Piperacillin/tazobactam‐induced neurotoxicity in a hemodialysis patient: A case report

Antibiotics are potentially a cause of neurotoxicity in dialysis patients, the most common are the beta‐lactams as ceftazidime and cefepime, and few cases have been reported after piperacillin/tazobactam use. This report presents a case of a hypertensive and diabetic 67‐year‐old woman in regular hemodialysis, which previously had a stroke. She was hospitalized presenting pneumonia, which was initially treated with cefepime. Two days after treatment, she presented dysarthria, left hemiparesis, ataxia, and IX and X cranial nerves paresis. Computed tomography showed no acute lesions and cefepime neurotoxicity was hypothesized, and the antibiotic was replaced by piperacillin/tazobactam. The neurologic signs disappeared; however, 4 days after with piperacillin/tazobactam treatment, the neurological manifestations returned. A new computed tomography showed no new lesions, and the second antibiotic regimen withdrawn. After two hemodialysis sessions, the patient completely recovered from neurological manifestations. The patient presented sequentially neurotoxicity caused by two beta‐lactams antibiotics. This report meant to alert clinicians that these antibiotics have dangerous neurological effects in chronic kidney disease patients.     

Linear friction welding of Ti6Al4V: experiments and modelling

Linear friction welding of the Ti6Al4V alloy is studied. A new definition of the energy input rate is proposed, based on an integration over time of the in-plane force and velocity; a strong correlation with the upset rate is then found. The effective friction coefficient is estimated to be 0·5±0·1 for varying frequencies and amplitudes, with only a weak dependence on the processing conditions displayed. A model is proposed that accounts for both the conditioning and equilibrium stages of the process, which is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The model is used to study the mechanism by which the flash is formed. A criterion is proposed by which the rippled nature of its morphology can be predicted.     

Simulation of characteristics of double-junction solar cells based on ZnSiP2 heterostructures on silicon substrate

Design and operation modes of double-junction monolithic lattice-matched solar cells based on the ZnSiP₂/Si system of materials have been calculated. The effect of the photoactive region thickness and minority carrier lifetime in ZnSiP₂ layers on the efficiency of conversion of the incident solar light energy into electrical power was determined. It is shown that solar cells based on ZnSiP₂/Si heterostructures can provide efficiencies of 28.8% at AM1.5D, 100 mW/cm², and 33.3% at AM1.5D, 200 W/cm².

Conveyer-belt accidents in mining and metallurgy

The dynamic interaction between the mechanical and electrical drive parameters when damage suddenly appears in the mechanical part of a conveyer belt is investigated. The possibility of using the change in the motor’s electrical parameters as a diagnostic signal is assessed. A model for investigating the dynamic processes in the system consisting of the grid, the induction motor, and the conveyer belt is proposed. The grid and induction motor are described by a model of fourth-order state space, whose output is the torque at the motor shaft. The moments of inertia and pliability of the links between the elements in the mechanical part of the conveyer belt are determined. By gradually identifying the elements with the minimum moment of inertia and distributing their moments of inertia and pliabilities among the adjacent elements, we obtain a three-mass system simulating the mechanical part of the conveyer belt. This dynamic model is solved by means of Matlab Simulink software. The energy characteristics of the drive are determined in dynamic processes following a mechanical accident.     

The influence of sonication time on the biogenic amines formation as a critical point in uncured dry-fermented beef manufacturing

In this study, the influence of sonication time on the biogenic amines formation as a critical point in uncured dry-fermented beef manufacturing was studied. Samples of musculus semimembranosus were sonicated at different times (5 and 10 min) using ultrasound cold bath (4 °C) in acid whey (US 40 kHz and acoustic power 480 W). The effect of sonication on biogenic amine (BA) formation was investigated during 93 days of ripening period. Other parameters (pH value, water activity, microbial counts) that might provide further information on the product under study were also determined. The use of ultrasound during beef marinating in acid whey has a positive effect on retarding histamine (HIS), cadaverine (CAD), tyramine (TYR) and putrescine (PUT) formation. Moreover, the sonication treatment did not inhibit the growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in dry-fermented beef during the whole ripening period. The pathogen bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium sp., Listeria monocytogenes) were not detected in all samples neither after 31 nor after 93 days of ripening period.     

Role of Co in formation of Ni-Ti clusters in maraging stainless steel

The effect of Co addition on the formation of Ni-Ti clusters in maraging stainless steel was studied by three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and first-principles calculation. The cluster analysis based on the maximum separation approach showed an increase in size but a decrease in density of Ni-Ti clusters with increasing the Co content. The first-principles calculation indicated weaker Co-Ni (Co-Ti) interactions than Co-Ti (Fe-Ti) interactions, which should be the essential reason for the change of distribution characteristics of Ni-Ti clusters in bcc Fe caused by Co addition.     

Analysis of ventilation of working areas in thick gently dipping coalbeds

The authors analyze ventilation schemes used in working areas in thick gently dipping seams in order to reveal influence exerted by the schemes, methods and parameters of ventilation on distribution of air loss in mined-out areas.
