The goal of this paper is to present work that demonstrates the application of probabilistic modeling to evaluate the long-term performance of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rehabilitated piping components. The time-dependent reliability index is evaluated for a fully deteriorated piping component rehabilitated with FRP considering the demands of internal fluid pressure, external soil pressure, and traffic loading. Carbon FRP (CFRP) and glass FRP (GFRP) composites are compared and the influence of material deterioration, fiber volume fraction (FVF), and variation in thickness of the composite are assessed using a first order reliability method and compared to a steel pipe under similar loading. A CFRP rehabilitation scheme having a FVF greater than 40% would be needed to exceed the as-built reliability index of a steel pipe under time-dependent composite deterioration, while no practical GFRP FVF can achieve the performance of steel pipe in the presence of time-dependent composite deterioration. Variations in the coefficient of variation (COV) can adversely affect the safety of both FRP rehabilitation schemes where an increase in COV from 10 to 30% result in decreases in the reliability index by 39.4% for CFRP (40% FVF) and 39.7% for GFRP (40% FVF).  相似文献

Binary Alexis (1986) sequences are useful signals for fast start-up equalization, channel estimation, synchronization, or ranging. The aperiodic autocorrelation functions of Alexis sequences vanish in a broad window region when correlated using additional binary preamble and postamble sequences. Originally, Alexis sequences were found by computer search. Mode confinement to low-index "defect" regions of a two-dimensional square photonic lattice has been studied as a means to realize single-spatial-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). A selective etching process with two-step metal-organic chemical vapor deposition is used to fabricate the low-index defect VCSELs. A device with a 9-mum-wide aperture demonstrates 2.9-mW continuous-wave (CW) output power. The near diffraction-limited single-lobe far-field and high-resolution spectral analyses confirm single fundamental defect mode emission. Comparison studies between pulsed and CW operation indicate that thermal effects have a significant impact on the modal performance of the devices. Single-mode emission with more than 8 mW of peak pulsed power has been observed with short pulsewidth operation (0.1 mus, 2%). Improvements in thermal management are required to achieve higher CW single-mode emission in these devices  相似文献

Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory data from 478 male psychiatric inpatients (aged 18–86 yrs) were factor analyzed by a principal components procedure. Three factors were retained and labeled: Maladjustment, Extraverted Acting Out, and Psychoticism. Comparisons with prior factor analyses suggested a fairly stable underlying factor structure. Significant item overlap and scale intercorrelation, although theoretically (substantively) faithful, may contribute to artifactual invariance in the resultant structure. The authors evaluate a model suggesting that the performance of highly neurotic individuals, relative to their stable counterparts, is more strongly influenced by factors relating to the allocation of attentional resources. First, an air traffic control simulation was used to examine the interaction between effort intensity and scores on the Anxiety subscale of Eysenck Personality Profiler Neuroticism in the prediction of task performance. Overall effort intensity enhanced performance for highly anxious individuals more so than for individuals with low anxiety. Second, a longitudinal field study was used to examine the interaction between office busyness and Eysenck Personality Inventory Neuroticism in the prediction of telesales performance. Changes in office busyness were associated with greater performance improvements for highly neurotic individuals compared with less neurotic individuals. These studies suggest that highly neurotic individuals outperform their stable counterparts in a busy work environment or if they are expending a high level of effort. Highly reflective, surface‐metalized, flexible polyimide films were prepared by the incorporation of a soluble silver‐ion complex, (hexafluoroacetylacetonato)silver(I) (AgHFA), into dimethylacetamide solutions of poly(amic acid) prepared from 2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride and 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane. The thermal curing of solution‐cast silver(I)–poly(amic acid) films to 300°C led to cycloimidization of the amic acid with concomitant silver(I) reduction and the formation of a reflective, air‐side‐silvered surface at very low (2 wt % and 0.3 vol %) silver concentrations. The reflective surface evolved only when the cure temperature reached about 275°C, although X‐ray diffraction showed metallic silver in the hybrid film by 200°C. After a maximum specular reflectivity greater than 80% was achieved for the 2 wt % silver film, the specular reflectivity diminished sharply with further heating at a constant temperature of 300°C. Incorporating the AgHFA complex into the soluble, fully imidized form of poly{(1,3‐dihydro‐1,3‐dioxo‐2H‐isoindole‐2,5‐diyl)[2,2,2‐trifluoro‐1‐(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene](1,3‐dihydro‐1,3‐dioxo‐2H‐isoindole‐5,2‐diyl)‐1,4‐phenyleneoxy‐1,4‐phenylene[2,2,2‐trifluoro‐1‐(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]‐1,4‐phenyleneoxy‐1,4‐phenylene} gave films that were 25% less reflective than those beginning with poly(amic acid). Though highly reflective, the films were not electrically conductive. The metalized membranes were thermally stable and maintained mechanical properties similar to those of the parent polyimide. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an air‐side, near‐surface layer of silver that was about 40 nm thick; the interior of the film had well‐dispersed metal particles with diameters mostly less than 2 nm. The near‐surface silver layer maintained its integrity because of physical entrapment of the metal nanoparticles beneath a thin layer of polyimide; that is, the practical adhesion of the metal layer was good. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We discuss using computer algebras systems (CAS) in an undergraduate intermediate macroeconomics class. The criteria used in choosing a CAS are considered. One criterion was that students would bear little or no financial. The lessons learned in implementing a CAS – things that worked well and those that did not work so well – are noted.
