The effects of minor additions of ruthenium (0.14%, 0.22%, and 0.28%) on the passivation of duplex stainless-steel (DSS, Fe–22%Cr–9%Ni–3%Mo) corrosion in 2 M HCl solutions have been studied using open-circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic cyclic polarization, potentiostatic current–time, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and weight loss measurements. OCP measurements showed an increased shift in the corrosion potential to more positive values with increasing Ru content. Polarization and EIS experiments indicated that the presence of Ru and the increase of its content decrease the corrosion rate, critical and passive current density, and polarization resistance. Moreover, it shifts the corrosion and pitting potentials to more positive values. Current–time measurements at −100, −50, and 50 mV versus Ag/AgCl also confirmed that the severity of pitting corrosion decreases with an increasing Ru content. Weight-loss time data showed good agreement with the electrochemical measurements.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Most adult anatomical texts state that the deep inguinal ring is situated midway between the anterior superior iliac spine and the pubic tubercle. The aim of this study was to determine if this was true in prepubescent children. METHODS: A total of 107 inguinal ligaments and canals were measured during inguinal operations in 80 children (68 boys, age range 1-118 months). RESULTS: The length of the inguinal ligament increased from a median of 4.3 cm (range 3.6-6.8) at less than 1 year of age to 7.5 cm (range 6.7-10.1) at over 4 years of age. The internal ring was situated medial to the midpoint of the inguinal ligament throughout childhood. The ratio of internal ring to public tubercle over inguinal ligament length was 42% (range 27-58) at less than 2 years; and 34% (range 25-46) at over 4 years. The inguinal canal remained short (median 1 cm (range 0.7-1.1) at less than 2 years, and median 1.1 cm (range 0.7-2.3) at over 4 years) suggesting that growth of the inguinal region in this age group occurs outside the canal. CONCLUSIONS: These results have implications for the siting of incisions, and question the necessity of opening the inguinal canal in children.  相似文献

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is stimulated in response to stress. When activated, it is suppressed by the negative feedback effect of glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids directly inhibit proopiomelanocortin (Pomc) gene expression in the pituitary. Glucocorticoid signaling is mediated via glucocorticoid receptors, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, and the FK506-binding immunophilins, Fkbp4 and Fkbp5. Fkbp4 and Fkbp5 differentially regulate dynein interaction and nuclear translocation of the glucocorticoid receptor, resulting in modulation of the glucocorticoid action. Here, we explored the regulation of Fkbp4 and Fkbp5 genes and their proteins with dexamethasone, a major synthetic glucocorticoid drug, in murine AtT-20 corticotroph cells. To elucidate further roles of Fkbp4 and Fkbp5, we examined their effects on Pomc mRNA levels in corticotroph cells. Dexamethasone decreased Pomc mRNA levels as well as Fkpb4 mRNA levels in mouse corticotroph cells. Dexamethasone tended to decrease Fkbp4 protein levels, while it increased Fkpb5 mRNA and its protein levels. The dexamethasone-induced decreases in Pomc mRNA levels were partially canceled by Fkbp4 knockdown. Alternatively, Pomc mRNA levels were further decreased by Fkbp5 knockdown. Thus, Fkbp4 contributes to the negative feedback of glucocorticoids, and Fkbp5 reduces the efficiency of the glucocorticoid effect on Pomc gene expression in pituitary corticotroph cells.  相似文献

Cells of the central nervous system (CNS) normally do not express detectable levels of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) Class I antigens. However, MHC Class I expression can be induced after virus infection. We tested the hypothesis that virus-induced Class I expression is mediated by lymphocytes or cytokines using lymphocyte- and cytokine-deficient mice. We used Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV), which induces CNS demyelination that maps genetically to the D region of MHC Class I and is associated with high levels of Class I products. TMEV infection of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and recombination activation gene-1-deficient mice, which lack B and T lymphocytes, resulted in equivalent H-2D and H-2K expression in brain and spinal cord, according to analysis of the area and intensity of immunoperoxidase staining. Class I antigens were demonstrated as early as 6 hours after infection, and they were more widely distributed than viral RNA, indicating that expression was induced indirectly via a soluble factor. To determine whether cytokines induced the expression, we infected mice lacking receptors for interferon-alpha/beta (IFN-alpha/beta R (-/-)), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma R(-/-)), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFRp55(-/-)). TMEV-infected IFN-gamma R(-/-) and TN-FRp55(-/-) mice expressed Class I antigens in the CNS, whereas IFN-alpha/beta R(-/-) mice did not, establishing that IFN-alpha/beta mediated the expression. In contrast to the equivalent expression in SCID mice, we observed greater area and higher intensity of H-2D versus H-2K antigens in infected SCID mice reconstituted with normal spleen cells. Collectively, the data indicate that after TMEV infection, early generalized MHC Class I expression is mediated by IFN-alpha/beta independently of lymphocytes, but the differential regulation of H-2D over H-2K may be controlled by B and/or T lymphocytes.  相似文献

In recent years, due to concerns on the potential effects of zinc on aquatic biota, zinc is receiving particular attention from regulatory agencies. A comprehensive exposure and risk assessment of zinc in Japanese surface waters was conducted to provide a scientific basis for developing realistic risk reduction measures for zinc. Emissions from corrosion contribute approximately 37% of the total zinc emissions to surface water in Japan. The zinc concentration distributions estimated using 12 years of monitoring data from 2075 sites by a maximum likelihood method indicated that the mean concentrations have gradually declined. The threshold concentrations (HC5 and PHC5) derived from organism- and population-level species sensitivity distributions were estimated to be 27 and 107 μg/L for total zinc, respectively. The risk characterization identified that during 1991-2002, 14.5-26.8% of the monitoring sites likely exceeded the HC5, whereas only 0.7-3.5% likely exceeded the PHC5. Evaluation of the effect of stormwater runoff to zinc concentrations in a river showed that zinc concentrations in river water increased significantly from roadway drainage flowing into the river. The cost-effectiveness analyses demonstrated that enforcement of the zinc national effluent standard may be effective at a certain level for public water areas in Japan; however, the degree of the effectiveness is highly dependent on the characteristics (e.g., sources and background) of the watersheds. An emissions and exposure assessment along with cost-effectiveness analysis is crucial for developing realistic and appropriate ecological risk management of zinc. The zinc RAD in Japan illustrated that in any “state-of-the science” method used, some degree of ecological risk from zinc can be observed in some Japanese water environments. On the other hand, zinc is a beneficial material for human industrial activities. Because zinc is an element, its role in industrial activities would be difficult to be substituted by other metals with less toxicity. In addition to improving science-based risk assessment methodologies which often focus on the toxicological perspectives, it is important to develop a more robust framework considering a trade-off between a damage in ecosystem and a benefit in human activities. A series of β-SiAlON:Eu2+ phosphors were synthesized from single-source precursors, perhydropolysilazane chemically modified with Al(OCH(CH3)2)3, AlCl3, and EuCl2. The single-source precursors were converted to β-SiAlON:Eu2+ phosphors by pyrolysis under flowing N2 or NH3 at 1000°C, followed by heat treatment at 1800°C under an N2 gas pressure at 980 kPa. By varying the molar ratio of the chemical modifiers, β-SiAlON:Eu2+ with the compositions close to the theoretical ones expressed as Si6−zAlzOz−2yN8−z+2y:yEu2+ were synthesized, where the z values and Eu2+ contents were controlled in the ranges of .44–.78 and .35–1.48 mol%, respectively. The polymer-derived β-SiAlON:Eu2+ phosphors exhibited green emission under excitation at 460 nm attributed to the 4f7–4f6(7f3)5d1 transition of dopant Eu2+. High-angle annular dark-field-scanning transmission microscopy analysis confirmed that the doped-Eu2+ existed interstitially within the channels along the c axis of host β-SiAlON. Compared with the conventional powder metallurgy route, the polymer-derived ceramic route in this study offers some advantages in the grain growth of host β-SiAlON and photoluminescence properties in terms of green emission intensity under excitation at 460 nm, and the highest intensity was achieved for the polymer-derived β-SiAlON:Eu2+ with z = .64 and .37 mol% Eu2+.  相似文献

Most cases of acute gastroenteritis and foodborne disease are not ascertained by public health surveillance because the ill person does not always seek medical care and submit a stool sample for testing, and the laboratory does not always test for or identify the causative organism. We estimated the total burden of acute gastroenteritis in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, using data from two 2-week cross-sectional, population-based telephone surveys conducted in 2006 and 2007. To estimate the number of acute gastroenteritis illnesses caused by Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Miyagi Prefecture, we determined the number of cases for each pathogen from active laboratory-based surveillance during 2005 to 2006 and adjusted for seeking of medical care and submission of stool specimens by using data from the population-based telephone surveys. Monte Carlo simulation was used to incorporate uncertainty. The prevalence of acute gastroenteritis in the preceding 4 weeks was 3.3% (70 of 2,126) and 3.5% (74 of 2,121) in the winter and summer months, yielding an estimated 44,200 episodes of acute gastroenteritis each year in this region. Among people with acute gastroenteritis, the physician consultation rate was 32.0%, and 10.9% of persons who sought care submitted a stool sample. The estimated numbers of Campylobacter-, Salmonella-, and V. parahaemolyticus -associated episodes of acute gastroenteritis were 1,512, 209, and 100 per 100,000 population per year, respectively, in this region. These estimates are significantly higher than the number of reported cases in surveillance in this region. Cases ascertained from active surveillance were also underrepresented in the present passive surveillance, suggesting that complementary surveillance systems, such as laboratory-based active surveillance in sentinel sites, are needed to monitor food safety in Japan.  相似文献

This paper presents a command shaping technique based on a minimum jerk control approach that takes into consideration target position correction during motion, for the fast and precise positioning in vibratory mechatronic systems. The positioning controller is designed using a two‐degree‐of‐freedom control: a feedback compensator is synthesized by H control design to ensure the robust stability, while a feedforward compensator suppresses the vibration in response based on a coprime factorization expression of the plant mechanism. The command shaping, on the other hand, eliminates the corresponding vibration components of the primary and secondary models in the position command, where the continuity of jerk component in the command can be ensured against the target position correction. The effectiveness of the proposed shaping technique has been verified by experiments using a table drive system on a machine stand. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 6-in diameter Fe-doped semi-insulating InP single crystals have been grown by the hot-wall liquid encapsulated Czochralski method. This method has a quartz inner vessel to stabilize the thermal convection. Temperature gradient and solid-liquid interface shape can be controlled by a multizone heater system. The weight of grown crystal was 18 kg and the full length was 250 mm. The dislocation density was about 1/spl times/10/sup 5/ cm/sup -2/. The resistivity was more than 1/spl times/10/sup 7/ /spl Omega/cm and its uniformity was the same as the smaller diameter crystal. The conditions of wafer processing were optimized to improve the wafer flatness. The rolloff and the slope of the wafer surface could be reduced especially by the improvement of the polishing conditions. The typical total thickness variation was 3.3 /spl mu/m, and it was comparable to the GaAs wafer.  相似文献
