A multi-grid method is one of the most powerful linear solvers for finite element electromagnetic field analysis. However,
as the discretized model has recently been enlarged, a solution process for a linear system arising on the coarsest level
tends to be problematic in a complete multi-grid solution process. Whereas a linear system on the coarsest level is generally
solved by a direct solver, we solve it here by means of an iterative solver to reduce the memory requirements. Since a conventional
preconditioning technique is not effective for such a linear system, we introduce preconditioning techniques based on Arnold,
Falk, and Winther’s and on Hiptmair’s smoothers. Numerical tests show that the newly installed preconditioning technique greatly

This study investigated the generation of oil drops using new symmetric and asymmetric through-hole-array devices made of
stainless steel. The through-hole-array devices were built by piling up six stainless-steel plates, each having circular micro-holes
with a diameter of 300 or 500 μm or micro-slots with a shorter line of 300 or 500 μm. Drops were generated by injecting a
dispersed phase (refined soybean oil) via the through-hole array into a compartment filled with a continuous phase (Milli-Q
water solution containing one of two emulsifiers). The drop detachment from symmetric and asymmetric through holes was observed
in real time and analyzed. Uniform oil drops with average diameters of 1.0–4.1 mm and coefficients of variation of typically
less than 6% were generated using symmetric and asymmetric through-hole-array devices. The resultant drop diameters for asymmetric
through-hole arrays were significantly smaller than those for symmetric through-hole arrays. This paper also discusses experimental
results regarding the effects of the microstructure, the dimensions of the through holes, and the type of emulsifier on drop

The authors recently proposed a promising technique for producing monodisperse emulsions using a straight-through microchannel
(MC) device composed of an array of microfabricated oblong holes. This research developed new straight-through MC devices
with tens of thousands of oblong channels of several microns in size on a silicon-on-insulator plate, and investigated the
emulsification characteristics using the microfabricated straight-through MC devices. Monodisperse oil-in-water (O/W) and
W/O emulsions with average droplet diameters of 4.4–9.8 μm and coefficients of variation of less than 6% were stably produced
using surface-treated straight-through MC devices that included uniformly sized oblong channels with equivalent diameters
of 1.7–5.4 μm. The droplet size of the resultant emulsions depended greatly on the size of the preceding oblong channels.
The emulsification process using the straight-through MC devices developed in this research had very high apparent energy
efficiencies of 47–60%, defined as (actual energy input applied to droplet generation/theoretical minimum energy input necessary
for making droplets) × 100. Straight-through MC devices with numerous oblong microfluidic channels also have great potential

Recent development of open-loop electric potential microscopy (OL-EPM) has enabled to measure local potential distribution at a solid/liquid interface. However, the operating environment of OL-EPM has been limited to a weak electrolyte solution (<1 mM). This has significantly limited its application range in biology and chemistry. To overcome this limitation, we have developed dual frequency (DF) mode OL-EPM. In the method, an ac bias voltage consisting of two frequency components at f(1) and f(2) is applied between a tip and sample. The local potential is calculated from the amplitudes of the f(1) and |f(1) - f(2)| components of the electrostatic force. In contrast to the conventional single frequency (SF) mode OL-EPM, the detection of the 2f(1) component is not required in DF mode. Thus, the maximum bias modulation frequency in DF mode is twice as high as that in SF mode. The high bias modulation frequency used in DF mode prevents the generation of electrochemical reactions and redistribution of ions and water, which enables to operate OL-EPM even in a strong electrolyte solution. In this study, we have performed potential measurements of nanoparticles on a graphite surface in 1 and 10 mM NaCl solution. The results demonstrate that DF mode OL-EPM allows measurements of local potential distribution in 10 mM electrolyte solution. 相似文献

Biological desulfurization using a bubble column reactor was investigated in a continuous biogas treatment. Rapid biogas circulation between the digester and the bubble column for biological desulfurization was used to stimulate the gas-liquid mass transfer of H(2)S. A positive correlation between the biogas circulation rate and H(2)S removal rate was observed. Moreover, the increase in the circulation rate stimulated the O(2) mass transfer, eventually translating into an increase in sulfate production from the oxidation of H(2)S. Throughout the continuous experiment, the reactor retained sufficient levels of sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. A comparison of the results of the continuous biogas treatment and batch tests suggests that the gas-liquid mass transfer rate of H(2)S was the rate-limiting step in the biological desulfurization in the reactor, indicating that the mass transfer efficiency of H(2)S needs to be improved to enhance the desulfurization performance. 相似文献

A neural oscillator with a double-chain structure is one of the central pattern generator models used to simulate and understand rhythmic movements in living organisms. However, it is difficult to reproduce desired rhythmic signals by tuning an enormous number of parameters of neural oscillators. In this study, we propose an automatic tuning method consisting of two parts. The first involves tuning rules for both the time constants and the amplitude of the oscillatory outputs based on theoretical analyses of the relationship between parameters and outputs of the neural oscillators. The second involves an evolutionary tuning method with a two-step genetic algorithm (GA), consisting of a global GA and a local GA, for tuning parameters such as neural connection weights that have no exact tuning rule. Using numerical experiments, we confirmed that the proposed tuning method could successfully tune all parameters and generate sinusoidal waves. The tuning performance of the proposed method was less affected by factors such as the number of excitatory oscillators or the desired outputs. Furthermore, the proposed method was applied to the parameter-tuning problem of some types of artificial and biological wave reproduction and yielded optimal parameter values that generated complex rhythmic signals in Caenorhabditis elegans without trial and error. 相似文献

Immersion ultrasonic probes for measurements and imaging at high temperature are presented. The probes consist of sol-gel-sprayed thick films as piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers (UTs) directly deposited onto steel buffer rods. They operate in pulse-echo mode at temperatures up to 500/spl deg/C. The operating ultrasonic frequency is between 5 MHz and 20 MHz, controlled by the film thickness. The ultrasonic thickness measurement of a steel plate with the probe fully immersed in molten zinc at 450/spl deg/C was demonstrated using ultrasonic plane waves. For imaging purposes, the probing end of the steel buffer rod was machined into a semispherical concave shape to form an ultrasonic lens and achieve high spatial resolution with focused ultrasound in liquids. Ultrasonic surface and subsurface imaging using a mechanical raster scan of the focused probe in silicone oil at 200/spl deg/C was also carried out. The breakdown of alumina rf windows is mostly caused by multipactor, as well as by material defects and contamination. Since multipator induces localized surface heating, leading to surface melting, it is necessary to observe secondary electron emission (SEE) coefficients of alumina ceramics under high temperature conditions. The SEE coefficients of commercial alumina ceramics and sapphire were measured by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with a single short-pulsed electron beam (100 pA, 1 ms) at room temperature and at 650degC. Additive materials used for sintering alumina, such as SiO 2 and MgO, were also investigated. Surface charging evaluations have also become important because the accumulated charges are discharged at the threshold Held, resulting in surface discharge. The surface charging evaluations were carried out by multi-pulse measurements with the injection of successive pulses on the sample. As a result, reductions in the SEE coefficients with temperature were confirmed, except for sapphire. The multi-pulse measurement results indicated that surface charging of the sapphire was higher than that of other samples. This may be one of the factors that causes sapphire not to be durable for rf window applications, compared with alumina ceramics. Since we presented our preliminary result (Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 486 (2002) 170) at SCINT2001, we have continued our efforts to increase the light yield (LY) of PbWO4 scintillators by extending different dopings with an aim to find a possibility of using PbWO4 successfully in Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Overall result obtained for single doping as well as double and tripple co-dopings are summarized, including decay characteristics and radiation hardness. The LY in non-doped PbWO4 crystals with a size of 10×10×(20–30) mm3 is 25–35 photolectrons/MeV (phe/MeV) corresponding to 3–4% of the LY in BGO, when measured with a bialkali photomultiplier during a gate of 1 μs. The maximum LY increased to 49 phe/MeV for single doping with Mo6+, 80 phe/MeV for double co-doping of Mo6++Sb5+, and 85 phe/MeV for tripple co-doping of Mo6++Cd2++Sb5+. The radiation hardness is larger than 105 Gy for each of the samples co-doped with Mo6++Sb5+ and Mo6++Cd2++Sb5+, while it is much poorer in PWO:Mo6+. In each of these co-doped samples, a medium-speed green emission in the microsecond range is created besides the fundamental fast (a few nanoseconds range) blue one, giving a peak at 500 nm in the radioluminescence spectrum similarly as in PWO:Mo6+. 相似文献
