Alternating,all-trans polyenynes: Model compounds for poly(diacetylene)s with defined conjugation length

The syntheses of polyenynes as model compounds for poly(diacetylene)s (PDAs) are described. Variation of properties (UV–VIS, Raman, NMR and bond geometries) as a function of the chain length was investigated. After extrapolation to infinite chain length these data were compared to those for PDAs. From UV–VIS spectra a value of λ = 551 nm (2.25 eV) was calculated corresponding to the electronic transition of a single polyenyne chain. This energy is located at the low energy end of a yellow PDA solution spectrum. From Raman scattering v_(C?C) = 2108–2128 cm^?1 and v_(C?C) = 1505–1532 cm^?1 were calculated after extrapolation. Similarly sp-C¹³C NMR data yielded a shift of δ = 100 ppm. These data are almost identical to data known for yellow PDA solutions. Bond geometries are almost identical to those of poly(diacetylene)s and theoretical data.     

Electrical characterization of the SiO2---Si system

The classical capacitance-voltage measurement methods and the conductance technique which are frequently used to analyze the SiO₂---Si system, are briefly introduced and critically evaluated. These measurement techniques are based on macroscopic device structures, average structure parameters are determined. Transient and random telegraph signal measurements, and charge pumping are now available as new methods to study the SiO₂---Si interface in sub-μm device structures. These techniques permit to analyze single, individual traps in the interface. Traps in small devices are isolated. The capture rates are thermally activated by the Coulomb energy.

1. Sandblasting of hardwood and softwood cross-sections reveals unexpected hardness profiles, which may provide an extension to the conventional division of wood into annual rings, earlywood and latewood or zones of growth.
2. Hard wooden parts which occur in cross-sections and which presumably contribute towards its strength, can also be traced in longitudinal cuts in the form of ridges.
3. It is assumed that tree species build up different mechanical systems which can be varied during wood formation as the need arises.

Liquid/liquid extraction: Applications and choice of solvent . The significance of liquid/liquid extraction has been steadily increasing in recent years as more and more stringent demands are made on the purity, availability, and environmental safety of chemical products. The use and success of this separation process are critically dependent upon the choice of the right extraction agent. Whereas solvent choice was previously mainly empirical, it is now possible to establish the suitability of a given solvent with the aid of molecular-thermodynamic data. This is demonstrated for the extraction of aromatic compounds. The article closes with an account of the formation and stability of emulsions.

High-purity monosilane for the electronics industry – Synthesis, purification, characterization. Monosilane is used in the electronics industry in the production of integrated circuits and in the manufacture of amorphous silicon devices such as solar cells, photocopier drums, and flat TV screens. The first German production unit for high purity monosilane gas which came on stream in 1987 is presented. The gas produced in a molten salt process is purified to highest quality and analyzed.     

Untersuchung des einflusses molekularer parameter auf morphologie und eigenschaften von polyethylenen niedriger dichte

Based on the example of PE-LD grades and on model substances obtained by preparative fractionation (fractions in the molecular weight range M?_w = 1.2 ? 390·10⁴ g/mol), comprehensive investigations regarding the problems of structure/properties have been carried out. The correlations of M?_w with 15 physical and application technological perameters have been investigated taking into account the reaction mechanism during the manufacturing of PE-LD in the tubular and agitated autoclave reactor, resulting in the formation of so-called primary structure perameters M?_n, M?_w, molar mass distribution, short chain branching and long chain branching. For the interpretation of the results, among other factors, also the morphological conditions have been taken into consideration, which in connection with the molecular parameters reveal — for specific M?_w-ranges — strong changes and saturation ranges, resp., for the physical and application technological properties.
