This essay examines how students of African descent at a predominantly black college on the East Coast digitally perform their ethnic identities and rhetorics in a freshman composition course. The essay begins by showing how multiple uses of signifying frame students’ Blackboard discussions where they use a type of trickster motif to enact their agreements, disagreements, challenges, and questions, very much akin to Flava Flav's initial cultural role as part of the Rap/activist group, Public Enemy. Students’ online writing groups are then examined by focusing on one particular group, the “Black Long Distance Writers,” whose title signifies and signals the work of the African American writer and activist, John Oliver Killens, most notably, his seminal 1973 essay, “Wanted: Some Black Long Distance Runners.” The understandings of these “Black Long Distance Writers” bear the most powerful definition of literacy and computer-based writing instruction because their framework is not contingent upon making digitally divided minorities more technologically advanced and better at one type of English, its culture of power, or its academic discourses. Instead, these students experience rhetoric and writing as a way to alter the ways that knowledge is constructed for them and about them, “revocabularizing” the academy and its technologies. Such freshman writers are re-envisioned in this kind of cyberspace as constructors of and co-participants in black intellectual and rhetorical traditions … now AfroDigitized.  相似文献

A simple batch vacuum evaporation process for the treatment of several oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions is reported. The experiments were carried out with waste emulsions from an industrial copper rolling process and with model emulsions prepared in the laboratory. No detailed information on the formulation of the industrial waste O/W emulsions was available. Several model emulsions were formulated using the same base oil (an 85–15% (w/w) mixture of a synthetic poly-α-olefin and a trimethylol propane trioleate ester, respectively) and one of the three following surfactants: Brij-76 (polyethylene glycol octadecyl ether, non-ionic), CTAB (hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, cationic), and Oleth-10 (glycolic acid ethoxylate oleyl ether, anionic). Experimental results show a strong influence of operating conditions, such as pressure or bath temperature, on the evaporation performance. As a general trend, the higher the values of these parameters, the higher the pollutant content in the obtained aqueous effluent. The presence of surfactants increase the evaporation rate, especially at low operating vacuum pressures, the solubility of oil molecules in water and the evaporation temperature of model O/W emulsions. Furthermore, COD reductions higher than 99.5% for the treated waste O/W emulsions were achieved.  相似文献

In transparent optical networks, the optical signal accumulates the effects of all physical impairments present along the path it traverses. The conventional selection of signal paths based on e.g. shortest path routing without considering the signal quality and its association with the physical impairments does not always provide the optimum solution in terms of network performance such as blocking and resource utilization. This paper proposes an impairment constraint based routing algorithm to achieve an optimal combination of physical and networking performance taking into account all physical linear impairments including noise, chromatic and polarization mode dispersion, crosstalk and filter concatenation effects in an integrated approach. The performance of a typical metropolitan area network is examined and the improvement achieved when using the proposed approach compared to the conventional shortest path routing is demonstrated.  相似文献

Evaluation of Real-Time Operation Rules in Reservoir Systems Operation   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Reservoir operation rules are logical or mathematical equations that take into account system variables to calculate water release from a reservoir based on inflow and storage volume values. In fact, previous experiences of the system are used to balance reservoir system parameters in each operational period. Commonly, reservoir operation rules have been considered to be linear decision rules (LDRs) and constant coefficients developed by using various optimization procedures. This paper addresses the application of real-time operation rules on a reservoir system whose purpose is to supply total downstream demand. Those rules include standard operation policy (SOP), stochastic dynamic programming (SDP), LDR, and nonlinear decision rule (NLDR) with various orders of inflow and reservoir storage volume. Also, a multi-attribute decision method, elimination and choice expressing reality (ELECTRE)-I, with a combination of indices, objective functions, and reservoir performance criteria (reliability, resiliency, and vulnerability) are used to rank the aforementioned rules. The ranking method employs two combinations of indices: (1) performance criteria and (2) objective function and performance criteria by using the same weights for all criteria. Results show that the NLDR gives an appropriate rule for real-time operation. Moreover, NLDR validation is presented by testing predefined curves for dry, normal, and wet years.  相似文献

Canal section design with minimum cost, which can be considered as an objective function, involves minimization of total costs per unit length of the canal, including direct costs of per cubic meter earthworks and per meter canal lining and indirect costs of water losses through canal seepage and evaporation. Since the costs (both direct and indirect) are associated with the canal geometry and dimensions, it is possible to lower them by optimization of the mentioned objective function. For this purpose, some constraints were subjected and considered to solve the problem. Flow discharge, as the main constraint, was considered in addition to the minimum permissible velocity and Froude’s number, as subsidiary constraints. MATLAB programming software was used to demonstrate and run the optimization algorithm. The results finally were illustrated in forms of dimensionless graphs, which simplify the optimum design of canal dimensions with minimum cost per meter length. Comparing the results with other similar studies, however show the importance and role of earthworks and lining costs, as well as including the subsidiary constraints in the optimization process.  相似文献

A strategy to evaluate the effective radius (r eff) as a function of aerosol retrievals is provided in this work. This methodology is based on the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol products, using the 0.66 and 0.87 µm bands. These data have been studied from February 2000 to December 2005 in a grid situated at Subtropical North‐east Atlantic region. To reduce the number of MODIS useful variables a Factorial Analysis by Principal Components has been applied, decreasing the aerosol parameters from 18 to five. With these parameters, backscattering ratios and asymmetry factors at 0.66 and 0.87 µm besides the Ångström parameter, a lineal multivariate analysis technique has been applied to find the combination of variables that better evaluate the r eff. The standard error for the predicted value of r eff is ±0.09 µm. The expression obtained here has the advantage that it can be applied to other remote sensors like AVHRR/NOAA, HRV/SPOT, TM/LANDSAT, and so on, with long time series.  相似文献
