Selected processing methods, demonstrated to be effective at reducing Salmonella, were assessed to determine if spice and herb quality was affected. Black peppercorn, cumin seed, oregano, and onion powder were irradiated to a target dose of 8 kGy. Two additional processes were examined for whole black peppercorns and cumin seeds: ethylene oxide (EtO) fumigation and vacuum assisted‐steam (82.22 °C, 7.5 psia). Treated and untreated spices/herbs were compared (visual, odor) using sensory similarity testing protocols (α = 0.20; β = 0.05; proportion of discriminators: 20%) to determine if processing altered sensory quality. Analytical assessment of quality (color, water activity, and volatile chemistry) was completed. Irradiation did not alter visual or odor sensory quality of black peppercorn, cumin seed, or oregano but created differences in onion powder, which was lighter (higher L*) and more red (higher a*) in color, and resulted in nearly complete loss of measured volatile compounds. EtO processing did not create detectable odor or appearance differences in black peppercorn; however visual and odor sensory quality differences, supported by changes in color (higher b*; lower L*) and increased concentrations of most volatiles, were detected for cumin seeds. Steam processing of black peppercorn resulted in perceptible odor differences, supported by increased concentration of monoterpene volatiles and loss of all sesquiterpenes; only visual differences were noted for cumin seed. A series of dinuclear iron(III)I complexes supported by thioether‐triphenolate ligands have been prepared to attain highly Lewis acidic catalysts. In combination with tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) they are highly active catalysts in the synthesis of cyclic organic carbonates through the coupling of carbon dioxide to epoxides with the highest initial turnover frequencies reported to date for the conversion of propylene oxide to propylene carbonate for iron‐based catalysts (5200 h−1; 120 °C, 2 MPa, 1 h). In particular, these complexes are shown to be highly selective catalysts for the coupling of carbon dioxide to internal oxiranes affording the corresponding cyclic carbonates in good yield and with retention of the initial stereochemical configuration. A density functional theory (DFT) investigation provides a rational for the relative high activity found for these Fe(III) complexes, showing the fundamental role of the hemilabile sulfur atom in the ligand skeleton to promote reactivity. Notably, in spite of the dinuclear nature of the catalyst precursor only one metal center is involved in the catalytic cycle.

n‐type silicon wafer solar cells are receiving increasing attention for industrial application in recent years, such as the n‐type rear‐junction Passivated Emitter Rear Totally‐diffused (PERT) solar cells. One of the main challenges in fabricating the n‐PERT solar cells is the opening of the rear dielectric for localized contacts. In this work laser ablation is applied to locally ablate the rear dielectric. We investigate the laser damage to the emitter at the laser‐ablated regions using the emitter saturation current density, J0e,laser, extracted by two approaches. J0e,laser is observed to be injection dependent due to high J02 recombination caused by laser damage to the space charge region. High-rate electron transfer toward an anode in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has thus far not been described for bacteria-producing soluble redox mediators. To studythe mechanism of electron transfer, we used a MFC isolate, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain KRP1. Bacterial electron transfer toward the MFC anode was enabled through pyocyanin and phenazine-1-carboxamide. The presence of the anode stimulated pyocyanin production. Mutant strains, deficient in the synthesis of pyocyanin and phenazine-1-carboxamide, were unable to achieve substantial electron transfer and reached only 5% of the wild type's power output. Upon pyocyanin addition, the power output was restored to 50%. Pyocyanin was not only used by P. aeruginosa to improve electron transfer but as well enhanced electron transfer by other bacterial species. The finding that one bacterium can produce electron shuttles, which can be used also by other bacteria, to enhance electron-transfer rate and growth, has not been shown before. These findings have considerable implications with respect to the power output attainable in MFCs. 相似文献

Waterbird feces (mainly mallard Anas platyrhynchos and coot Fulica atra) were collected from four wetlands in Southern Spain in the field or during capture (n = 558 and n = 59, respectively) to study lead (Pb) shot ingestion. Lead and aluminum (Al) concentrations along with Pb isotope signatures were used to identify sources of Pb exposure. The profile and concentrations of porphyrins and biliverdin in feces were used as biomarkers of toxicological effects. Feces with Pb concentrations ≥ 34 μg/g d.w. showed higher Pb/Al ratios, together with lower (206)Pb/(207)Pb and (208)Pb/(207)Pb ratios, and higher (208)Pb/(206)Pb ratios, than feces with <34 μg/g d.w. Isotope signatures and Pb/Al ratios together indicated that Pb shot ingestion was the likely cause of the high Pb levels in some samples, whereas sediment ingestion was linked to lower/background levels. Coproporphyrin I and protoporphyrin IX were also higher in feces with Pb ≥ 34 μg/g d.w., indicating measurable disruption in heme synthesis. Noninvasive fecal sampling permits study of the degree and source of Pb exposure and physiological effects, with low-effort and minimal disturbance to waterbirds. 相似文献

Ultrasensitive detection protocols not requiring polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-mediated target DNA amplification are expected to significantly improve our possibilities in several research and diagnostic applications for which minute cell quantities are available. For this reason we have tested a nanoparticle-enhanced surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRI) sensing strategy to detect point mutations in nonamplified genomic DNA. We have used genomic DNAs, not subject to costly, time-consuming, and prone to contamination PCR-based amplification procedures, obtained from both healthy individuals and homozygous or heterozygous patients affected by β-thalassemia, in order to demonstrate the specificity and the sensitivity of the described sensing strategy. The assay we describe is ultrasensitive and convenient. Attomolar concentrations of target genomic DNA are detected, DNAs from healthy individuals and homozygous or heterozygous patients affected by β-thalassemia are discriminated, and only simple manipulations of the genetic samples are required before the analysis. The proposed ultrasensitive detection of DNA point mutations involved in genomic disorders possibly represents an important advantage in several biomedical applications. 相似文献

The dynamic range of capillary electrophoresis analysis is ultimately limited by molecular shot noise at low concentrations and by concentration-induced band broadening at high concentrations. We report a system that approaches these fundamental limits. A laser-induced fluorescence detector is reported that employs a cascade of four fiber-optic beam splitters connected in series to generate a primary signal and four attenuated signals, each monitored by a single-photon counting avalanche photodiode. Appropriate scaling of the signals from the five photodiodes produces a linear optical calibration curve for 5-carboxyl-tetramethylrhodamine from the concentration detection limit of 1 pM to the upper limit of 1 mM. Mass detection limits are 120 yoctomoles (70 molecules) injected into the instrument. The very-wide dynamic range instrument was used to study the metabolic products of the fluorescently labeled glycosphingolipid tetramethylrhodamine labeled GM1 (GM1-TMR) produced by single cells isolated from the rat cerebellum. 相似文献
