There is a risk of a building suffering unsustainable structural damage in the event of a large fire. Therefore, it is necessary to design buildings to withstand expected fires. A widely used simplified calculation method is the so-called “time-equivalence” method. There are significant concerns about the suitability of this method. This paper is part II of a twofold study examining the state of the art of time-equivalence methods. The purpose of this paper is to identify methods and/or analysis concepts which show the potential for use in modern design. A SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis is used for this purpose. However, as there is a large number of time-equivalence methods to assess, a numerical case study is first undertaken to identify methods which have sufficient accuracy to warrant further study. These analyses found that, while none of the time-equivalence methods studied have sufficient accuracy for use in their present form, the methods derived using the equal energy concept provide a good basis to model the effects of fire on a structure. This study recommends that a new time-equivalence method be developed using the equal energy approach.  相似文献

The solution behaviour of β-glucans in a gastrointestinal model was investigated in order to explore the mechanisms explaining the physiological effects of the soluble fibre. Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation was used to determine the molar mass distribution, and in-line calcofluor labelling allowed specific detection of β-glucans in complex samples. When dispersed in water, weight-average molar mass (Mw) was determined to 1 × 106 g/mol for pure oat and barley β-glucans, and 200 × 106 g/mol for β-glucans in oat bran, indicating that the β-glucans were aggregating. Samples from the gastric digestion displayed disrupted aggregates, while samples from the small intestinal digestion contained re-formed aggregates. Additionally, the aggregates from pure β-glucans were considerably denser after intestinal digestion. This may be construed as gel-formation in the small intestine, which should be tested for its relevance to health effects. Our results signal the difficulties in predicting β-glucan activity in the gastrointestinal tract purely from analysis of the fibre-rich product.  相似文献

MIMO has been proposed as an extension to 3G and Wireless LANs. As an implementation scheme of MIMO systems, V-BLAST is suitable for the applications with very high data rates. The square root algorithm for V-BLAST detection is attractive to hardware implementations due to its low computational complexity and numerical stability. In this paper, the fixed-point implementation of the square root algorithm is analyzed, and a low complexity VLSI architecture is proposed. The proposed architecture is scalable for various configurations, and implemented for a 4 × 4 QPSK V-BLAST system in a 0.35 m CMOS technology. The chip core covers 9 and 190 K gates. The detection throughput of the chip depends on the received symbol packet length. When the packet length is larger than or equal to 100 bytes, it can achieve a maximal detection throughput of 128 160 Mb/s at a maximal clock frequency of 80 MHz. The core power consumption, measured at 2.7 V and room temperature, is about 608 mW for 160 Mb/s data rate at 80 MHz, and 81 mW for 20 Mb/s at 10 MHz. The proposed architecture is shown to meet the requirements for emerging MIMO applications, such as 3G HSDPA and IEEE 802.11n.  相似文献

T-1-family conotoxins belong to the T-superfamily and are composed of 10-17 amino acids. They share a common cysteine framework and disulfide connectivity and exhibit unusual posttranslational modifications, such as tryptophan bromination, glutamic acid carboxylation, and threonine glycosylation. We have isolated and characterized a novel peptide, Mo1274, containing 11 amino acids, that shows the same cysteine pattern, -CC-CC, and disulfide linkage as those of the T-1-family members. The complete sequence, GNWCCSARVCC, in which W denotes bromotryptophan, was derived from MS-based de novo sequencing. The FT-ICR MS/MS techniques of electron capture dissociation (ECD), infrared multiphoton dissociation, and collision-induced dissociation served to detect and localize the tryptophan bromination. The bromine contributes a distinctive isotopic distribution in all fragments that contain bromotryptophan. ECD fragmentation results in the loss of bromine and return to the normal isotopic distribution. Disulfide connectivity of Mo1274, between cysteine pairs 1-3 and 2-4, was determined by mass spectrometry in combination with chemical derivatization employing tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine, followed by differential alkylation with N-ethylmaleimide and iodoacetamide. The ECD spectra of the native and partially modified peptide reveal a loss of bromine in a process that requires the presence of a disulfide bond.  相似文献

Specific markers for diseases associated with protein aggregate depositions are of great interest. Here we report the use of conjugated polyelectrolytes as conformation-sensitive optical probes for histological labeling of amyloid deposits in ex vivo tissue samples-amyloid light chains in primary systemic amyloidosis, islet amyloid polypeptide in human pancreas, and Abeta amyloid in Alzheimer's disease. Under suitable conditions, these probes bind specifically to amyloid deposits, and this is seen as an orange-red emission from the polyelectrolyte. Furthermore, the probes emit light of different colors when bound to different amyloid deposits or other intracellular structures. This phenomenon is most probably due to differences in the protein conformation in these structures. Hence, different protein conformations will generate geometric alterations of the bound polyelectrolyte backbone, affording different emissions from the bound probe. Conformation-sensitive probes thus provide a direct link between spectral signal and protein conformation. Finally, the probes also proved useful for ex vivo fluorescence imaging by multiphoton excitation.  相似文献

The gasification reactivity of char from dried sewage sludge (DSS) applicable to fluidized bed gasification (FBG) was determined. The char was generated by devolatilizing the DSS with nitrogen at the selected bed temperature and was subsequently gasified by switching the fluidization agent to mixtures of CO2 and N2 (CO2 reactivity tests) and steam and N2 (H2O reactivity tests).. The tests were conducted in the temperature range of 800–900 °C at atmospheric pressure, using partial pressure of the main reactant in the mixture (CO2 or H2O) in the range of 0.10–0.30 bar. Expressions for the intrinsic reactivity (free of diffusion effects) as a function of temperature, partial pressure of gas reactant (CO2 or H2O) and degree of conversion were obtained for each reaction. For the whole range of conversion it was found that the char reactivity in an H2O–N2 mixture was roughly three times higher than that in a mixture with the corresponding partial pressure of CO2. The reactivity was only influenced by particle size greater than 1.2 mm in the tests with steam at 900 °C. It was demonstrated that the method of char preparation greatly influences the reactivity, highlighting the importance of generating the char in conditions similar to that in FBG.  相似文献

Epitaxially grown, high quality semiconductor InSb nanowires are emerging material systems for the development of high performance nanoelectronics and quantum information processing and communication devices and for the studies of new physical phenomena in solid state systems. Here, we report on measurements of a superconductor-normal conductor-superconductor junction device fabricated from an InSb nanowire with aluminum-based superconducting contacts. The measurements show a proximity-induced supercurrent flowing through the InSb nanowire segment with a critical current tunable by a gate in the current bias configuration and multiple Andreev reflection characteristics in the voltage bias configuration. The temperature dependence and the magnetic field dependence of the critical current and the multiple Andreev reflection characteristics of the junction are also studied. Furthermore, we extract the excess current from the measurements and study its temperature and magnetic field dependences. The successful observation of the superconductivity in the InSb nanowire-based Josephson junction device indicates that InSb nanowires provide an excellent material system for creating and observing novel physical phenomena such as Majorana fermions in solid-state systems.  相似文献
