Thermal energy storage (TES) with phase change materials (PCMs) presents some advantages when shape-stabilization is performed with ceramic aerogels. These low-density and ultra-porous materials guarantee high energy density and can be easily regenerated through simple pyrolysis while accounting for moderate mechanical properties. However, the small pore size that typically characterizes these sorbents can hinder the crystallization of PCMs, slightly reducing the energy density of the stabilized compound. In this work, we present the use of polymer-derived mesoporous SiC and SiOC aerogels for the stabilization of polyethylene glycol and a fatty alcohol (PureTemp 23), having a melting temperature of 17 and 23°C, respectively. Their TES performances point out maximum thermal efficiency values of around 80%. These performances are discussed accounting for the results of thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and leaking tests. 相似文献

Engineered polylactic acid (PLA) nanoparticles synthesized from oligo(lactic acid) macromonomers have been studied over the last decades for controlled drug delivery. These macromonomers are typically produced via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the cyclic dimer lactide, initiated by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). This reaction route, despite leading to well-defined macromonomers, relies on the production of lactide from lactic acid, which burdens the ROP overall cost for more than 30%. In this work, we report the synthesis of PLA-based macromonomers by direct polycondensation of lactic acid in the presence of HEMA as a valuable alternative to ROP. In particular, we compare the two processes side by side, focusing on the production of three HEMA-LAn macromonomers, with n = 2, 4, and 6. Detailed kinetic models are developed for both reaction systems, and the corresponding parameters are estimated by fitting the experimental data. Through these models, the reaction kinetics as well as the time evolution of the entire chain length distributions of the products from polycondensation and ROP could be reliably predicted. This way, we demonstrated that polycondensation is a valuable alternative to ROP only for macromonomers with an average chain length of up to 4 and that ROP remains the main route to longer chains, when a strict control over the chain length distribution is required. 相似文献

Porous polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are outperforming materials when low-density and thermal inertia are required. In this frame, thermal insulating foams such as silicon carbide (SiC) ones possess intriguing requisites for aerospace applications, but their thermal conductivity is affected by gas phase heat transfer and, in the high temperature region, by radiative mechanisms. Owing to the versatility of the PDC route, we present a synthesis pathway to embed PDC SiC aerogels within the open cells of a SiC foam, thus sensibly decreasing the thermal conductivity at 1000°C from 0.371 W·m−1K−1 to 0.243 W·m−1K−1. In this way, it was possible to couple the mechanical properties of the foam with the insulating ability of the aerogels. The presented synthesis was optimized by selecting, among acetone, n-hexane, and cyclohexane, the proper solvent for the gelation step of the aerogel formation to obtain a proper mesoporous colloidal structure that, after ceramization at 1000°C, presents a specific surface area of 193 m2·g−1. The so-obtained ceramic composites present a lowest density of 0.18 g·cm−3, a porosity of 90% and a compressive strength of 0.76 MPa. 相似文献

By carrying out olive oil extraction experiments with three olive varieties (Dritta, Coratina, and Leccino), a new processing cytolase enzyme aid was tested. The oils, obtained with the enzyme adjuvant upon extraction, were characterized (with respect to reference oils) by: (i) relatively higher content of natural antioxidants (free and linked phenols, ortho-diphenols, tocopherols), trans-2-hexenal, total aromatic substances, chlorophyllic pigments, and steroid hydrocarbons; (ii) slightly lower content of aliphatic alcohols, triterpene alcohols, triterpene dialcohols, β-sitosterol, and total sterols; (iii) slightly higher values of integral color index, resistance to autoxidation, and global quality indices; (iv) lower values of carotenoid color index, alcoholic index and some qualitative ratios, such as trans-2-hexenal/hexanal, trans-2-hexenal/total aroma, campesterol/stigmasterol; and (v) a higher sensory score. Hence, they exhibited better overall qualitative characteristics. The enzyme adjuvant, in addition, led to higher oil extraction outputs. 相似文献

To evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress and glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity and intraerythrocytic reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) ratio were measured in 10 non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients and 10 healthy subjects before and after the intravenous administration of GSH. In particular, after baseline insulin sensitivity was assessed by a 2-hour euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp, either glutathione (1.35 g x m2 x min(-1)) or placebo (saline) were infused over a period of 1 hour. The same protocol was repeated at a 1-week interval, in cross-over, according to a randomized, single-blind design. In healthy subjects, baseline intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio (P < .0005) and total glucose uptake (P < .005) were significantly higher than in NIDDM patients. In the same subjects, GSH infusion significantly increased total glucose uptake (from 37.1 +/- 6.7 micromol kg(-1) x min(-1) to 39.5 +/- 7.7 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1), P < .05), whereas saline infusion was completely ineffective. In addition, the mean intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio significantly increased after GSH infusion (from 21.0 +/- 0.9 to 24.7 +/- 1.3, P < .05). Similar findings were found in diabetic patients, in whom GSH infusion significantly increased both total glucose uptake (from 25.3 +/- 9.0 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1) to 31.4 +/- 10.0 micromol x kg(-1) x min(-1), P < .001) and intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio (from 14.8 +/- 4.1 to 21.7 +/- 6.7, P < .01). Pooling diabetic patients and controls, significant correlations were found between intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio and total glucose uptake (r = .425, P < .05), as well as between increments of the same variables after GSH infusion (r = .518, P < .05). In conclusion, our data support the hypothesis that abnormal intracellular GSH redox status plays an important role in reducing insulin sensitivity in NIDDM patients. Accordingly, intravenous GSH infusion significantly increased both intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio and total glucose uptake in the same patients. 相似文献

Presented is a novel framework for performing flexible computational design studies at preliminary design stage. It incorporates a workflow management device (WMD) and a number of advanced numerical treatments, including multi-objective optimization, sensitivity analysis and uncertainty management with emphasis on design robustness. The WMD enables the designer to build, understand, manipulate and share complex processes and studies. Results obtained after applying the WMD on various test cases, showed a significant reduction of the iterations required for the convergence of the computational system. The tests results also demonstrated the capabilities of the advanced treatments as follows: The novel procedure for global multi-objective optimization has the unique ability to generate well-distributed Pareto points on both local and global Pareto fronts simultaneously. The global sensitivity analysis procedure is able to identify input variables whose range of variation does not have significant effect on the objectives and constraints. It was demonstrated that fixing such variables can greatly reduce the computational time while retaining a satisfactory quality of the resulting Pareto front. The novel derivative-free method for uncertainty propagation, which was proposed for enabling multi-objective robust optimization, delivers a higher accuracy compared to the one based on function linearization, without altering significantly the cost of the single optimization step. The work demonstrated for the first time that such capabilities can be used in a coordinated way to enhance the efficiency of the computational process and the effectiveness of the decision making at preliminary design stage. 相似文献

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by relapsing eczematous injuries and severe pruritus. In the last few years, the AD prevalence has been increasing, reaching 20% in children and 10% in adults in high-income countries. Recently, the potential role of probiotics in AD prevention has generated considerable interest. As many clinical studies show, the gut microbiota is able to modulate systemic inflammatory and immune responses influencing the development of sensitization and allergy. Probiotics are used increasingly against AD. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the probiotics mediated anti-allergic effect remain unclear and there is controversy about their efficacy. In this narrative review, we examine the actual evidence on the effect of probiotic supplementation for AD prevention in the pediatric population, discussing also the potential biological mechanisms of action in this regard. 相似文献

Several studies on the genetics of longevity have been reviewed in this paper. The results show that, despite efforts and new technologies, only two genes, APOE and FOXO3A, involved in the protection of cardiovascular diseases, have been shown to be associated with longevity in nearly all studies. This happens because the genetic determinants of longevity are dynamic and depend on the environmental history of a given population. In fact, population-specific genes are thought to play a greater role in the attainment of longevity than those shared between different populations. Hence, it is not surprising that GWAS replicated associations of common variants with longevity have been few, if any, as these studies pool together different populations. An alternative way might be the study of long-life families. This type of approach is proving to be an ideal resource for uncovering protective alleles and associated biological signatures for healthy aging phenotypes and exceptional longevity. 相似文献

Natural killer (NK) cells play a role in defence against viral infections by killing infected cells or by producing cytokines and interacting with adaptive immune cells. Killer immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) regulate the activation of NK cells through their interaction with human leucocyte antigens (HLA). Ninety-six Sicilian patients positive to Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV) and ninety-two Sicilian patients positive to SARS-CoV-2 were genotyped for KIRs and their HLA ligands. We also included fifty-six Sicilian patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) already recruited in our previous study. The aim of this study was to compare the distribution of KIR–HLA genes/groups of these three different infected populations with healthy Sicilian donors from the literature. We showed that the inhibitory KIR3DL1 gene and the KIR3DL1/HLA-B Bw4 pairing were more prevalent in individual CHB. At the same time, the frequency of HLA-C2 was increased in CHB compared to other groups. In contrast, the HLA-C1 ligand seems to have no contribution to CHB progression whereas it was significantly higher in COVID-19 and HIV-positive than healthy controls. These results suggest that specific KIR–HLA combinations can predict the outcome/susceptibility of these viral infections and allows to plan successful customized therapeutic strategies. 相似文献
