Digital Detection of Single Virus Particles by Multi-Spot,Label-Free Imaging Biosensor on Anti-Reflective Glass

Rapid detection of whole virus particles in biological or environmental samples represents an unmet need for the containment of infectious diseases. Here, an optical device enabling the enumeration of single virion particles binding on antibody or aptamers immobilized on a surface with anti-reflective coating is described. In this regime, nanoparticles adhering to the sensor surface provide localized contributions to the reflected field that become detectable because of their mixing with the interfering waves in the reflection direction. Thus, these settings are exploited to realize a scan-free, label-free, micro-array-type digital assay on a disposable cartridge, in which the virion counting takes place in wide field-of-view imaging. With this approach we could quantify, by enumeration, different variants of SARS-CoV-2 virions interacting with antibodies and aptamers immobilized on different spots. For all tested variants, the aptamers showed larger affinity but lower specificity relative to the antibodies. It is found that the combination of different probes on the same surface enables increasing specificity of detection and dynamic range.

本文的主要目的是探究生产性场所在城市肌理形成过程中所扮演的不同形式角色，以突出城市更新中的战略要素。同时，本文还旨在探寻城市分析方法与在工业拆除区的更新改造项目中所运用的设计方法之间的联系。从以城市形态学方法到以感知的方式，本文通过六种城市分析方法来研究生产区。该研究的结果可视为一个指导性的理论框架，能够加深学界对城市形态“衍进性”这一特征及其在形态学问题上的认识。从这个角度来看，工业拆迁区的更新过程可视为源于历史上的痕迹和类型的一个暂时形态—预示着未来人口集中的城市形态。     

Analysis of the WAP protocol over SMS in GSM networks

This paper, based on the PALIO Project within the fifth Research Framework of the European Commission, deals with an information tourist service accessible through mobile phones by means of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). We have considered a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) network where the WAP traffic is transported by the Short Message Service (SMS) on a logical channel that also conveys signaling messages. Suitable models have been considered for both WAP browsing traffic and signaling traffic. We have proposed a theoretical approach to evaluate the mean delay to browse a WAP page taking into account the impact of the signaling load. Analytical predictions have been validated through comparisons with simulation results. Moreover, we have also considered a specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirement in terms of the maximum deck transmission delay that is guaranteed in 95 per cent of cases. Consequently, it has been possible to evaluate the number of WAP users that can be supported per cell. The study carried out in this paper permits to prove the feasibility for the envisaged mobile service based on WAP and it also allows dimensioning WAP pages so that each user experiences reasonable browsing delays. Near-infrared spectroscopy: A possible routine analysis to detect the use of frozen curds in the production of Buffalo Mozzarella cheese

Mozzarella di Bufala Campana is a pasta filata cheese with a Protected Designation of Origin whose specifications require the use of fresh milk, forbidding the use of frozen curds. The goal is to develop a routine analysis to identify frozen curd presence. The Buffalo Mozzarella samples were analysed by the near-infrared analytical technique, and the spectral data were processed through an artificial neural network. The results make it possible to identify the use of frozen curd in samples of Buffalo Mozzarella for up to 9 days of storage. The model reported very high accuracy either in training (0.5% of bad prediction) or in tests (6.8% of bad prediction).     

Boronic Acid Moieties Stabilize Adhesion of Microalgal Biofilms on Glassy Substrates: A Chemical Tool for Environmental Applications

Photosynthetic organisms such as diatoms microalgae provide innovative routes to eco-friendly technologies for environmental pollution bioremediation. Living diatoms are capable to incorporate in vivo a wide variety of chemical species dispersed in seawater, thus being promising candidates for eco-friendly removal of toxic contaminants. However, their exploitation requires immobilization methods that allow to confine microalgae during water treatment. Here we demonstrate that a biofilm of Phaeodactylum tricornutum diatom cells grown on the surface of a glassy substrate bearing boronic acid protruding moieties is stably anchored to the substrate resisting mechanical stress and it is suitable for removal of up to 80 % metal ions (As, Cr, Cu, Zn, Sn, Pb, Sb) in a model polluted water sample. Control experiments also suggest that stabilization of the biofilm adhesion occurs by interaction of boronic acid surface groups of the substrate with the hydroxyl groups of diatoms extracellular polysaccharides.
