OBJECTIVES: To analyse brand nicotine yield including "ultra low" brands (that is, cigarettes yielding less-than-or-equal 0.1 mg of nicotine by Federal Trade Commission (FTC) methods) in relation to nicotine intake (urinary nicotine, cotinine and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine) among 246 Japanese male smokers. DESIGN: Cross sectional study. SETTING: Two companies in Osaka, Japan. SUBJECTS: 130 Japanese male workers selected randomly during their annual regular health check up and 116 Japanese male volunteers taking part in a smoking cessation programme. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Subjects answered a questionnaire about smoking habits. Following the interview, each participant was asked to smoke his own cigarette and, after extinguishing it, to blow expired air into an apparatus for measuring carbon monoxide concentration. Urine was also collected for the assays of nicotine metabolites. RESULTS: We found wide variation in urinary nicotine metabolite concentrations at any given nicotine yield. Based on one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the urinary nicotine metabolite concentrations of ultra low yield cigarette smokers were significantly lower compared to smokers of high (p = 0.002) and medium yield cigarettes (p = 0.017). On the other hand, the estimated nicotine intake per ultra low yield cigarette smoked (0.59 mg) was much higher than the 0.1 mg indicated by machine. CONCLUSIONS: In this study of Japanese male smokers, actual levels of nicotine intake bore little relation to advertised nicotine yield levels. Our study reinforces the need to warn consumers of inappropriate advertisements of nicotine yields, especially low yield brands.  相似文献

PEG-lignin fibers obtained by a solvolysis pulping of Japanese cedar with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 were successfully converted into defective-free, infusible fibers as a precursor for carbon fibers (CFs) by chemical curing followed by oxidative thermostabilization. The curing was performed by immersing PEG-lignin fibers in an aqueous mixed solution of hexamethylenetetramine (60 g/L) and hydrochloric acid (3 M) at 85°C for 1 h, resulting in the formation of crosslinkages between lignin molecules through methylene groups. These cured fibers were completely thermostabilized upon heating up to 250°C at a heating rate of 2°C/min under an air atmosphere. Finally, the thermostabilized fibers were carbonized to yield CFs, which showed about 1.5 times the tensile strength of our CFs previously prepared.  相似文献

Silver nanorods were prepared by a seed-mediated growth approach, and self-assembled into two-dimensional ordered arrays on glass substrates. The polarization-dependent optical responses of the rods were measured, which indicated ordered alignment. These arrays were evaluated as potential surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates using trans-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene molecules. The SERS signals were observed to be enhanced with the increase of the aspect ratio of the Ag nanorod, and this was mainly attributed to the local field enhancement. The lateral arrangement of the Ag nanorod arrays was also partially responsible for the SERS enhancement.  相似文献

In our research, we present the controlled synthesis of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) protected Pt-Pd nanoparticles of various alloy and core-shell morphologies by modified polyol method with the assistance of AgNO3. The Pt-Pd alloy and core-shell nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and electrochemical measurements. The comparison of electrocatalytic properties of Pd-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles was described to confirm their highest catalytic performance. Importantly, the catalytic activity of Pt-Pd alloy and core-shell nanoparticles was investigated to develop novel electrocatalysts in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The results showed that the core-shell nanoparticles with the thin nanoshells as monolayers exhibit as great nanocatalysts. The correlation among structure, size and morphology was presented in their catalytic characterization.  相似文献

Managing protein–protein interactions is essential for resolving unknown biological events at the molecular level and developing drugs. We have designed and synthesized a side‐chain‐crosslinked helical peptides based on the binding domain of a pro‐apoptotic protein (Bad) that induces programed cell death. The peptide showed high helical content and bound to its target, Bcl‐XL, more strongly than its non‐crosslinked counterparts. When HeLa cells were incubated with the crosslinked peptide, the peptide entered the cytosol across the plasma membrane. The peptide formed a stable complex with Bcl‐XL localized at the outer mitochondrial membrane, and this binding event caused the release of cytochrome c from the intermembrane space of mitochondria into the cytosol. This activated the caspase cascade: 70 % of HeLa cells died by the apoptosis pathway (without evidence of necrosis).  相似文献

Calcium phosphate invert glasses, which contain P2O72− and PO43− ions, have been prepared via the addition of a small amount of TiO2. The formation of bonelike calcium phosphate apatite on the surface of the phosphate invert glasses was examined in simulated body fluid (SBF) at a temperature of 37°C. Soaking for 20 d resulted in the deposition of leaflike apatite particles on 6CaO·3P2O5·TiO2 invert glass (based on molar ratio). The glass had much-greater chemical durability against SBF, in comparison with a metaphosphate glass; P ions were not dissolved excessively from the 6CaO·3P2O5·TiO2 glass, so the apatite formation was not suppressed.  相似文献

Radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) in toluene was investigated in the presence of hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA). We succeeded in directly preparing syndiotactic-rich poly(NIPAAm), the syndiotacticity of which (r=70%) is the highest among those of radically-prepared poly(NIPAAm)s so far reported, by lowering polymerization temperature to −60 °C in the presence of a two-fold amount of HMPA. The NMR analysis revealed that the induced syndiotactic-specificity was ascribed to 1:1 complex formation between NIPAAm and HMPA. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis described that the induced syndiotactic-specificity was enthalpically achieved.  相似文献

Self-ordering of anodic porous alumina formed in organic acid electrolytes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
New self-ordering porous alumina films were fabricated in organic acid electrolytes. Highly ordered cell arrangements of porous alumina films were realized in malonic acid at 120 V and tartaric acid at 195 V having 300 nm and 500 nm pore intervals, respectively. Self-organization was achieved at the maximum voltage required to induce high-current-density anodization while preventing burning, i.e., an extremely high-current flow concentrated at local points. The cells of the film grown at a high field must be pressed against each other, so that the self-ordering proceeds with the porous layer growth. When the self-ordering of cell arrangement proceeds, the cells became smaller. To improve the regularity of the cell configuration, a low electrolyte temperature and a relatively high electrolyte concentration were effective for maintaining a high-current-density to prevent burning. Surface flatness was an essential factor for self-ordering, however, the surface oxide film produced by electropolishing an aluminum substrate prevented quick pore growth in the organic acids having a low dissociation constant. It is confirmed that electropolishing followed by alkaline treatment was most appropriate as the pre-treatment in preparing flat surfaces.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A powder solid dispersion system (SD) of ketoprofen (KP) or ibuprofen (IP), which possess low melting points, plus crospovidone (CrosPVP), have good fluidity characteristics and can be used to formulate tablets. Tablets of KP or IP in the SD of adequate hardness within a narrow weight range can be prepared by direct compression. Addition of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) resulted in greater hardness characteristics and less variation in tablet weight. Forces during the tableting process were measured with a tableting process analyzer (TabAll) equipped with a single-punch for determining capping and sticking properties during the tableting process. Pressure transmission ratio from the upper to the lower punch and die wall force were increased by adding 1% magnesium stearate (MS) to the SD. Ejection force decreased when MS was added to the SD. When tablets of the IP SD were prepared without excipient, scraper pressure (SP) was large, resulting in sticking. However, addition of 1% MS, lowered the SP value and eliminated sticking. Thus, an SD of compounds with a low melting point such as KP or IP is suitable for tablet manufacture by direct compression with the addition of 1% MS.  相似文献

Electron transport across individual Si nanochains and silicide nanochains is investigated using a micro-manipulator in a transmission electron microscope. The current increases nonlinearly with increasing the bias voltage. Electrical breakdowns occur with a current typically as large as 10(1)-10(2) nA. Furthermore, some FN plots exhibit a bend presumably due to the formation of a heavily distorted nanotube of carbon.  相似文献
