Many floodplains contain high concentrations of sediment associated contaminants that might be subjected to large changes in terms of mobility, transformation and bioavailability. Therefore, this study describes 1) changes in the redox conditions and the mobility of metals in artificially uncovered polluted floodplain sediments, 2) metal uptake by organisms and 3) colonization, succession and functioning of benthic algae on these sediments. Flooding caused long term changes in redox potential (Eh) profiles. In top layers strong gradients in redox potential established quickly, while in deeper layers changes occurred more gradually. The availability of copper as measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thinfilms (DGT) showed a consistent relationship with fluctuations in Eh. However, this relationship was restricted to deeper layers in the sediment. Within 1 week high amounts of total copper were immobilized. Differences in total copper concentrations between polluted and clean sediments became only partially apparent when comparing the available copper fraction (DGT-Cu). Introduced Tubifex shows only marginal differences in levels of accumulated Cu. Colonization, growth and succession of algal communities on polluted sediments was not impaired, most likely due to low bioavailability. It is concluded that changing environmental conditions, such as flooding, can result in stable chemical conditions with low a availability of metals and hence in a diminution of actual ecological risks.  相似文献

The ability to control the conductance of single molecules will have a major impact in nanoscale electronics. Azobenzene, a molecule that changes conformation as a result of a trans/cis transition when exposed to radiation, could form the basis of a light-driven molecular switch. It is therefore crucial to clarify the electrical transport characteristics of this molecule. Here, we investigate, theoretically, charge transport in a system in which a single azobenzene molecule is attached to two carbon nanotubes. In clear contrast to gold electrodes, the nanotubes can act as true nanoscale electrodes and we show that the low-energy conduction properties of the junction may be dramatically modified by changing the topology of the contacts between the nanotubes and the molecules, and/or the chirality of the nanotubes (that is, zigzag or armchair). We propose experiments to demonstrate controlled electrical switching with nanotube electrodes.  相似文献

Spouses in maritally happy nonaggressive (H; n?=?21), distressed nonaggressive (DNA; n?=?16), and distressed aggressive (DA; n?=?20) marriages were interviewed about their perceptions of their spouse as controlling. Four areas of spousal control were assessed: involvement in decision making, relationships with family and friends, freedom to plan activities independently, and sense of competence and self-respect. Overall, as expected, spouses in happy marriages reported feeling less controlled than spouses in the 2 distressed groups. Few gender differences were obtained, with the exception that wives in aggressive marriages were more likely to report that their husbands controlled their sense of competence and self-respect. Differences between the DA and DNA groups depended on the specific area of control. Wives in the aggressive couples were significantly more likely than their husbands to state that their spouse's aggression was an attempt to control them. Platelets in atherosclerosis, bypass stenosis, and restenosis have been extensively assessed. However, a sequential ultrastructural study of platelets in angiogenesis during the early phases of these lesions has received less attention. Our objective was the study of platelets in angiogenesis and vessel regression during intimal thickening (IT) formation, a precursor process of these occlusive vascular diseases. For this purpose, we used an experimental model of rat occluded arteries and procedures for ultrastructural observation. The results show (a) the absence of platelet adhesion in the de-endothelialized occluded arterial segment isolated from the circulation, (b) that intraarterial myriad platelets contributed from neovessels originated by sprouting angiogenesis from the periarterial microvasculature, (c) the association of platelets with blood components (fibrin, neutrophils, macrophages, and eosinophils) and non-polarized endothelial cells (ECs) forming aggregates (spheroids) in the arterial lumen, (d) the establishment of peg-and-socket junctions between platelets and polarized Ecs during intussusceptive angiogenesis originated from the EC aggregates, with the initial formation of IT, and (e) the aggregation of platelets in regressing neovessels (‘transitory paracrine organoid’) and IT increases. In conclusion, in sprouting and intussusceptive angiogenesis and vessel regression during IT formation, we contribute sequential ultrastructural findings on platelet behavior and relationships, which can be the basis for further studies using other procedures.  相似文献

The success of cell therapy for the treatment of myocardial infarction depends on finding novel approaches that can substantially implement the engraftment of the transplanted cells. In order to enhance cell engraftment, most studies have focused on the pretreatment of transplantable cells. Here we have considered an alternative approach that involves the preconditioning of infarcted heart tissue to reduce endogenous cell activity and thus provide an advantage to our exogenous cells. This treatment is routinely used in other tissues such as bone marrow and skeletal muscle to improve cell engraftment, but it has never been taken in cardiac tissue. To avoid long-term cardiotoxicity induced by full heart irradiation we developed a rat model of a catheter-based heart irradiation system to locally impact a delimited region of the infarcted cardiac tissue. As proof of concept, we transferred ZsGreen+ iPSCs in the infarcted heart, due to their ease of use and detection. We found a very significant increase in cell engraftment in preirradiated rats. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that preconditioning the infarcted cardiac tissue with local irradiation can substantially enhance cell engraftment.  相似文献

The effects of an osmotic dehydration process using sucrose and maltose solutions at 40 and 60 °Brix on microscopic features and some mechanical and thermal properties of guava tissue were studied. Also the addition of calcium lactate to the sugar solutions, aiming at preserving the structure of the processed fruits, was investigated. The guava texture (stress at failure) and the structure as observed by light microscopy were both evaluated, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to verify the interaction between calcium ions and cell wall pectin in the guava tissue. The calcium content of the differently treated samples was also related to microscopic features, mechanical and thermal properties of guavas. The osmotic process using sucrose and maltose solutions caused severe structural damage to the guava tissue, and this effect was intensified at higher sugar concentrations and by the use of sucrose solutions. The addition of calcium lactate promoted maintenance of the guava structure, showing turgid cells with well-defined cellular contours, resulting in an increase in hardness and indicating bonding between the Ca2+ and cell wall pectin, which was confirmed by the DSC experiments.  相似文献
