammatory activated microglia, but increased the density of astrocytes and the expression of ApoE, which is mainly produced by these glial cells. In addition, CR4056 restored fibrinogen extravasation, affecting the distribution of markers of astrocytic end feet in blood vessels. Therefore, these results suggest that CR4056 protects against Aβ-mediated neuroinflammation and vascular damage, and offers therapeutic potential at any stage of AD.  相似文献

Long COVID (LC) describes the clinical phenotype of symptoms after infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Diagnostic and therapeutic options are limited, as the pathomechanism of LC is elusive. As the number of acute SARS-CoV-2 infections was and is large, LC will be a challenge for the healthcare system. Previous studies revealed an impaired blood flow, the formation of microclots, and autoimmune mechanisms as potential factors in this complex interplay. Since functionally active autoantibodies against G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR-AAbs) were observed in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection, this study aimed to correlate the appearance of GPCR-AAbs with capillary microcirculation. The seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs was measured by an established cardiomyocyte bioassay in 42 patients with LC and 6 controls. Retinal microcirculation was measured by OCT–angiography and quantified as macula and peripapillary vessel density (VD) by the Erlangen-Angio Tool. A statistical analysis yielded impaired VD in patients with LC compared to the controls, which was accentuated in female persons. A significant decrease in macula and peripapillary VD for AAbs targeting adrenergic β2-receptor, MAS-receptor angiotensin-II-type-1 receptor, and adrenergic α1-receptor were observed. The present study might suggest that a seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs can be linked to an impaired retinal capillary microcirculation, potentially mirroring the systemic microcirculation with consecutive clinical symptoms.  相似文献

A particular flat plate pulsating heat pipe (FPPHP), filled with FC72, is tested during the 62th and 64th ESA parabolic flight campaigns under vertical orientation. The FPPHP is made of a thin copper plate, in which a curved channel disposed with 11 U-turns is milled and closed on the top face by a transparent borosilicate plate. The particular characteristics is that the equivalent hydraulic diameter of the square channel (2.5 × 2.5 mm²) is above the working fluid capillary diameter on ground, inducing a stratification of the liquid/vapor phases under ground and hyper-gravity conditions, whatever the orientation. The energy transfer mode in such conditions is represented either by pure pool boiling inside the channels almost completely filled by the liquid phase or by an annular flow pattern inside the channels mostly filled by the refrigerant vapor. Instead, during the microgravity phases, the fluid regime naturally turns into a slug-plug flow pattern. During the transition from 1.8 g to 0 g a rapid dry-out may occur in some of the channels, followed by a similarly fast reaction of liquid plugs moving towards the evaporator from the condenser zone. Such stop-and-start motion events continue during the whole microgravity period, leading to strong temperature oscillations, but also to a still acceptable thermal performance of the device.  相似文献

Several origins have been proposed for cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), including resident CD34+ stromal cells/telocytes (CD34+SCs/TCs). The characteristics and arrangement of mammary CD34+SCs/TCs are well known and invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast (ILC) is one of the few malignant epithelial tumours with stromal cells that can express CD34 or αSMA, which could facilitate tracking these cells. Our objective is to assess whether tissue-resident CD34+SCs/TCs participate in the origin of CAFs in ILCs. For this purpose, using conventional and immunohistochemical procedures, we studied stromal cells in ILCs (n:42) and in normal breasts (n:6, also using electron microscopy). The results showed (a) the presence of anti-CD34+ or anti-αSMA+ stromal cells in varying proportion (from very rare in one of the markers to balanced) around nests/strands of neoplastic cells, (b) a similar arrangement and location of stromal cells in ILC to CD34+SCs/TCs in the normal breast, (c) both types of stromal cells coinciding around the same nest of neoplastic cells and (d) the coexpression of CD34 and αSMA in stromal cells in ILC. In conclusion, our findings support the hypothesis that resident CD34+SCs/TCs participate as an important source of CAFs in ILC. Further studies are required in this regard in other tumours.  相似文献
