Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is a human carcinogen. However, the exact mechanism of carcinogenesis remains unclear. VCM may be metabolized by cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Thus workers with inherited variant metabolic enzyme activities may have an altered risk of genotoxicity. This study was designed to investigate which risk factors might affect sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequency in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) workers. Study subjects were 44 male workers from three PVC factories. Questionnaires were administered to obtain detailed histories of cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, occupations, and medications. SCE frequency in peripheral lymphocytes was determined using a standardized method, and CYP2E1, GSTM1, GSTT1 and ALDH2 genotypes were identified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Analysis revealed that smoking status and exposure to VCM were significantly associated with increased SCE frequency. The presence of ALDH2 1-2/2-2 genotypes was also significantly associated with an elevation of SCE frequency (9. 5 vs. 8.1, p<0.01). However, CYP2E1, GSTM1 or GSTT1 genotypes were not significantly associated with SCE frequency. When various genotypes were considered together, combination of CYP2E1 c1c2/c2c2 with ALDH2 1-2/2-2 showed an additive effect on SCE frequency. Similar results were also found for the combination of smoking with CYP2E1, or smoking with ALDH2. Cloud‐point extraction (CPE) was used with lipophilic chelating agent to extract uranium(VI) from aqueous solutions. The methodology used is based on the formation of metal complexes soluble in a micellar phase of a non‐ionic surfactant, Triton X‐114. The metal ions complexes are then extracted into the surfactant‐rich phase at a temperature above the cloud‐point temperature. The influence of surfactant concentration on extraction efficiency was studied and the advantage of adding 8‐hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) as lipophilic chelating agent was evidenced. High extraction efficiency was observed, indicating the feasibility of extracting U(VI) using CPE. This study describes a four‐step process—(1) extraction, (2) thermo‐induced phase splitting, (3) back‐extraction and (4) second phase splitting—for the recovery of uranium from water. In our conditions, the extraction yield is quantitative and the concentration factor obtained is superior to 100. Single crystals of so-called “FeYb2S4 spinel” were prepared and their crystal structure was solved. The cubic cell, space group Fd3m, has a lattice constant . From X-rays determinations, its content is (Fe0.76 Yb2.16 S4) × 8. Iron is divalent and ytterbium is trivalent. Ytterbium is in two series of octahedral sites, which are partially filled : 0.96 Yb and 0.04 ? on every 16d position, 0.12 Yb and 0.88 ? on every 16c position. The killer system of Kluveromyces lactis is associated with two linear DNA plasmids, pGKL1 and pGKL2. The killer toxin and the immunity determinant are coded for by pGKL1. Mutations which we have named KEX1. The KEX1 gene of K. lactis has been cloned by complementation of kex1 mutations by using a recombinant plasmid pool containing the entire Kluyveromyces lactis genome, on a multicopy plasmid KEp6, which contains the Saccharomyces cerevisiae URA3 gene as a marker. Genetic analyses of strains carrying a distrupted kex1 allele demonstrated that the cloned DNA corresponded to the KEX1 gene. The cloned KEX1 gene of K. lactis has low but significant sequence homology with the KEX2 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In vivo complementation of the kex1 mutations of K. lactis by the KEX2 gene of S. cerevisiae, and complementation of the kex2 mutations of S. Cerevisiae by the KEX1 gene of K. lactis, demonstrated that KEX1 of K. Lactis is functionally related to the KEX2 gene of S. cerevisiae. Flotsam from the seagrass Syringodium filiforme were assayed for inositols, a class of cyclitol well known for their biological activities and applications. Free l-chiro-inositol (LCI), a very rare natural occurring cyclitol, was isolated from aqueous extracts of dried detrital leaves. The structure was unambiguously established by NMR and polarimetry. The LCI content of the crude aqueous extracts prepared from different batches of Syringodium flotsam was measured by quantitative 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The high concentrations found (2.3–2.5% dry weight) offer promise for the exploitation of Syringodium flotsam as a new cheap source for nutraceutical or therapeutic applications, considering the demonstrated hypoglycaemic action of LCI.
Industrial relevance
In the West the demand for herbal drugs has reached a new high in recent years. As the demand for alternative medicine has grown, so have the harvesting and collection pressures for numerous ecologies that produce the medicinal plants of interest. There is evidence in literature that chiro-inositol can be used in managing diabetes. Flotsam of the seagrass Syringodium filiforme, which accumulate in huge quantities on the beaches of the Caribbean Sea, could become a new and interesting source to obtain extracts rich in chiro-inositol. Heretofore, there has been no market for Syringodium flotsam, so that the cost of the same is simply that of harvesting. Recovery of inositol from this waste material could offer very interesting economic possibilities to tropical coastal areas suffering from increased rates of unemployment. 相似文献16.

The aim was to select potentially probiotic lactobacilli from 88 strains isolated from unpasteurized milk and cheese products, and to incorporate these bacteria in a viable state into a soft cheese, without changing its quality. The survival of these bacteria was assessed in acidic and bile conditions, after freezing at -80 degrees C. Four strains from unpasteurized Camembert--two Lactobacillus plantarum strains and two Lb. paracasei/casei strains--were identified and typed by PCR and PFGE and were found to display potentially probiotic characteristics in addition to resistance to low pH and bile. These characteristics were resistance to lysozyme, adhesion to CACO-2 cells, antimicrobial effects against common foodborne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, innocuity following the ingestion of high doses by mice and appropriate antibiotic susceptibility profiles. The potential of Lb. plantarum strain UCMA 3037 for incorporation into a soft cheese (Pont-l'Eveque registered designation of origin (RDO)) was investigated. This strain grew well and survived in sufficient numbers (more than 10(7) cfu/g throughout the shelf-life of the product) in the cheese. This strain did not change the quality score of the product until the best before date (75 days after manufacture). Thus, unpasteurized Camembert is a natural source of potentially probiotic lactobacilli, which could be used as an additive in the development of potentially probiotic soft cheeses.
