Chemistry of the mandibular gland secretion of the Indian beePithitis smaragdula

The mandibular glands of the stem-nesting Indian beePithitis smaragdula contain a mixture of salicylaldehyde, citronellyl acetate, geranyl acetate, pentadecane, heptadecane, ethyl tetradecanoate, and ethyl hexadecanoate. Salicylaldehyde is reported for the first time from a hymenopterous source. The secretion, emitted when the bee is disturbed, is rubbed with the legs over the bee's body and the disturbing object. The reactivity of some of the components in combination with the bee's behavior make the glandular exudate an effective defensive secretion.     

Molybdenum-tungsten interdiffusion and the influence on potassium bubbles in tungsten lamp wire

The present article describes the effects of molybdenum contamination on the microstructure of lampgrade potassium-doped tungsten wire after exposure to temperatures above 2500 °C. Molybdenum is generally used as the mandrel material in the coiling of single and double coil lamp filaments. During high-temperature heat treatments used during filament manufacture, significant amounts of molybdenum can diffuse into the tungsten. In this study, tungsten-molybdenum diffusion couples were prepared and heat treated at temperatures of 2500 °C and above to generate molybdenum contamination of the tungsten. After dissolution of the molybdenum from the diffusion couple, additional high-temperature heat treatments of the tungsten were performed to simulate lamp burning; equiaxed grains and excessive potassium bubble growth were observed in the tungsten. Explanations for these microstructural changes are discussed. Electron beam microprobe data were also obtained to characterize tungsten-molybdenum interdiffusion, and a Boltzmann-Matano analysis was performed to evaluate the contribution of the concentration dependence of the interdiffusion coefficient to the measured diffusion profiles.     

In vivo dynamics of axon pathfinding in the Drosophilia CNS: a time-lapse study of an identified motorneuron

We developed a system for time-lapse observation of identified neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) of the Drosophila embryo. Using this system, we characterize the dynamics of filopodia and axon growth of the motorneuron RP2 as it navigates anteriorly through the CNS and then laterally along the intersegmental nerve (ISN) into the periphery. We find that both axonal extension and turning occur primarily through the process of filopodial dilation. In addition, we used the GAL4-UAS system to express the fusion protein Tau-GFP in a subset of neurons, allowing us to correlate RP2's patterns of growth with a subset of axons in its environment. In particular, we show that RP2's sharp lateral turn is coincident with the nascent ISN.     

Peptides that block hepatitis B virus assembly: analysis by cryomicroscopy, mutagenesis and transfection

Peptides selected to bind to hepatitis B virus (HBV) core protein block interaction with the long viral surface antigen (L-HBsAg) in vitro. High resolution electron cryomicroscopy showed that one such peptide binds at the tips of the spikes of the core protein shell. The peptides contain two basic residues; changing either of two acidic residues at the spike tip to an alanine greatly reduced the binding affinity. Transfection of hepatoma cells with a replication-competent HBV plasmid gave significantly reduced production of virus in the presence of peptide, in a dose-dependent manner. These experiments show that the interaction of L-HBsAg with core particles is critical for HBV assembly, and give proof of principle for its disruption in vivo by small molecules.     

The effect of carbon monoxide on haem-facilitated oxygen diffusion

From 1965-1975 in the orthopedical Univ. Clinic Balgrist, Zurich, there were 177 reoperations after total hip prostheses necessary. In 91 replacements the interval between first and second operation was an average of 4.1 years, in 67 prosthesis-removements 2.1 years. The follow-up showed a relationship between bacteriological culture taken before and during operation and clinical results. The decision to change or remove the prostheses should be made on the positive or negative bacteriological results.     

The possibilities for electron diffraction in biology

The techniques whereby an electron microscope may be used to observe the low angle electron diffraction pattern from crystallized macromolecules are described. A discussion is then presented of the advantages and disadvantages of the technique relative to X-ray diffraction, high resolution electron microscopy and optical diffraction or computer analysis of electron micrographs.     

Interferometric measurement of SELFOCregdielectric constant coefficients to sixth order

A simple and sensitive interferometric technique which yields accurate measurements of the 2nd- , 4th-, and 6th-order coefficients of the series expansion for the radial distribution of the dielectric constant of SELFOC or other GRIN rods is reported. Such data are required, for example, in predicting temporal dispersion in SELFOC fiber waveguides. The interferometer directly measures the relative phase delay along meridional-ray paths of different initial field angles. The mathematical analysis consists of finding the 2nd-, 4th-, and 6th-order coefficients which yield the best least squares fit to the measured phase shifts. The 4th-order results are found to be in good agreement with those of I. Kitano and co-workers. As an experimental application we describe a small, mechanically stable, diffraction-limited collimator for use with an optical fiber waveguide.     

Electrosynthesis of novel photochemically active inherently conducting polymers using an ionic liquid electrolyte

Use of an ionic liquid as a solvent enabled the successful preparation of films composed of polyterthiophene doped with an anionic dye. Photoelectrochemical cells constructed using these films showed significant improvements in photovoltaic properties when the films were first reduced in the presence of a cationic dye. Absorption spectroscopic studies provided evidence for retention of both dyes in the films, while photocurrent action spectra showed that the increase in photovoltaic performance was due largely to improvements in light harvesting by the polymer.
