High reliability planar-type GaInAs/InP heterostructure avalanchephotodiodes

High-temperature, long-term life tests of GaInAs/InP heterostructure avalanche photodiodes have been carried out to establish criteria for high reliability photodetectors in 1.55 μm-wavelength optical submarine cable systems. A failure rate of less than 0.2 FIT at 10°C was predicted for the first time with an activation energy of 0.7 eV     

Rathke's cleft cyst

Two cases of Rathke's cleft cyst which produced symptoms of compression of the optic chiasm are described. The first case has been followed for five years since the operation. No evidence of recurrence has been noticed. The prognosis after a partial removal of the cyst wall seems to be good with this lesion. In the second case, there was clinical and laboratory evidence of hypopituitarism and the CT scan revealed suggestive findings to differentiate the cyst from a pituitary adenoma.

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections are common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). These patients frequently seek care with fever accompanied by generalized systemic symptoms and undergo bone marrow biopsy. It is our practice to stain all bone marrow trephine biopsy specimens from patients infected with HIV for acid-fast bacilli (AFB). We evaluated this practice by comparing the sensitivity and turnaround time for detection of MAC by biopsy specimen staining, bone marrow aspirate culture, and blood culture. Bone marrow trephine biopsy specimens with corresponding bone marrow aspirate and blood cultures from 86 HIV-positive patients were reviewed. Of the 86 patients, 30 had positive results for disseminated MAC infection, and all 30 of those patients had positive blood cultures. Bone marrow aspirate cultures identified 17 MAC-positive cases, and AFB staining of the biopsy specimen identified 9. The mean times to detection of MAC positivity were 1.1 days for AFB staining of the biopsy specimen, 19 days for bone marrow aspirate culture, and 16 days for blood culture. While AFB staining of biopsy specimens was the least sensitive of the detection methods, it was useful for the rapid diagnosis of disseminated MAC infection, allowing for prompt initiation of antimycobacterial therapy in one third of patients.     

Identification, genomic organization, and alternative splicing of KNSL3, a novel human gene encoding a kinesin-like protein

Despite increasing importance of molecular genetics, electromyography has preserved its place as a valuable tool in the diagnostic procedure of myopathies. Conventional electromyography allows the assessment of spontaneous activity, motor unit action potentials and interference patterns. In myopathies, fibrillations and positive sharp waves can be found in the majority of the cases. Motor unit action potentials are of short duration, low amplitude and may show increased polyphasia and number of satellite potentials. The interference pattern may be of low amplitude and compact already at submaximal contraction. Compared to conventional electromyography, automatic interference pattern analysis provides quantitative results and has the higher sensitivity and specificity. Normal conventional or automatic electromyography does not exclude a myopathy. For diagnostic purposes, electromyography will be followed by muscle biopsy and DNA analysis in most of the cases.     

H2O-tolerant monolithic catalysts for preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide in the presence of hydrogen

Pt–Fe/mordenite (4 wt% Pt–0.5 wt% Fe) powder catalysts were wash-coated onto ceramic straight-channel monoliths by using silica- and/or alumina-sol as a binder, and were evaluated for the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (PROX) in a hydrogen-rich gas. In a synthetic reformate gas (1% CO, 1% O₂, 5% H₂O, 20% CO₂, and balance H₂), the CO concentration was reduced to less than 20 ppm at temperatures ranging from 100 to 130 °C. After a certain period of the PROX reaction, condensation of H₂O in the pores of the mordenite-support occurred over the monolithic catalyst, which was wash-coated with alumina-sol, in the lower temperature range (100–120 °C), resulting in a rapid increase in CO concentration. The monolithic catalyst wash-coated with silica-sol, however, showed an excellent tolerance against H₂O condensation and offered a stable catalytic performance, maintaining a CO concentration of ca. 20 ppm for 200 h. The H₂O-tolerant characteristic was attributed to the relatively small adsorption amount of H₂O over the silica-modified monolithic catalyst.
