The seeds of four prairie fruits—chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), thorny buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), Woods’ rose (Rosa woodsii) and hawthorn (Crataegus × mordenensis)—from Southern Alberta were investigated. The lipid contents of the seeds were found to be 10.4, 11.5, 3.7 and 3.4%, respectively.
The tested seed lipids contained mainly linoleic acid in the range from 27.9 to 65.6% and oleic acid from 19.7 to 61.9%. The
thorny buffaloberry and Woods’ rose seed lipids contained 29.2 and 30.8% of linolenic acid, respectively. The contents of
palmitic and stearic acids ranged from 3.2 to 5.4% and 1.6 to 2.2%, respectively. The contents of total tocopherols in the
chokecherry, thorny buffaloberry, Woods’ rose and hawthorn seed lipids accounted for 595, 897, 2,358 and 2,837 mg/kg, respectively.
The main sterols in the lipids were β-sitosterol, Δ5-avenasterol, cycloartenol, campesterol, stigmasterol and gramisterol. The results of the present study show that the lipids
from the seeds of the investigated prairie fruits could be a good source of valuable essential fatty acids, tocopherols and

The electrochemical behavior of poly(phenylvinylsilylcarbodiimide)-derived SiCN ceramics as anode material for lithium-ion batteries is reported here for the first time. The novel carbon-rich silicon carbonitride (SiCN) ceramics have been synthesized by the thermal treatment of poly(phenylvinylsilylcarbodiimide) under argon atmosphere at five temperatures, namely 1100, 1300, 1500, 1700 and 2000 °C. The SiCN electrodes were prepared without any conducting additives and were tested in electrochemical two electrodes cell using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic techniques. The capacity of the carbon-rich SiCN samples was found to be stable upon galvanostatic cycling and reaches almost 300 mAh/g for the sample prepared at 1300 °C with oxygen as the impurity. The dependence of the microstructure, especially of the crystallinity of the segregated carbon phase and of the oxygen impurities on the electrochemical behavior of the SiCN material, was analysed. The lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidants were evaluated in eight plants: safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare), quince (Cydonia vulgaris), evening primrose (Oenothera biennis), rose mosqueta (Rosa affinis rubiginosa), black seed (Nigella sativa), sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) and borage (Borago officinales). The highest amounts of tocopherols were contained in seeds of borage and sea buckthorn (66.9 mg/100 g and 45.9 mg/100 g,
respectively). The sea buckthorn seed lipids had the highest amount of total sterols (10.4 mg/g of lipids). The predominant
form was campesterol. Sitosterol was the major sterol in the lipids of other tested seeds. The content of phenolic compounds
ranged from 736.5 mg/100 g dry matter (d.m.) (evening primrose) to 74.8 mg/100 g d.m. (safflower). The highest antioxidant
activity, expressed in % scavenged DPPH· free radicals, was observed for evening primrose (91.2%), while the lowest for safflower
(36.2%). The correlation coefficient between the level of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity was 0.53. 相似文献

Chloride ion is in part bound into ordinary Portland cement paste and modifies its mineralogy. To understand this a literature review of its impacts has been made and new experimental data were obtained. Phase pure preparations of Friedel's salt, Ca4Al2(Cl)1.95(OH)12.05·4H2O, and Kuzel's salt, Ca4Al2(Cl)(SO4)0.5(OH)12·6H2O, were synthesized and their solubilities were measured at 5, 25, 55 and 85 °C. After equilibration, solid phases were analysed by X-ray diffraction while the aqueous solutions were analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy and ion chromatography. The solid solutions and interactions of Friedel's salt with other AFm phases were determined at 25 °C experimentally and by calculations. In hydrated cements, anion sites in AFm are potentially occupied by OH, SO4 and CO3 ions whereas Cl may be introduced under service conditions. Chloride readily displaces hydroxide, sulfate and carbonate in the AFm structures. A comprehensive picture of phase relations of AFm phases and their binding capacity for chloride is provided for pH ∼ 12 and 25 °C. The role of chloride in AFt formation and its relevance to corrosion of embedded steel are discussed in terms of calculated aqueous [Cl−]/[OH−] molar ratios. 相似文献

Numerous molecular factors disrupt the correctness of the cell cycle process leading to the development of cancer due to increased cell proliferation. Among known causative factors of such process is abnormal gene expression. Nowadays in the light of current knowledge such alterations are frequently considered in the context of mRNA–miRNA correlation. One of the molecular factors with potential value in tumorigenesis is the feedback loop between MYC and E2F genes in which miR-17-5p and miR-20a from the miR-17-92 cluster are involved. The current literature shows that overexpression of the members of the OncomiR-1 are involved in the development of many solid tumors. In the present work, we investigated the expression of components of the MYC/E2F/miR-17-92 network and their closely related elements including members of MYC and E2F families and miRNAs from two paralogs of miR-17-92: miR-106b-25 and miR-106a-363, in the most common brain tumors of childhood, pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), WHO grade 1; ependymoma (EP), WHO grade 2; and medulloblastoma (MB), WHO grade 4. We showed that the highest gene expression was observed in the MYC family for MYCN and in the E2F family for E2F2. Positive correlation was observed between the gene expression and tumor grade and type, with the highest expression being noted for medulloblastomas, followed by ependymomas, and the lowest for pilocytic astrocytomas. Most members of miR-17-92, miR-106a-363 and miR-106b-25 clusters were upregulated and the highest expression was noted for miR-18a and miR-18b. The rest of the miRNAs, including miR-19a, miR-92a, miR-106a, miR-93, or miR-25 also showed high values. miR-17-5p, miR-20a obtained a high level of expression in medulloblastomas and ependymomas, while close to the control in the pilocytic astrocytoma samples. miRNA expression also depended on tumor grade and histology. 相似文献

Acute leukemias, the most common cancers in children, are characterized by excessive proliferation of malignant progenitor cells. As a consequence of impaired blood cell production, leukemia patients are susceptible to infectious complications—a major cause of non-relapse mortality. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are involved in various pathologies, from autoimmunity to cancer. Although aberrant NETs formation may be partially responsible for immune defects observed in acute leukemia, still little is known on the NET release in the course of leukemia. Here, we present the first comprehensive evaluation of NETs formation by neutrophils isolated from children with acute leukemia in different stages of the disease and treatment stimulated in vitro with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP), and calcium ionophore (CI). NETs release was measured using quantitative fluorescent method and visualized microscopically. In this setting, NETs release was significantly impaired in leukemic children both at the diagnosis and during the treatment, and full restoration of neutrophil function was achieved only after successful completion of the leukemia treatment. We suggest that neutrophil function impairment may result from both disease- and treatment-related factors. In this context, deficient innate immune response observed in acute leukemia patients may be present regardless of neutrophil count and contribute to secondary immunodeficiency observed in this population. 相似文献

Although the role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in tissue regeneration has been confirmed in many studies, the mechanism of this process is still not fully understood. Human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells were used as an experimental model for studies on the effects of PRP on cell proliferation, migration, collagen biosynthesis, prolidase activity, and its expression and anabolic signaling. The activation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), β1-integrin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) by PRP were investigated by western blot and immunocytochemistry. It has been found that PRP induced keratinocytes migration and proliferation through activation of cell cycle progression and EGFR downstream signaling. Similar biological effects were achieved by an addition to the culture medium of prolidase (PEPD), a ligand of EGFR (PRP is a rich source of PEPD–2 ng/mL). PRP-dependent stimulation of collagen biosynthesis was accompanied by an increase in the expression of NF-κβ, IGF-1R-downstream signaling proteins, and PEPD activity. The data suggest that PRP activates a complex of growth factors and adhesion receptors that stimulate cell proliferation, migration, and collagen biosynthesis. PRP induces PEPD-dependent human keratinocyte proliferation through activation of the EGFR receptor. Our study provides a novel mechanism of PRP-dependent wound healing. 相似文献

Whilst the survival rates of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have increased remarkably over the last decades, the therapy resistance and toxicity are still the major causes of treatment failure. It was shown that overexpression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) promotes proliferation and chemoresistance of cancer cells. In humans, the HO-1 gene (HMOX1) expression is modulated by two polymorphisms in the promoter region: (GT)n-length polymorphism and single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) A(−413)T, with short GT repeat sequences and 413-A variants linked to an increased HO-1 inducibility. We found that the short alleles are significantly more frequent in ALL patients in comparison to the control group, and that their presence may be associated with a higher risk of treatment failure, reflecting the role of HO-1 in chemoresistance. We also observed that the presence of short alleles may predispose to develop chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. In case of SNP, the 413-T variant co-segregated with short or long alleles, while 413-A almost selectively co-segregated with long alleles, hence it is not possible to determine if SNPs are actually of phenotypic significance. Our results suggest that HO-1 can be a potential target to overcome the treatment failure in ALL patients. 相似文献

Polyoxometalates (POMs), molecular metal oxide anions, are inorganic clusters with promising antiviral activity. Herein we report increased anti-HIV-1 activity of a POM when electrostatically combined with organic counter-cations. To this end, Keggin-type cerium tungstate POMs have been combined with organic methyl-caffeinium (Caf) cations, and their cytotoxicity, antiviral activity and mode of action have been studied. The novel compound, Caf4K[β2-CeSiW11O39]×H2O, exhibits sub-nanomolar antiviral activity and inhibits HIV-1 infectivity by acting on an early step of the viral infection cycle. This work demonstrates that combination of POM anions and organic bioactive cations can be a powerful new strategy to increase antiviral activity of these inorganic compounds. 相似文献
