The protective effect of phenolic compounds from an olive oil extract, and of olive oils with (extra-virgin) and without (refined)
phenolic components, on low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation was investigated. When added to isolated LDL, phenolics [0.025–0.3
mg/L caffeic acid equivalents (CAE)] increased the lag time of conjugated diene formation after copper-mediated LDL oxidation
in a concentration-dependent manner. Concentrations of phenolics greater than 20 mg/L inhibited formation of thiobarbituric-acid
reactive substances after AAPH-initiated LDL oxidation. LDL isolated from plasma after preincubation with phenolics (25–160
mg/L CAE) showed a concentration-dependent increase in the lag time of conjugated diene formation after copper-mediated LDL
oxidation. Refined olive oil (0 mg/L CAE) and extra-virgin olive oil (0.1 and 0.3 mg/L CAE) added to isolated LDL caused an
increase in the lag time of conjugated diene formation after copper-mediated LDL oxidation that was related to olive oil phenolic
content. Multiple regression analysis showed that phenolics were significantly associated with the increase in lag time after
adjustment for effects of other antioxidants; α-tocopherol also achieved a statistically significant effect. These results
indicate that olive oil phenolic compounds protect LDL against peroxyl radical-dependent and metal-induced oxidation in vitro and could associate with LDL after their incubation with plasma. Both types of olive oil protect LDL from oxidation. Olive

Effect of cooling rate and frequency on the calorimetric measurement of the glass transition 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The glass transition of thermoplastics of different polydispersity and thermosets of different network structure has been studied by conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature modulated DSC (TMDSC). The cooling rate dependence of the thermal glass transition temperature Tg measured by DSC, and the frequency dependence of the dynamic glass transition temperature T measured by TMDSC have been investigated. The relation between the cooling rate and the frequency necessary to achieve the same glass transition temperature has been quantified in terms of a logarithmic difference Δ=log10[|q|]−log10(ω), where |q| is the absolute value of the cooling rate in K s−1 and ω is the angular frequency in rad s−1 necessary to obtain Tg(q)=T(ω). The values of Δ obtained for various polymers at a modulation period of 120 s (frequency of 8.3 mHz) are between 0.14 and 0.81. These values agree reasonably well with the theoretical prediction [Hutchinson JM, Montserrat S. Thermochim Acta 2001;377:63 [6]] based on the model of Tool–Narayanaswamy–Moynihan with a distribution of relaxation times. Assessment of heavy metals remobilization by fractionation: comparison of leaching tests applied to roadside sediments 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The pollution emitted by traffic activities and road maintenance is an area of great interest as contaminants can be transported to roadside sediments and pose a risk to environmental and human health. In the presentwork, deposited pollution in roadside sediments has been assessed by sampling along a highly traveled highway in Barcelona and the surrounding area. The available amounts of the heavy metals was determined by applying different leaching tests and calculating the concentration enrichment ratio (CER) and the environmental concentration guideline values (ECG). To gain information on the heavy metals (HMs) fractionation, the sequential extraction scheme (SES), established by the Standard Measurement and Testing (SM&T), was implemented, and the results were compared with those obtained by single leaching tests. An anthropogenic enhancement of certain metals was observed after considering both the CER and ECG values. However, if only ECG values were considered, an overestimation of the anthropogenically enhanced pollutants was obtained due to disregarding geochemical and particle size variability. CER values provide a more realistic assessment by determining different levels of anthropogenic impact. Thus, CER values suggest a minimum anthropogenic apportion for metals such as Cd, Cr, and Ni, whereas different situations from significant to extreme anthropogenic contribution were observed for Zn, Pb, and Cu. These results have been complemented by other leaching tests that minimize the time-consuming environmental evaluation. In this study, HCI extraction produces suitable results for a quick screening since they correlate well with the corresponding SES: Cu(r2 = 0.798), Pb(r2 = 0.958) and Zn(r2 = 0.901). Mild extractants have been observed to be limited to highly polluted samples due to their low leaching power. The influence of inoculum populations and environmental factors on attachment of Salmonella Montevideo to the surface of tomatoes and tomatillos was evaluated. To study the effect of inoculum size, red, ripe tomatoes were spot-inoculated with bacterial suspensions (10(5) and 10(8) CFU/fruit) and stored at 22 degrees C under 100% relative humidity. The effects of temperature (12, 22, and 30 degrees C) and relative humidity (75, 85, and 97%) on attachment of the pathogen (10(7) CFU/fruit) to tomatoes (red and green) and ripe tomatillos were also evaluated. Inoculated fruits were stored for 90 min at all combinations of temperature and relative humidity, and after rinsing with water, the number of cells attached to the surface was determined. Salmonella Montevideo attached to the surface of tomatoes within 90 min. A direct correlation between the number of attached cells and the population in the inoculum was observed. The percentage of cells that attached immediately after inoculation was approximately 0.3% for the three test products. After storage for 90 min at various temperature and relative humidity conditions, the number of adhering cells ranged from 4.0 to 5.4 log CFU/fruit (1.2% of inoculum). Both the type of product and the temperature/relative humidity combination had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on attachment of Salmonella Montevideo to the surfaces of tomatoes and tomatillos. Scanning electron micrographs of the cuticles of inoculated washed tomatoes and tomatillos revealed typical skin cell patterns, and only a few randomly dispersed Salmonella Montevideo were observed. Deposition of Salmonella Montevideo on the surface of tomatoes and tomatillos could result in attachment and subsequent colonization under suitable conditions. 相似文献

A red Rioja wine was aged in barrels made of Spanish oak wood for 21 months. The evolutions of colour percentage intensity, families of phenolic compounds and low molecular weight phenolic compounds were studied in these wines and compared with those of the same wine aged in barrels made of French and American oak. The analysis of chromatic parameters and total anthocyanins indicates that the wines aged in Spanish and French oak wood barrels have similar chromatic characteristics, but are significantly different to those of wines aged in barrels made of American oak wood, indicating a different degree of modification of the colour. The ageing process also had an important influence on the low molecular weight polyphenols composition of wine. The evolution of these components allowed the production of wines with different characteristics, in relation to the type of wood used in barrel making process. On the other hand, Spanish oak wood can be considered suitable for barrel production for quality wines, since a wine aged in barrels made of Spanish oak wood showed similar and intermediate characteristics to those of the same wine aged in French and American oak woods. 相似文献

Anisakids are a group of widely distributed nematodes which have acquired high social relevance due to their involvement in foodborne infections caused by consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. A TaqMan®-LNA probe real-time assay targeting the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) was developed allowing the simultaneous detection of the most important anisakids species present in fish and seafood products.The determination of the detection limit in terms of ppm was 1 ppmFor the validation of method developed, twenty fish and cephalopod samples were experimentally contaminated with anisakid. It was checked that in cases in any anisakids species was present, it was detected because the Ct was always less than 35 and did not produce any case false negatives. The main novelty of this work lies in the fact that it can be applied to all kinds of processed products, including those undergoing intensive processes of transformation, as for instance canned foods. The proposed methodology is rapid, robust, highly sensitive and readily adaptable in routine molecular diagnostic laboratories, and can be employed as molecular screening method in order to assess the food security. 相似文献

The enzymatic activities of 147 samples of commercially produced Spanish polyfloral and monofloral honeys are reported. Important variations in invertase activity and peroxide accumulation were determined to obtain objective information related to honey quality. Variations from 4.04 (Robinia pseudoacacia) to 25.61 g sucrose hydrolysed per 100 g h−1 (SN) (Castanea sativa) and from 11.31 (Erica vagans) to 45.25 µg H2O2 g−1 h−1 (Hedysarum coronarium) were detected, with a range from 10.57 to 46.2 SN in polyfloral honeys. Honeys from Erica spp had different invertase activities—high for E cinerea (18.3 SN) and low for E vagans (8.36 SN). The different heating processes of honey have been evaluated to determine the best treatment for preserving invertase activity. The hydroxymethylfurfural content is not a sufficiently good indicator of the degree of deterioration of honey. Hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics of a three-phase airlift reactor were studied in a rectangular split-vessel reactor and using an air-seawater-marine sediment system. Experiments were conducted over a range of downcomer to riser cross-sectional area ratios (AD/AR = 0.65 to 1.0) for two-phase systems and for five sediment concentrations (5 to 25% w/v) using marine sediments. The influence of higher sediment concentrations (30 to 50% w/v) was examined for AD/AR = 1. The presence of fine sediment particles in the system had little effect on hydrodynamic and mass transfer parameters compared to the two-phase systems up to 25% loading, decreasing at higher loadings. The airlift reactor was found to meet the dissolved oxygen demand needed for a contaminated sediment treatment process. Axial distribution of the particles was uniform along the riser and the downcomer. Correlations were developed that described the hydrodynamic and mass transfer behaviour for all experimental conditions examined. 相似文献

Estimation of the semantic likeness between words is of great importance in many applications dealing with textual data such as natural language processing, knowledge acquisition and information retrieval. Semantic similarity measures exploit knowledge sources as the base to perform the estimations. In recent years, ontologies have grown in interest thanks to global initiatives such as the Semantic Web, offering an structured knowledge representation. Thanks to the possibilities that ontologies enable regarding semantic interpretation of terms many ontology-based similarity measures have been developed. According to the principle in which those measures base the similarity assessment and the way in which ontologies are exploited or complemented with other sources several families of measures can be identified. In this paper, we survey and classify most of the ontology-based approaches developed in order to evaluate their advantages and limitations and compare their expected performance both from theoretical and practical points of view. We also present a new ontology-based measure relying on the exploitation of taxonomical features. The evaluation and comparison of our approach’s results against those reported by related works under a common framework suggest that our measure provides a high accuracy without some of the limitations observed in other works. 相似文献
