Projecting a hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emission inventory to future years can provide valuable information for air quality management activities such as prediction of program successes and helping to assess future priorities. We have projected the 1999 National Emission Inventory for HAPs to numerous future years up to 2020 using the following tools and data: the Emissions Modeling System for Hazardous Air Pollutants (EMS-HAP), the National Mobile Inventory Model (NMIM), emission reduction information resulting from national standards and economic growth data. This paper discusses these projection tools, the underlying data, limitations and the results. The results presented include total HAP emissions (sum of pollutants) and toxicity-weighted HAP emissions for cancer and respiratory noncancer effects. Weighting emissions by toxicity does not consider fate, transport, or location and behavior of receptor populations and can only be used to estimate relative risks of direct emissions. We show these projections, along with historical emission trends. The data show that stationary source programs under Section 112 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and mobile source programs which reduce hydrocarbon and particulate matter emissions, as well as toxic emission performance standards for reformulated gasoline, have contributed to and are expected to continue to contribute to large declines in air toxics emissions, in spite of economic and population growth. We have also analyzed the particular HAPs that dominate the source sectors to better understand the historical and future year trends and the differences across sectors.  相似文献

The effect of skin, muscle, fat, and bone tissue on simulated surface electromyographic (EMG) signals was examined using a finite-element model. The amplitude and frequency content of the surface potential were observed to increase when the outer layer of a homogeneous muscle model was replaced with highly resistive skin or fat tissue. The rate at which the surface potential decreased as the fiber was moved deeper within the muscle also increased. Similarly, the rate at which the surface potential decayed around the surface of the model, for a constant fiber depth, increased. When layers of subcutaneous fat of increasing thickness were then added to the model, EMG amplitude, frequency content, and the rate of decay of the surface EMG signal around the limb decreased, due to the increased distance between the electrodes and the active fiber. The influence of bone on the surface potential was observed to vary considerably, depending on its location. When located close to the surface of the volume conductor, the surface EMG signal between the bone and the source and directly over the bone increased, accompanied by a slight decrease on the side of the bone distal to the active fiber. The results emphasize the importance of distinguishing between the effects of material properties and the distance between source and electrode when considering the influence of subcutaneous tissue, and suggest possible distortions in the surface EMG signal in regions where a bone is located close to the skin surface.  相似文献

Changes in surface electromyographic (EMG) amplitude during sustained, fatiguing contractions are commonly attributed to variations in muscle fiber conduction velocity (MFCV), motor unit firing rates, transmembrane action potentials and the synchronization or recruitment of motor units. However, the relative contribution of each factor remains unclear. Analytical relationships relating changes in MFCV and mean motor unit firing rates to the root mean square (RMS) and average rectified (AR) value of the surface EMG signal are derived. The relationships are then confirmed using model simulation. The simulations and analysis illustrate the different behaviors of the surface EMG RMS and AR value with changing MFCV and firing rate, as the level of motor unit superposition varies. Levels of firing rate modulation and short-term synchronization that, combined with variations in MFCV, could cause changes in EMG amplitude similar to those observed during sustained isometric contraction of the brachioradialis at 80% of maximum voluntary contraction were estimated. While it is not possible to draw conclusions about changes in neural control without further information about the underlying motor unit activation patterns, the examples presented illustrate how a combined analytical and simulation approach may provide insight into the manner in which different factors affect EMG amplitude during sustained isometric contractions.  相似文献

The utility of clonidine for hypertensive patients presenting for major vascular procedures remains debatable. Twenty-one hypertensive patients presenting for aortic surgery were given clonidine (n = 11) or placebo (n = 10) in a double-blind, randomized manner. Clonidine was administered 6 micrograms/kg per os 120 min before induction of anesthesia and 3 micrograms/kg intravenously (i.v.) over 60 min from aortic declamping to skin closure. Anesthesia was induced with alfentanil 20 micrograms/kg, midazolam, and atracurium and maintained with nitrous oxide 70%, an alfentanil infusion (0.25 microgram.kg-1. min-1), and isoflurane. Anesthetic requirements, circulatory variables, interventions, and isoproterenol dose-response curves (pre- and postoperatively) were determined. Plasma concentrations of clonidine, alfentanil, and vasoactive hormones were measured. When the clonidine group was compared with the placebo group, (a) isoflurane, alfentanil, and midazolam requirements were reduced by 38%, 42%, and 41%, respectively (P = 0.04, 0.03, 0.0002, respectively); (b) supplemental circulatory and anesthetic adjustments were reduced by 51% (P = 0.0006); (c) interventions with vasopressors were not significantly increased (placebo: two; clonidine: five); (d) systolic and mean arterial pressures and heart rate were reduced; (e) increases in norepinephrine, epinephrine, and plasma renin activity were suppressed, whereas vasopressin surge was attenuated; and (f) chronotropic response to isoproterenol was unaffected. Clonidine was effective in reducing anesthetic requirements and in improving circulatory stability in hypertensive patients presenting for major vascular procedures.  相似文献

The author reviews the advantages of surgery, which alone allows diagnosis in emergencies, serves to assess the extent of the disease, offers a means of preventing complications chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and has a therapeutic function. He also assesses the drawbacks of surgery and provides exact surgical indications depending on the circumstances and localization of the lymphoma. The oxidation of roquefortine C to the nitrone roquefortine L was investigated using a number of different electrophilic oxidizing reagents. mCPBA and Oxone were shown to be the most effective in achieving this transformation, while unfavorable steric interactions precluded oxidation by bulky reagents such as Davis oxaziridine. Finally, each of the oxidants was shown to promote aromatic hydroxylation following the synthesis of the nitrone functionality.  相似文献

Stricter regulation by OFWAT has encouraged water companies to optimize all stages of the water treatment process. This work reviews the ozonation process, in order to evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of continuous versus intermittent ozone operation. Two Advanced Water Treatment Works (AWTW) were surveyed, Farmoor AWTW, Which involves traditional (chemical) treatment processes, and Kempton Park AWTW, which incorporates slow sand filter sandwich? beds. Both reviews indicated that continuous ozone operation would result in an optimized solution based on dependability of ozone plant, reliability of water quality and cost efficiency.  相似文献

Feeding oils of different fatty acid composition modifies the fatty acid composition of cardiac membrane phospholipids, thereby inducing changes in cardiac contractility and altering response of adenylate cyclase to catecholamines. In the present study, the effect of such dietary manipulations on cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase, which is involved in the control of cyclic nucleotide intracellular levels and in the control of cardiac contractility, was investigated. Rats were fed either a saturated fatty acid-enriched diet (8 weight percent [%] coconut oil +2% sunflower oil), an n−6 fatty acid-enriched diet (10% sunflower oil) or an n−3 fatty acid-enriched diet (8% fish oil +2% sunflower oil). The fatty acid composition of cardiac phospholipids, as well as the nonesterified fatty acid content of heart were markedly altered by the diets. The 18∶2n−6 and 20∶4n−6 content of cardiac phospholipids was markedly (−49%) depressed by fish oil as compared with sunflower oil feeding, but the nonesterified fatty acid level of heart membrane was lowest in coconut oil-fed rats. In addition, fish oil feeding more drastically depressed the n−6/n−3 fatty acid ratio in the nonesterified fatty acid pool than in cardiac phospholipids. Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase activity was the lowest in both the particulate and soluble fractions of heart from rats fed sunflower oil, whereas cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase activity was not altered by the diets. Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase activity was decreased by 18 and 12% in heart membranes of the sunflower oil group as compared to that of the coconut oil and fish oil groups, respectively. In heart cytosol, the activity decreased by 30% when compared with the activity of the coconut oil group. Additionalin vitro experiments showed that polyunsaturated fatty acids were more potent inhibitors of cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase than saturated fatty acids. These results suggest that polyunsaturated fatty acid-enriched diets might decrease heart cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase activity by increasing non-esterified polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially those of the n−6 series, but more complex and indirect mechanisms are very likely to be involved.  相似文献

The anodic behaviour of tin in neutral phosphate solution has been investigated by means of a rotating disc and ring disc electrode. During the anodic reaction on the disc, a cathodic current is observed on the ring resulting from the reduction of soluble species produced on the disc at low potential and of oxygen at high potential.
