The friction in tribo-systems that contain viscoelastic materials, such as elastomers, is relevant for a large number of applications. Examples include tyres, hoses, transmission and conveyor belts. To quantify the friction in these applications, one must first understand the contact behaviour of such viscoelastic materials, both in static and in dynamic situations. This work discusses an experimental study into the change of the contact area with the sliding velocity and relates the change in contact area with the mechanical properties of the elastomer. The results show that for a tribo-system containing an elastomer, there is a threshold velocity, above which the size of the contact area significantly reduces.  相似文献

There exist many ideas and assumptions about the development and meaning of modularity in biological and technical neural systems. We empirically study the evolution of connectionist models in the context of modular problems. For this purpose, we define quantitative measures for the degree of modularity and monitor them during evolutionary processes under different constraints. It turns out that the modularity of the problem is reflected by the architecture of adapted systems, although learning can counterbalance some imperfection of the architecture. The demand for fast learning systems increases the selective pressure towards modularity.  相似文献

A discrete Laplace‐Beltrami operator is called perfect if it possesses all the important properties of its smooth counterpart. It is known which triangle meshes admit perfect Laplace operators and how to fix any other mesh by changing the combinatorics. We extend the characterization of meshes that admit perfect Laplacians to general polygon meshes. More importantly, we provide an algorithm that computes a perfect Laplace operator for any polygon mesh without changing the combinatorics, although, possibly changing the embedding. We evaluate this algorithm and demonstrate it at applications.  相似文献

Environmental conditions and the interplay of cognitive and affective processes both exert influences on bidding behavior. This paper brings the above together, considering how the (external) auction environment determines the impact of (internal) cognitive and affective processes on bidding behavior, assessed in comparison to the optimal bid. Two aspects of the auction environment were considered, namely auction dynamics (low: first-price sealed-bid auction, high: Dutch auction) and value uncertainty (low, high). In a laboratory experiment, we assess bidders’ cognitive workload and emotional arousal through physiological measurements. We find that higher auction dynamics increase the impact of emotional arousal on bid deviations, but not that of cognitive workload. Higher value uncertainty, conversely, increases the impact of cognitive workload on bid deviations, but not that of emotional arousal. Taken together, the auction environment is a critical factor in understanding the nature of the underlying decision process and its impact on bids.  相似文献

Distributed video coding (DVC) constitutes an original coding framework to meet the stringent requirements imposed by uplink-oriented and low-power mobile video applications. The quality of the side information available to the decoder and the efficiency of the employed channel codes are primary factors determining the success of a DVC system. This contribution introduces two novel techniques for probabilistic motion compensation in order to generate side information at the Wyner-Ziv decoder. The employed DVC scheme uses a base layer, serving as a hash to facilitate overlapped block motion estimation at the decoder side. On top of the base layer, a supplementary Wyner-Ziv layer is coded in the DCT domain. Both proposed probabilistic motion compensation techniques are driven by the actual correlation channel statistics and reuse information contained in the hash. Experimental results report significant rate savings caused by the novel side information generation methods compared to previous techniques. Moreover, the compression performance of the presented DVC architecture, featuring the proposed side-information generation techniques, delivers state-of-the-art compression performance.  相似文献

Based on the analysis of “real” Second Life meetings data, in educational and professional settings, our objective is to understand the actual uses of this kind of Virtual World and more particularly, the interactive frames constructed in SL meetings and their interrelation with uses of communication media. The originality of our analytical framework stems from the combination of two perspectives: a third view perspective based on analyses of observational data and a first view perspective based on users’ reports on their experience in SL. Our results highlight: boundaries between serious and recreational registers; avatar’s expression and attribution of feelings to the person “behind”; spatial positioning as indicators and constructors of roles and engagement; management of communication fluidity and joint focus; narrowing of communication media used for task focus content; emerging mediation role for management of fractured exchanges.  相似文献

Dual-color fluorescence correlation spectroscopy is an interesting method to quantify protein interaction in living cells. But, when performing these experiments, one must compensate for a known spectral bleed through artifact that corrupts cross-correlation data. In this article, problems with crosstalk were overcome with an approach based on fluorescence lifetime correlation spectroscopy (FLCS). We show that FLCS applied to dual-color EGFP and mCherry cross-correlation allows the determination of protein-protein interactions in living cells without the need of spectral bleed through calibration. The methodology was validated by using EGFP-mCherry tandem in comparison with coexpressed EGFP and mCherry in live cell. The dual-color FLCS experimental procedure where the different laser intensities do not have to be controlled during experiment is really very helpful to study quantitatively protein interactions in live sample.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of this experiment was to gain a greater understanding of the utilization of working memory when interacting with a speech-enabled interactive voice response (IVR) system. BACKGROUND: A widely promoted guideline advises limiting IVR menus to five or fewer items because of constraints of the human memory system, commonly citing Miller's (1956) paper. The authors argue that Miller's paper does not, in fact, support this guideline. Furthermore, applying modern theories of working memory leads to the opposite conclusion--that reducing menu length by creating a deeper structure is actually more demanding of users' working memories and leads to poorer performance and satisfaction. METHOD: Participants took a working memory capacity test and then attempted to complete a series of e-mail tasks using one of two IVR designs (functionally equivalent, but one with a broad menu structure and the other with a deep structure). RESULTS: Users of the broad-structure IVR performed better and were more satisfied than users of the deep-structure IVR. Furthermore, this effect was more pronounced for those with low working memory capacity. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that creating a deeper structure is more demanding of working memory resource than the alternative of longer, shallower menus. APPLICATION: This experiment has important practical implications for all systems with auditory menus (particularly IVRs) because it provides empirical evidence refuting a widely promoted design practice.  相似文献

This paper examines how reflectance spectrometry used in the laboratory to estimate clay and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) soil contents can be applied to field and airborne measurements for soil property mapping. A continuum removal (CR) technique quantifying specific absorption features of clay (2206 nm) and CaCO3 (2341 nm) was applied to laboratory, field and airborne HYMAP reflectance measurements collected in 2003 (33 sites) and 2005 (19 sites) over bare soil sites of a few meters within the La Peyne Valley area, southern France. Nine intermediate stages from the laboratory up to HYMAP sensor measurements were considered for separately evaluating the possible degradation of estimation performances when going across scales and sensors, e.g. radiometric calibration, spectral resolution, spatial variability, illumination conditions, and surface status including roughness, soil moisture and presence and nature of pebbles.Significant relationships were observed between clay and CaCO3 contents and CR values computed respectively at 2206 nm and 2341 nm from reflectance measurements at the laboratory level with an ASD spectrophotometer up to the HYMAP spectro-imaging sensor. Performances of clay and CaCO3 estimations decreased from the laboratory to airborne scales. The main factors inducing uncertainties in the estimates were radiometric and wavelength calibration uncertainties of the HYMAP sensor as well as possible residual atmospheric effects.  相似文献

Recovering articulated shape and motion, especially human body motion, from video is a challenging problem with a wide range of applications in medical study, sport analysis and animation, etc. Previous work on articulated motion recovery generally requires prior knowledge of the kinematic chain and usually does not concern the recovery of the articulated shape. The non-rigidity of some articulated part, e.g. human body motion with nonrigid facial motion, is completely ignored. We propose a factorization-based approach to recover the shape, motion and kinematic chain of an articulated object with nonrigid parts altogether directly from video sequences under a unified framework. The proposed approach is based on our modeling of the articulated non-rigid motion as a set of intersecting motion subspaces. A motion subspace is the linear subspace of the trajectories of an object. It can model a rigid or non-rigid motion. The intersection of two motion subspaces of linked parts models the motion of an articulated joint or axis. Our approach consists of algorithms for motion segmentation, kinematic chain building, and shape recovery. It handles outliers and can be automated. We test our approach through synthetic and real experiments and demonstrate how to recover articulated structure with non-rigid parts via a single-view camera without prior knowledge of its kinematic chain.  相似文献
