Polymeric phosphonium salts as a novel class of cationic biocides. VII. Synthesis and antibacterial activity of polymeric phosphonium salts and their model compounds containing long alkyl chains

Various polymeric phosphonium salts containing long alkyl chains (C₁₀? C₁₈) and their corresponding model compounds were prepared, which possess the same hydrophobic structure as that of the common disinfectants (quaternary ammonium salts), and their antibacterial activities were evaluated by means of the viable cell counting method against Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative). The polymer with the decyl group exhibited a higher activity than that of the corresponding model compound, particularly against the Gram-positive strain. Furthermore, antibacterial activity of the polymers was found to decrease as the chain length increased. In contrast with the polymers, the antibacterial activity of the corresponding model compounds increased as hydrophobicity of the substituents increased. The antibacterial activity was strongly dependent on the structure, particularly on the length of the alkyl chain. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Phase separation behavior and morphology development of phenolic resin/PMMA/hexamethylenetetrarnine blends

Summary In order to obtain materials with nanopores which will be applicable for many fields, the structures of the cured blends of phenolic resin (PhN), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and curing agent were studied. After PMMA was extracted from cured blends, the structures of cured phenolic resins were observed with SEM. As a results, it was found that nanosized continuous pore structures were formed in extremely wide composition region if curing temperature was high.     

Liquid crystalline side-chain polysiloxanes containing mesogenic groups attached by esterification

Summary Liquid crystalline side-chain polysiloxanes were prepared without metal complex catalyst. Mesogenic groups such as cholesteryl, 4-cyano-4-biphenyl and 4-methoxy-4-biphenyl group were introduced into polysiloxane by esterification and from DSC measurements they were compatible with other liquid crystalline polysiloxanes reported previously.     

Microcrack generation and its healing in the oxide scale formed on Fe-Cr alloys

Fe -base alloys containing 5, 10, and 20 wt. % Cr were oxidized in a stream of O₂ at 750 and 900°C up to 264 hr. A sulfur decoration method was applied to detect the cracks generated in the scale during oxidation. This method revealed frequent crack generation and its healing in the scale. In the case of low-Cr alloys, the cracks are filled up with newly formed Fe-rich oxide but may be regenerated during further oxidation. Cracks are generated in the scale on an Fe-20Cr alloy also, although this alloy is not so severely attacked because of rapid healing.     

A new refining process for iron oxide using iron ore and its application to hard ferrites

Kawasaki Steel Corporation and Kawatetsu Mining Co., Ltd. have developed a new refining process to extract iron oxide from iron ore to meet the increase in demand for iron oxide for high- grade hard ferrites. This article discusses the quality of iron oxides and the characteristics of the hard ferrite magnets produced from them.     

Repeatedly foldable AMOLED display

In this study, a 5.9‐inch foldable active‐matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display was developed. A folding test was performed repeatedly. The display survived the folding test (100,000 folds) with a curvature radius of 2 mm. To protect an organic light emitting diode (OLED) against moisture, inorganic passivation layers are provided on the upper and lower sides of the flexible display. Using our transfer technology, high density passivation layers can be obtained. The measured water vapor transmission rate of the layer is 7 × 10^?6 g/m²?day or less, which improves OLED reliability. With these techniques, we have developed a book‐type display, which is repeatedly foldable like a book, and a tri‐fold display including a display area, which is foldable in three.     

Rapid consolidation of powdered materials by induction hot pressing

A rapid hot press system in which the heat is supplied by RF induction to rapidly consolidate thermoelectric materials is described. Use of RF induction heating enables rapid heating and consolidation of powdered materials over a wide temperature range. Such rapid consolidation in nanomaterials is typically performed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) which can be much more expensive. Details of the system design, instrumentation, and performance using a thermoelectric material as an example are reported. The Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, and thermal diffusivity of thermoelectric PbTe material pressed at an optimized temperature and time in this system are shown to agree with material consolidated under typical consolidation parameters.     

HD/SHD still image database system and image distribution in broadband network applications

This paper focuses on a practical design for an efficient scalable image database and retrieval system over broadband networks. It describes a concrete solution for the implementation of HD/SHD (high-definition/super-high-definition) still image retrieval services which can be used in different applications. The structure of the complete system, consisting of a directory server, an image server, and MMI (man-machine interface) devices, has been presented, detailing each element and their corresponding functions. The desired HD/SHD image is displayed on the HD-PDP (plasma display panel) with the aid of image matching. The proposed system generates image index automatically, eliminating special skills in preparing index images and crucially reducing the processing time (from 35 min to 110 s), and does not use keywords. It has been also shown that these indices can be used for quite accurate image retrieval, i.e., the system provides high precision rates (currently up to 98%) to the user, eliminating troubles encountered in the image retrieval operations due to limitation on the user’s age, culture, knowledge, and languages.The broadband IP networks currently have a number of issues from the viewpoint of practical system operations, and so the requirements and issues needed for the networks are discussed from the viewpoint of in-service performance, differentiation among different types of services, secure connections, and so on, focusing on handling of HD/SHD still images.

The effect of small dose of topiroxostat on serum uric acid in patients receiving hemodialysis

Introduction : Topiroxostat, a recently developed xanthine oxidase inhibitor, is expected to have fewer adverse effects than allopurinol because it has different mechanism of action from alloprinol. However, its dosage, usage and safety have not been established in patients with impaired renal function or those undergoing dialysis at the development since no studies was conducted in these patients. Methods : Cross over clinical trial using 3 months of allopurinol and topiroxostat on 27 maintain Japanese HD patients were carried out. The effects on oxidative stress status of both drugs were also evaluated by measuring oxidation reduction potential. Findings : Twenty‐five of twenty‐seven patients completed study. The mean serum uric acid levels in the topiroxostat‐treated arm was significantly lower than it in the allopurinol‐treated arm time‐dependently (P < 0.0001). Corrected oxidative stress ratio defined as biological antioxidant potential/diacron reactive oxygen metabolites was significantly increased in topiroxostat‐arm (*P = 0.0035), but not in allopurinol‐arm (P = 0.1429). No significant difference was seen in diacron reactive oxygen metabolites, biological antioxidant potential, static oxidation‐reduction potential, and capacity oxidation‐reduction potential between pre and post treatment of both drugs. Discussion : It is suggested that a low dose of topiroxostat decreased serum uric acid sufficiently to maintain it below 7.0 mg/dL in patients receiving hemodialysis.
