Environmental problems associated with the use of fossil fuels as well as their expected scarcity in the near future requires a search for new alternative fuels produced from renewable sources. Bioethanol is a biofuel that can be obtained from biomass and waste as feedstocks through fermentation. Two major routes allow conversion of the feedstocks to fermentable substrates, i.e. the hydrolytic route and the thermochemical route. In the hydrolytic route, the feedstock undergoes a pretreatment stage first, aimed at facilitating the subsequent hydrolytic treatment. Chemical, physical or biological pretreatments can be applied. Lignocellulosic feedstocks are mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The pretreatment attacks the lignin and hemicellulose polymers and makes cellulose more accessible in the next, hydrolytic, stage. The hydrolytic treatment uses enzymes to convert the cellulose polymer to simple, fermentable, sugars, mainly glucose. Simple sugars obtained from hemicellulose and cellulose are then fermented by yeasts to bioethanol. In the thermochemical alternative, the feedstock is gasified, yielding syngas – a mixture largely composed of CO, CO2 and H2 – which can be fermented anaerobically, usually by clostridia, to ethanol or other products. In both cases, downstream processes are then applied to recover and purify the biofuel. The different stages involved in both alternatives are described, and both processes are compared in terms of their main characteristics and development stage. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Transition metal oxides/silicon heterocontact solar cells are the subject of intense research efforts owing to their simpler processing steps and reduced parasitic absorption as compared with the traditional silicon heterostructure counterparts. Recently, molybdenum oxide (MoOx, x < 3) has emerged as an integral transition metal oxide for crystalline silicon (cSi)‐based solar cell based on carrier‐selective contacts (CSCs). In this paper, we physically modelled the CSC‐based cSi solar cell featuring MoOx/intrinsic a‐Si:H/n‐type cSi/intrinsic a‐Si:H/n+‐type a‐Si:H for the first time using Silvaco technology computer‐aided design simulator. To analyse the optical and electrical properties of the proposed solar cell, several technological parameters such as work function and thickness of MoOx contact layer, intrinsic a‐Si:H band gap, interface recombination, series resistance, and temperature coefficient have been evaluated. It has been shown that higher work function of MoO x induces the formation of a favourable Schottky barrier height as well as an inversion at the front interface, stimulating least resistive path for holes. Utilising thinner MoOx layer implies reduced tunnelling of minority charge carriers, thus enabling the device to numerically attain 25.33% efficiency. With an optimised interface recombination velocity and reduced parasitic absorption, the proposed device exhibited higher Voc of 752 mV, Jsc of 38.8 mA/cm2, fill‐factor of 79.0%, and an efficiency of 25.6%, which can be termed as the harbinger for industrial production of next‐generation efficient solar cell technology.  相似文献

Due to aging and environmental factors, system components may either fail or not function as expected, which causes unprecedented changes in the quality of the system. A timely detection of the onset of a fault in a component is crucial to a quality monitoring of a process if costly failures are to be avoided. However, finding the source of the failure is not trivial in systems with a large number of components and complex component relationships. In this paper, an efficient scheme to detect adverse changes in system reliability and find the failed component is proposed in order to have an effective process quality monitoring. The monitoring scheme has been made effective by implementing first the techniques of fixed-parameter Shewhart, MEWMA and Hotelling’s T2 control chart, and then the adaptive versions of Shewhart Chart, MEWMA and T2 control chart for counter checking the precision of quality reports. Once detected, the fault isolation scheme uses a Bayesian decision strategy based on the maximum correlation between the residual and one of a number of hypothesized residual estimates to generate a fault report. By doing so, the critical information about the presence or absence of a fault, and its isolation, is gained in a timely manner, thus making the quality monitoring system an effective tool for a variety of maintenance programs, especially of the preventive type. The proposed scheme is evaluated extensively on simulated examples, and on a physical fluid system exemplified by a benchmarked laboratory scale two-tank system to detect and isolate faults including sensor, actuator, and leakage ones.  相似文献

Factor I is a five-domain plasma serine protease which is essential for the regulation of the complement system. In order to express this, the factor I coding sequence was cloned into a recombinant baculovirus system, which was used to infect Trichoplusia ni cells. Using the native factor I leader sequence, recombinant factor I (rFI) was secreted into the culture medium. Purified rFI was recognised by polyclonal antisera and by the factor I-specific monoclonal antibody MRC-OX21. SDS PAGE showed that rFI was processed into two chains with molecular weights of 48,000 and 36,000. Amino acid sequence analysis showed that the N-terminal sequences of the rFI chains were the same as those of serum-derived factor I (sFI), confirming that processing was correct. Since both molecular weights were less than those observed for sFI, this is attributed to the replacement of complex-type oligosaccharides by high mannose ones in rFI. C3(NH,) cleavage assays showed that rFI had 55% the activity of sFI. Circular dichroism and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the protein folding of rFI and sFI were very similar. Both had a secondary structure low in alpha-helix and high in beta-sheet, as expected from crystal structure and multiple sequence alignment analyses. It is inferred that the reduced activity of rFI is attributable to its changed glycosylation. The availability of rFI and structures for the domains in factor I makes possible new approaches to determine the molecular basis of its interactions with factor H and C3b.  相似文献

The multidimensional character of renewable energy sources (RES) necessitates the collection of a number of related data in order to support EU policy needs. Apart from the technology and techno-physical data also socioeconomic (e.g. employment, turnover) data and R&D expenditures are of critical relevance. The monitoring of the above RES data with respect to the existing targets for RES is of significant importance. In addition to this, even though significant data gathering efforts have been implemented, a lot of fragmented data and deduced findings are currently available, which sometimes lack consistency and verification. As a result, RES data validation and completion capacity is needed in the framework of the European Union (EU) energy policy. In addition to this, agreed and validated RES data can help energy policy makers and relevant stakeholders answering to pressing energy socio-economics’ and sustainability issues. In this context, the main aim of the paper is to present a reference methodology for validating the RES Data in the EU. The development of the methodology is mainly based on the review of existing methods and ends up with recommendations for improvements in RES data aggregation and statistical interpretation, taking into consideration the related analysis of statisticians, energy technology experts and energy socio-economists.  相似文献

A simple and effective analytical procedure was developed for the determination of fenthion residues in human serum samples. The sample treatment was performed using the headspace solid-phase micro extraction with polyacrylate fiber, which has the advantage to require low amount of serum (1 mL) without tedious pre-treatment. The quantification of fenthion was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the recoveries ranged from 79 to 104% at two spiking levels for 6 replicates. Detection and quantification limits were calculated as 1.51 and 4.54 ng/mL of serum respectively. Two fenthion metabolites fenoxon and fenthion–sulfoxide were also identified.  相似文献

Optically transparent l-arginine trifluoroacetate (LATF) single crystals by doping with organic materials urea and thiourea were grown by slow solvent evaporation technique. Powder X-ray diffraction confirms improvement in the crystalline quality for urea doped crystals. Urea doping in LATF also improves the percentage of transmittance. The vibrational frequencies of the grown crystals were assigned by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal analysis (TG/DTA) indicated the better thermal stability for urea doped LATF crystals. EDAX analysis was carried out to calculate the percentage of elements present in doped and pure LATF. The hardness has been remarkably improved on urea and thiourea doped LATF crystals. The second harmonic generation (SHG) analysis showed 2.5 times than standard KDP for pure LATF and 2.2, 2.07 times than KDP for urea and thiourea doped LATF.  相似文献

The European Union (EU) is developing an increasingly close relationship with Moldova, going beyond cooperation, to gradual economic integration and a deepening of political cooperation. This fact indicates that eventually the adoption of EU legislation in the energy sector is a necessity. Therefore, the provision of a clear picture of the country’s renewable energy potential is considered essential, bearing in mind the new EU Renewable Energy Directive, which sets a mandatory target of 20% of renewable energy sources by 2020 for each member state. The aim of this paper is to discuss the perspective of renewable energy in Moldova taking into account the current energy framework and to analyze, whether it is suitable to adopt similar methodologies and policy frameworks applied in other EU countries.  相似文献

The development of renewable energy in the Arab States of the Gulf has been relatively low in spite of the large geographical potential for the use of these solutions. This market has been stifled by a combination of constraints, such as the absence of relative legal and policy framework, the high initial capital costs and the lack of commercial skills and information. Even though these states have not been interested in these energy solutions for many years, something seems to have changed recently, due to their accession to the Kyoto Protocol. The government, the private sector and the general public have started realizing the inevitability of putting climate change issues on the top of the list of priorities in the process of economic and social development. Apart from this, some renewable energy investments seem to be more available and effective solutions in the region, because of specified conditions and requirements in remote and isolated areas. The aim of this paper is to analyze in a coherent and integrated way the specific constraints hampering the development of renewable energy, to describe the relative efforts that are connected with the stated role of the renewable energy and to propose some useful recommendations for their future development.  相似文献
