This research makes an investigation into the etching mechanism of atmospheric plasma conditions on the surface of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. Two types of untreated PET films (S/200 and S/500) were exposed to plasma for 0 to 5.0 min in 30‐s increments. The first set of each film type was treated in helium plasma, while the second was treated in oxygenated‐helium plasma. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize pre‐ and post‐exposure films. Weight changes and the degree of solubility were also determined. Based on peak area results, the percent crystallinity of PET S/200 increased by an average of 4.57% (helium treated) and 13.56% (oxygenated‐helium treated), while the S/500 showed only a small increase. There was no significant change in the melting or crystallization temperatures of either film type, indicating a decrease in amorphous content versus an increase in crystalline material. Weight loss analysis supports this theory. Solubility testing revealed a continual decrease in swelling as exposure time was increased. A model was developed to predict the change in the degree of solubility for polyphase surfaces considering the etching rate per phase. In this paper we explore differences in use of the so-called ‘logical’ elements of language such as quantifiers and conditionals, and use this to explain differences in performance in reasoning tasks across subject groups with different educational backgrounds. It is argued that quantified sentences are difficult natural bases for reasoning, and hence more prone to elicit variation in reasoning behaviour, because they are chiefly used with a pre-determined domain in everyday speech. By contrast, it is argued that conditional sentences form natural premises because of the function they serve in everyday speech. Implications of this for the role of logic in modelling human reasoning behaviour are briefly considered.  相似文献

Embedded wireless sensors are important components of mobile distributed computing networks, and one of the target applications areas is health care. The preservation of mobility for senior citizens is one of the key issues in maintaining an independent lifestyle. Thus health technologies inside a car can contribute both to safety issues (supervision of driver fitness) as well as healthcare issues by monitoring vitals signs imperceptibly. In this paper, three embedded measurement techniques for non-contact monitoring of vital signals have been investigated. Specifically, capacitive electrocardiogram (cECG) monitoring, mechanical movement analysis (ballistocardiogram, BCG) using piezo-foils and inductive impedance monitoring were examined regarding their potential for integration into car seats. All three sensing techniques omit the need for electroconductive contact to the human body, but require defined mechanical boundary conditions (stable distances or, in the case of BCG, frictional connection). The physical principles of operation, the specific boundary conditions regarding automotive integration and the results during wireless operation in a running car are presented. All three sensors were equipped with local intelligence by incorporating a microcontroller. To eliminate the need for additional cabling, a wireless Bluetooth communication module was added and used to transmit data to a measurement PC. Finally, preliminary results obtained during test drives on German city roads and highways are discussed.  相似文献

Relying on SIDE theory, this 2 × 2 experimental design tested the effects of adherence to organizational norms and interpersonal familiarity in e‐mail messages from both superior and subordinate perspectives. Results reveal that using norm‐congruent e‐mail messages account for over 50% of the variance in both superior and subordinate attitudes toward the message and between 30% and 56% of the variance in perceptions of source credibility. Data from the superiors indicate that norm congruent e‐mail messages account for 14.4% of the variance in message compliance. Results from subordinates reveal an interaction effect that is consistent with SIDE‐based predictions. Subordinates believe superiors are most likely to comply with e‐mail requests from unfamiliar subordinates that are crafted in a manner congruent with organizational norms.  相似文献

This paper reports on an aspect of the EC funded Argunaut project which researched and developed awareness tools for moderators of online dialogues. In this study we report on an investigation into the nature of creative thinking in online dialogues and whether or not this creative thinking can be coded for and recognized automatically such that moderators can be alerted when creative thinking is occurring or when it has not occurred after a period of time. We outline a dialogic theory of creativity, as the emergence of new perspectives from the interplay of voices, and the testing of this theory using a range of methods including a coding scheme which combined coding for creative thinking with more established codes for critical thinking, artificial intelligence pattern-matching techniques to see if our codes could be read automatically from maps and ‘key event recall’ interviews to explore the experience of participants. Our findings are that: (1) the emergence of new perspectives in a graphical dialogue map can be recognized by our coding scheme supported by a machine pattern-matching algorithm in a way that can be used to provide awareness indicators for moderators; (2) that the trigger events leading to the emergence of new perspectives in the online dialogues studied were most commonly disagreements and (3) the spatial representation of messages in a graphically mediated synchronous dialogue environment such as Digalo may offer more affordance for creativity than the much more common scrolling text chat environments. All these findings support the usefulness of our new account of creativity in online dialogues based on dialogic theory and demonstrate that this account can be operationalised through machine coding in a way that can be turned into alerts for moderators.  相似文献

Implementation of a rule-based transformation engine consists of several tasks with various abstraction levels. We present a new tool called mtom for the efficient implementation of rule-based transformations. This engine should help to bridge the gap between rewriting implementations and practical applications. It aims at implementing well-identified parts of complex applications where the use of rewriting is natural or crucial. These parts are specified using rewrite rules and integrated with the rest of the application, which is kept in a classical imperative language such as C, C++ or Java. Our tool, which can be viewed as a Yacc-like pre-processor, does not depend on a given term representation, rather it accepts implementation of terms (or term like data-types) of yet existing applications and it permits to define and execute rewrite rules upon those types. From our experiences, this system is well-suited for industrial use as well as for implementations of rule-based languages. The paper introduces several features supported by mtom.  相似文献

Topographs of Corning 7059 glass, developed by 7Kv, 70A Ar+ irradiation from a hollow anode ion gun were investigated. Two forms of surface topography were observed: lens-shaped cavities and waves. These are discussed in terms of measured sputtering yield against incidence angle relation or beam divergence. Practical applications in specimen preparation for transmission electron microscopy and glass homogeneity testing are suggested.  相似文献

Managing for social and environmental justice in water allocation is a necessary yet challenging goal. Often, what can appear as a just or equitable outcome for a specific location or group of stakeholders can also result in injustices at other locations or for other stakeholders. This paper describes a conceptual framework, The Cycles and Spirals of Justice, that helps make sense of the relationship between justice and injustice in the context of water-allocation decision making by explicitly utilizing a landscape-ecology understanding of scale and levels. The framework is illustrated using a case study from the Murray-Darling Basin in Australia and describes how justice and injustice are part of a cycling continuum of “justice for whom” and how this plays out in a multi-level system where the problem of scale can surface.  相似文献

The nucleation and growth of radiation-induced Cu-rich clusters have proved an important topic in the study of microstructural and chemical evolution responsible for property changes in pressure vessel steels subjected to neutron irradiation. Small Cu clusters can act as precipitate precursors and contribute to the hardening of the material by impeding dislocation glide. Reliable Cu diffusion coefficients provide critical input to Monte Carlo and rate theory approaches to study the kinetics of diffusion and clustering that lead to the formation of such Cu-rich features. In this paper we report the results of a molecular dynamics study of Cu solute-atom diffusion in a Fe–0.9at%Cu alloy, using high-temperatures and high-vacancy concentrations to hasten the convergence of the calculation. We find a value of 0.61 eV for the migration energy of Cu in the b.c.c Fe matrix, in good agreement with available experimental results. The main diffusion mechanisms under the conditions simulated are identified and discussed, and the effect of vacancy and solute clustering on Cu migration is assessed. In addition, a rigorous computation of the solute enhancement factor, correlation factor and solute diffusivity is performed within the five-frequency theoretical framework and the harmonic approximation. The results obtained are compared with those yielded by the direct MD simulations and the observed differences discussed.  相似文献

We propose an alternative approach to generate languages by means of P systems: building up an appropriate representation for a string by means of a corresponding membrane structure and then generating the string by visiting the membrane structure according to a well-specified strategy. To this aim, we consider P systems with active membranes, allowing membrane creation or division or duplication and dissolution, where the output of a computation may be obtained either by visiting the tree associated with the membrane structure, or by following the traces of a specific object, called traveller, or sending out the objects. For each of these approaches, we provide characterizations of recursively enumerable languages based on P systems that use different sets of operations for modifying the membrane structure. Francesco Bernardini: He started his Ph.D. at the University of Sheffield in December 2002 after having previously got a master degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa in Italy. His research is dedicated to the study of theoretical aspects of membrane computing (P systems) and discrete models of biological systems based on P systems. Marian Gheorghe, Ph.D.: His main research interests are in computational models and their applications to software modelling and testing, formal specifications of agent based systems, software engineering. He was investigating computational power of various generative devices (regular, context-free, fully initial; grammar systems; L-systems and variants).
