The thermosensitive properties of the hydrogel poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) together with the good mechanical properties of lyocell fibres make a combination of the two to be thought of as a smart textile. In the present study the optimal values of various parameters that control the grafting process of pNIPAAm onto lyocell fibres were determined considering the influence of the interaction between them. The copolymerization of pNIPAAm hydrogel onto lyocell fibres was performed in aqueous acidic medium using cerium(IV) as initiator. An experimental design was planned in order to study the effect of the interactions between some variables that affect the kinetics of the graft copolymerization: the cerium(IV) initiator concentration, the N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer concentration and the liquor fibre‐to‐bath ratio. The results show that the interaction between the concentrations of NIPAAm and the initiator significantly affects the degree of grafting (DG), the optimum values being 1250 and 12.25 mmol L?1, respectively. In contrast, the liquor ratio parameter shows no significant interaction with the other two variables studied, meaning that it acts independently but showing a proportional relationship with respect to the DG obtained. In addition, the presence of pNIPAAm in the copolymer obtained was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectral analysis. Moreover, the water sorption capacity, depending on the temperature, of the lyocell/pNIPAAm copolymer was studied, with an increase being observed when the DG is higher than 60% and also increasing with the temperature.© 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

We report on operant conditioning and artificial neural network (ANN) simulations aimed at further elucidating mechanisms of black-capped chickadee chick-a-dee call note category perception. Specifically, we tested for differences in the speed of acquisition among different discrimination tasks and, in two selected discrimination groups, searched for evidence of peak shift. Earlier, unreported ANN data were instrumental in providing the motivation for the current set of studies with chickadees and are provided here. The ANNs revealed differences in the speed of learning among note-type discrimination groups that is related to the degree of perceptual similarity among the three note types tested (i.e., A, B, and C notes). In many respects, bird and network results were in agreement (i.e., in the observation of peak shift in the same group), but they also differed in important ways (i.e., all discrimination groups showed differences in speed of learning in simulations but not in chickadees). We suggest that the start, peak and end frequency of the chick-a portion of chick-a-dee call notes, which form a graded but overlapping continuum, may drive the peak shift observed. Mucin, a glycoprotein with viscoelastic properties, and silk fibroin, a protein excreted from silkworms with properties of thermal and mechanical resistance, have been probed as building blocks in the design of biomaterials. Aiming to evaluate the interaction and miscibility between mucin and fibroin, we synthesized silk fibroin and mucin (SF/MU) blends for biomedical applications. The morphological analysis of the SF/MU blends showed the presence of two phases, suggesting a partial miscibility between the polymers. The degradation temperature of the SF/MU blends increased with an increase in the silk fibroin content, indicating that silk fibroin contributed to the thermal stability of the blends. The glass transition temperature of the SF/MU blends lay between the values of the pure polymers. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results pointed out that the interaction between fibroin and mucin occurred between the amine group of silk fibroin and mucin carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The outcomes of this work provided essential information on the miscibility of the SF/MU blends. These findings will be critical for further studies with fibroin and mucin-based biomaterials, especially in mucoadhesive systems and wound healing applications.  相似文献

The authors gave 23- and 40-day-old rats doses of the dopamine D? antagonist PD 152255 and tested them on transport response intensity, vertical cling catalepsy duration, and dorsal immobility duration. Administration of PD 152255 resulted in dose-dependent increases in transport response intensity in 40-day-old rats but was without effect in 23-day-old rats. Administration of PD 152255 caused increases in dorsal immobility durations in both 23- and 40-day-old subjects. The drug was without effect on vertical cling catalepsy. Results are discussed with respect to the role of D? receptors in the transport response and the nature of D?-D? receptor interactions. We propose a generalized kinetic model for the peroxide initiated modification of polyethylene. It takes into account not only combination reactions but also transfer to polymer and scission. The model describes the length of the polymer chain and the concentration of vinyl groups simultaneously. Any number of vinyl groups per molecule is allowed. The resulting infinite system of mass balance equations is solved using a double moment technique. The model calculates number, weight and z-average molecular weights and the average concentration of vinyl groups as functions of time. The kinetic constants and the initiation efficiency were estimated through a nonlinear regression using experimental data. The relevance of each one of the reactions included in the mechanism was assessed. By means of the model we studied the influence of temperature and initial peroxide concentration on the modified polymer properties. It follows well the observed experimental trends and gives good estimates of both average molecular weights and average vinyl content, within experimental error.  相似文献

Orbital/agranular insular (ORB/AI) cortex has been implicated in traditional olfactory learning tasks and social behavior but its precise role in discriminating-learning social odors is not known. Female golden hamsters received aspiration lesions of ORB/AI or dorsomedial (DM) frontal cortex and were tested for their ability to (a) discriminate between odors of individual males in a habituation-discrimination task, (b) show preferences for male over female odors, and (c) scent-mark in response to male odors. Lesioned females readily discriminated between scents of individual males. Neither lesion altered female preferences for male odors. Females with DM lesions showed increased levels of scent marking to male odors, but those with ORB/AI cortex lesions did not differ from controls. Thus, ORB/AI cortex does not appear to be critical for discrimination of odors of individuals or sex or for scent-marking responses based on these discriminations. This note examines the effects of climate variability on natural-resources management in East Africa. The bimodal rainfall regime in much of East Africa brings rainy seasons from March to May and October to December with greater interannual variability from October to December. We discuss the impacts of rainfall extremes in 1961 and 1997 and explore three examples of natural-resources management in the context of rainfall variability: inland fisheries in East and southern Africa; fluctuations in the level of Lake Victoria; and lake-shore communities around Lake Kyoga in Uganda. The discussion reflects the complexity of linkages between climate, environment and society in the region and highlights implications for natural-resources management. These range from benefits due to improved seasonal rainfall forecasting to reduce the damage of extremes, to improved understanding of existing climate-society interactions to provide insights into the region's vulnerability and adaptive capacity in relation to future climate change.  相似文献

In this paper new primers, annealing to the ITS2 region, were used to obtain a PCR product that was subsequently subjected to Temperature Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (TGGE) analysis. The PCR-TGGE method performed was able to distinguish Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. paradoxus and distinguish between strains of S. cerevisiae. Direct analysis of S. cerevisiae and S. paradoxus ecology in musts were also performed.  相似文献

Salvia officinalis (common sage) is a plant with antidiabetic properties. A pilot trial (non-randomized crossover trial) with six healthy female volunteers (aged 40–50) was designed to evaluate the beneficial properties of sage tea consumption on blood glucose regulation, lipid profile and transaminase activity in humans. Effects of sage consumption on erythrocytes’ SOD and CAT activities and on Hsp70 expression in lymphocytes were also evaluated. Four weeks sage tea treatment had no effects on plasma glucose. An improvement in lipid profile was observed with lower plasma LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels as well as higher plasma HDL cholesterol levels during and two weeks after treatment. Sage tea also increased lymphocyte Hsp70 expression and erythrocyte SOD and CAT activities. No hepatotoxic effects or other adverse effects were observed.  相似文献
