A three-stage route to chemically upcycle post-consumer poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) to produce high compressive strength composites is reported. This procedure involves initial glycolysis with diethylene glycol to produce a mixture (GPET) comprising oligomers of 2–7 terephthalate units followed by trans/esterification of GPET with fatty acid chains supplied by brown grease, an agricultural by-product of animal fat of relatively low nutritional or fuel value. This process yields PGB comprising a mixture of mono-terephthalate ester derivatives. The olefin units provided by unsaturated fatty acid chains in brown grease were crosslinked by an inverse vulcanization reaction with elemental sulfur to give composites GBSx (x = wt% S, varied from 80%–90%). The compressive strengths of GBS80 (27.5 ± 2.6 MPa) and GBS90 (19.2 ± 0.8 MPa) exceed the compressive strength required of ordinary Portland cement (17 MPa) for its use in residential building foundations. The current route represents a way to repurpose waste plastic, energy sector by-product sulfur, and agricultural by-product brown grease to give high strength composites with mechanical properties suggesting their possible use to replace less sustainably sourced legacy structural materials.  相似文献

Three milking frequency treatments were compared: twice daily milking; thrice daily milking until milk dropped below 24 kg; thrice daily milking until milk dropped below 31 kg. Three time milking was at least 45 days but no more than 150 days. Cows (12 to 14 per group) were managed alike except for milking frequency. In early lactation, increased milking had little effect. With time the superiority in yields increased such that cows on three times for 150 days were outproducing two time cows by 20%. Cumulative milk yields were greater for the thrice groups than for the twice group by 5% at 56 days, 11 and 8% at 154 days, 11 and 9% at 182 days, and 10% at 280 days. Fat percentage, adjusted for previous lactation fat percentage, averaged .2 to .3% lower for the cows milked three times until 24 kig but only .1% lower for cows milked thrice until 31 kg. Increased yield was primarily from prolonged peak yield and less subsequent decline. Switching from three to two milkings decreased yield 6 to 8% in the 1st wk. However, three time milking had a positive carryover, apparently due to higher starting yield at the point at which they were switched.  相似文献

Serum samples from 1,264 feral pigs from Ossabaw Island, Georgia were initially screened for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT) using whole-formalinized tachyzoites and mercaptoethanol. Seropositive samples were also tested by the Sabin-Feldman dye test, the latex agglutination test (LAT), and the indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT). Ossabaw Island is a remote, barrier island located southeast of Savannah, Georgia. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 11 (0.9%) of 1,264 pigs. The antibody titers were 1:20 (1 pig), 1:80 (2 pigs), 1:160 (2 pigs), 1:320 (4 pigs), and 1:640 (2 pigs) by the MAT, and 1:8 (2 pigs), 1:16 (3 pigs), 1:32 (1 pig), 1:64 (2 pigs), 1:128 (1 pig), and > or = 1:256 (2 pigs) by the Sabin-Feldman dye test. By the LAT, 5 pigs had a titer of > or = 1:64 and by the IHAT all 11 pigs had a titer of < 1:64. Antibodies (MAT titer, > or = 1:25) were found in 31 (18.2%) of 170 feral pigs from mainland Georgia. This seroprevalence on the mainland was significantly higher (P < 0.0001) as compared on Ossabaw Island. The markedly low prevalence of T. gondii on Ossabaw Island was attributed to the virtual absence of cats on the Island; only 1 domestic cat was known to be present.  相似文献

N profiles of several GaAs1−xNx epitaxial layers with different N mole fractions in the range 0 < x < 0.14 were obtained by using (1) heavy-ion elastic recoil detection analysis (HI-ERDA) along with Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) using a 35 MeV Si6+ beam, and (2) nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) with the 14N(α, p)17O reaction, also with RBS, using a 3.7 MeV 4He+ beam. The results from the two techniques are compared and the advantages, disadvantages and capabilities are discussed.  相似文献

A mixed-mode method is investigated for the dynamic analysis of partially prismatic structures, such as box girders with intermediate diaphragms and supports, or with variable-depth webs. Thus the prismatic ‘main structure’ is discretised by finite strips, and the non-prismatic ‘sub-structure’ by finite elements. After dynamic reduction of the finite element degrees of freedom, advantage may be taken of the finite strip harmonic expansions in determining mode shapes. The method is tested by a variety of examples. Thus for structures with transverse substructures (e.g. diaphragms), the method is shown to be successful, being up to an order of magnitude faster than finite elements. However, for structures with longitudinal substructures (e.g. variable-depth webs) the method is shown to be unreliable. This is because for such structures, approximations in the dynamic reduction procedure are found to be significant.  相似文献

The development and evaluation of a 2-dimensional physical model, which is designed to assist in the characterisation of complex solute transport problems in porous media, is described. The laboratory model is a transparent 2-dimensional porous media of nominal thickness and uses a non-invasive imaging technique in conjunction with a fluorescent dye tracer (sodium fluorescein) to monitor solute movements. Under ultraviolet (UV) illumination the dye emits visible light which is imaged by a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera. The image is processed to estimate the 2-dimensional distribution of tracer concentrations. The system can successfully model a simple contaminant plume within a homogenous porous matrix constructed from glass beads (60-100 microm). Experimental results show that transverse dispersion coefficient was 3.9 x 10(-10) m2/s when sodium fluorescein transported in porous matrix with a walter velocity of 5.71 x 10(-6) m/s. The low transverse dispersion coefficient suggests that the molecular diffusion of solute cannot be neglected under low velocity of the water. The advantages of using UV rather than an ordinary light system are a reduction in noise and experimental errors. Errors due to light dispersion within the model are shown to be negligible for the current model. Since contaminant with aromatic rings are usually fluorescent and biological samples can be labelled by fluorescent dye, this imaging technique using UV excited fluorescent dye will be used to investigate biodegradation process in porous media.  相似文献

Acid-adapted cultures of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes were inoculated in meat decontamination spray-washing runoff fluids in order to evaluate their survival and potential to form biofilms on stainless steel coupons. The cultures (107 cfu ml−1) and stainless steel coupons were exposed to mixtures of water and organic acid washings (composites of each of 2% acetic acid or lactic acid washings with water washings from meat decontamination in proportions of 1/9, 1/49, 1/99 [vol/vol]) or to water washings for up to 14 days at 15°C. E. coli O157:H7 formed biofilms and remained detectable (1.3 log cfu cm−2) on stainless steel for up to 4 d in the 1/9 dilution (pH 3.17–3.77) of the organic acid washings, and persisted throughout storage (14 d) in the 1/49 (pH 3.96–4.33) and 1/99 (pH 4.34–6.86) dilution of the organic acid washings. L. monocytogenes populations were unable to form detectable (<1.3 log cfu cm−2) biofilms in the 1/9 and 1/49 dilutions of both organic acid washings for up to 14 d; however, by day-14 in the 1/99 dilution of the washings, the pathogen was able to attach at detectable levels (2.7 to 3.4 logs). The pH effects of lower concentrations (1/49 or 1/99) of acidic washings decreased over time due to the formation of amine compounds produced by the natural meat flora, allowing resuscitation of the acid-stressed pathogen survivors. The resuscitation of acid-stressed pathogens may potentially enhance their survival and prevalence in biofilms and thus more attention should be focused on avoiding or minimizing the collection of decontamination runoff fluids on food contact equipment surfaces.  相似文献
