Loud noise is an environmental stressor of everyday life, which affects different organs and apparati, in particular the cardiovascular system. We have already reported that noise exposure produces significant alterations in the rat myocardium, consisting of mitochondrial damage, which is evident as lysis of the cristae and dilution of the matrix. Since there are high similarities between mouse and human species, the aim of our study was to investigate the effects of acute noise exposure on the mouse heart. We found that noise exposure affects mouse myocardium at similar subcellular sites to those already described in the rat; nonetheless, quantitative analysis of the percentage of altered mitochondria in both species disclosed a clear difference between mouse and rat myocardium, which strongly suggests a different sensitivity to noise stimulus. We hypothesize that the species differences on the extent of myocardial alterations here observed might be due to the zonal pattern of cardiac noradrenergic receptors, which should be the final effectors for noise-induced myocardial changes.  相似文献

Network survivability requires the provisioning of backup resources in order to protect active traffic against any failure scenario. Backup resources, however, can remain unused most of the time while the network is not in failure condition, inducing high power consumption wastage, if fully powered on. In this paper, we highlight the power consumption wastage of the additional resources for survivability in IP/multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) over dense wavelength division multiplexing multi-layer optical networks. We assume MPLS protection switching as the failure recovery mechanism in the network, a solution interesting for current network operators to ensure fast recovery as well as fine-grained recovery treatment per label switched path. Next, we quantitatively show how elastic optical technologies can effectively reduce such a power consumption by dynamically adjusting the data rate of the transponders to the carried amount of traffic.  相似文献

A common pattern of apoptotic death is DNA cleavage, initially producing large fragments (50 kbp), followed by the production of nucleosomic/oligonucleosomic fragments. Nevertheless, apoptosis without DNA fragmentation, at least of the nucleosomic type, has been reported. To investigate the spatial relationship between DNA cleavage and chromatin condensation, we applied the TUNEL technique to the ultrastructural analysis of apoptotic cells. A modified method, utilizing a gold‐conjugated antidigoxigenin antibody, was carried out on U937 versus Molt‐4 cells, both exposed to UVB radiation or staurosporine treatment. Gold particle density in the different domains of apoptotic cells was evaluated by a four‐way ANOVA test. Gold labelling was more strongly localised in condensed chromatin than in the diffuse chromatin. U937 cells, which evidenced in vitro oligonucleosomic fragmentation after both UVB and staurosporine treatments, revealed a significantly higher gold particle density, when compared with Molt‐4, which did not show, on the other hand, oligonucleosomic cleavage even in the presence of ≤50 kbp cleavage. Thus, a correlation between DNA fragment sizes and gold particle density appears. TUNEL applied to electron microscopy is an effective approach to study the relationship between apoptotic chromatin condensation and DNA cleavage. The synthesis of a fully aromatic oligoamide by low temperature interfacial polycondensation between terephthaloyl chloride and 1,4-phenylenediamine is reported. The reaction product was characterized with respect to its physical properties and chemical structure by infrared, X-rays, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and mass spectroscopic techniques. Elemental and thermal analysis, as well as viscosimetric and titrimetric methods were applied to evaluate the average molecular weight of the oligomer, whose chain length consists mainly of 3 to 4 monomeric units.  相似文献

Nature-based coastal protection is increasingly recognised as a potentially sustainable and cost-effective solution to reduce coastal flood risk. It uses coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests to create resilient designs for coastal flood protection. However, to use mangroves effectively as a nature-based measure for flood risk reduction, we must understand the biophysical processes that govern risk reduction capacity through mangrove ecosystem size and structure. In this perspective, we evaluate the current state of knowledge on local physical drivers and ecological processes that determine mangrove functioning as part of a nature-based flood defence. We show that the forest properties that comprise coastal flood protection are well-known, but models cannot yet pinpoint how spatial heterogeneity of the forest structure affects the capacity for wave or surge attenuation. Overall, there is relatively good understanding of the ecological processes that drive forest structure and size, but there is a lack of knowledge on how daily bed-level dynamics link to long-term biogeomorphic forest dynamics, and on the role of combined stressors influencing forest retreat. Integrating simulation models of forest structure under changing physical (e.g. due to sea-level change) and ecological drivers with hydrodynamic attenuation models will allow for better projections of long-term natural coastal protection.  相似文献

Spherical silica supported Hyflon® catalysts (SSHC) were developed to produce ethers from glycerol by etherification reaction with isobutene. SSHC allowed to obtain yields to di- and tri-ethers, suitable as additives or components for diesel fuels, higher than that obtained with A-15 commercial catalyst, and a concentration of undesired mono-ether (not soluble in diesel) lower than 3 wt%. The novel catalysts investigated were found stable and easily reusable; their low acid site density prevented the occurrence of oligomerization reaction accounting for di-isobutene formation. Engine tests performed using a blend containing 10 vol% of glycerol ethers mixture confirmed the positive role of additives in reducing emissions of particulates and unburned hydrocarbons with significant improvement of diesel combustion efficiency.  相似文献

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation acts as a strong apoptotic trigger in many cell types, in tumor and normal cells. Several studies have demonstrated that UVB-induced cell death occurs through the generation of reactive oxygen species. The consequent oxidative stress includes the impairment of cellular antioxidants, the induction of DNA damage and the occurrence of apoptosis. In this review, we investigated UVB apoptotic action in various cell models by using ultrastructural, molecular and cytofluorimetric techniques. Myeloid leukemia HL-60, T-lymphoblastoid Molt-4 and myelomonocytic U937 human cells, generally affected by apoptotic stimuli, were studied. Human chondrocytes and C2C12 skeletal muscle cells, known to be more resistant to damage, were also considered. All of them, when exposed to UVB radiation, revealed a number of characteristic apoptotic markers. Membrane blebbing, cytoplasm shrinkage and chromatin condensation were detected by means of electron microscopy. DNA cleavage, investigated by using agarose gel electrophoresis and TUNEL reaction, was observed in suspended cells. Differently, in chondrocytes and in skeletal muscle cells, oligonucleosomic DNA fragmentation did not appear, even if a certain TUNEL positivity was detected. These findings demonstrate that UVB radiation appears to be an ideal tool to study the apoptotic behavior.  相似文献
