Discrete failure-time distributions can be appropriate to model lifetimes. This paper represents two well-known non-parametric families of discrete distributions: decreasing and increasing mean-residual-life. In this study, we investigated the antifungal activity of lactose oxidase (LO) as a potential biopreservative in dairy products. Our study objectives were to screen antifungal activity of LO against common mold strains, to detect the minimum inhibitory level of LO against the same strains, and to understand how LO affects the pH and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts in set yogurt. Five mold strains (Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium citrinumPenicillium communePenicillium decumbens, and Penicillium roqueforti) were used throughout study. These strains were previously isolated from dairy manufacturing plants. Throughout the study, yogurts were stored at 21 ± 2°C for 14 d. Antifungal activity of LO was screened using 2 enzyme levels (1.2 and 12 g/L LO) against selected strains on the surface of a miniature laboratory set-yogurt model. For all tested strains, no visible mold growth was detected on the surface of yogurts covered with LO compared with control yogurt without LO. The minimum inhibitory level of LO against each strain was further investigated using 4 enzyme levels (0.12, 0.48, 0.84, and 1.2 g/L LO) on the miniature laboratory set-yogurt model. We detected 0.84 g/L LO as the minimum level inhibiting visible hyphal growth across strains. The minimum inhibitory level of LO varied for each individual strain. To study the effect of LO on the pH of yogurt, miniature laboratory set-yogurt models were covered with different enzyme levels (0.12, 0.48, 0.84, 1.2, and 12 g/L LO). At d 14, a difference was detected comparing pH values of treatments to control with no LO. Commercial low-fat set yogurt was used to study the effect of LO on LAB survival when yogurt surface was covered with 0.84 g/L LO under the same experimental conditions. Control with no LO was included. At d 14, 3 levels of catalase were added (0, 0.01, and 0.1%) to each treatment. To enumerate LAB, homogenized samples were plated on de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe agar and incubated. Yogurts with 0.84 g/L LO had lower LAB counts compared with control yogurts, and catalase level did not have a significant effect on LAB counts. Our results demonstrated potential antifungal efficacy of LO against common spoilage organisms in dairy products with residual lactose and relatively low pH. Manufacturers should establish efficacy of LO against mold strains of interest and determine the effects of LO on organoleptic properties and LAB survival in set yogurt.  相似文献

In this contribution, we discuss the possibility of applying the scattering-cancellation-based plasmonic cloaking technique to reduce the scattering from a sensing device, lowering its disturbance on sensing without affecting its ability to measure and “sense” the external world. The plasmonic cloak, while allowing the external fields to penetrate into the cover, may be able to suppress the scattering without necessarily shielding its interiors from the impinging light, which may be of great use if we wish to “sense” the external world, or receive an external signal, from inside the cloak. Our results may provide a unique sensing system that may receive and transmit signals, while its presence may not be perceived by the surrounding. This may be of great importance in a wide range of biological, optical, physical and engineering applications.  相似文献

Due to their non-polluting nature and environment friendliness, Renewable Energies have gained great deal of attention and deserve a substantial body of both theoretical and empirical research. Amongst other factors, the low operational cost and simple maintenance procedures attributed the Oscillating Water Column (OWC) are perhaps the main reasons why this system is the most used concept for the ocean wave energy capture.In this paper, through extensive experimental research various geometrical designs of an OWC system is investigated and the optimized set up for the maximum energy harness is obtained.The initial chamber dimensions were 10 × 50 × 53 cm with the chamber being placed in an open channel with wave-simulating equipment with dimensions of 16 × 0.7 × .05 m. For various chamber geometries, with the aid of a air rotameter and a Pitot tube equipped with a digital manometer, the outlet air flow and velocity from the chamber was measured and registered.The measurements were then interpreted to provide design data for the optimal geometry of the chamber that may yield the maximum conversion of wave energy to useful energy.  相似文献

Renewable‐based lubricants are being considered as potential alternatives to petroleum‐based lubricants for various reasons, mainly increased environmental sensitivity. However, understanding the tribological performance of such vegetable‐based lubricants under elevated temperatures is critical for their industrial implementation. This study focuses on the friction and abrasion rate characteristics of soybean and sunflower base oils in comparison to a base mineral oil under sliding wear at elevated temperatures. It was found that the abrasion rate and friction were less severe for the vegetable‐based lubricants up to temperatures around 100°C. The observed performance of the vegetable‐based lubricants was verified using a kinetic reaction mechanism model of lubricant degradation. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Optical measurements are used to investigate the crystalline quality and the stress in thin AlN layers; these thin films are grown on cubic silicon carbide layers which are in turn grown on silicon (111) substrates. Different Ge amounts were deposited at the silicon substrate in order to reduce the lattice parameters mismatch between Si and SiC grown layers. The residual stress of the hexagonal AlN layers is derived from the phonon frequency shifts of the E1(TO) phonon mode. The crystalline quality of AlN films is investigated by considering the intensity of E1(TO) mode of the 2H-AlN and its full width of the half maximum (FWHM). Ge deposition at low temperature 325 °C, before the carbonization process leads to an improved crystalline quality and a reduced residual stress in the AlN/SiC/Si heterostructures. The best crystalline quality and the lowest stress value are found in the case where 1ML Ge amount was predeposited. The E1(TO) mode, phonon frequency shifts-down by 3 cm? 1/GPa with respect to an unstrained layer. The obtained values for the phonon deformation are in reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations.  相似文献

The behavior of electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofibers embedded with urea is studied as a function of various process parameters. Our results show that three‐dimensional nanofiber networks can be obtained when high concentrations of urea in the solution are used during electrospinning. The nanofibers are characterized using both scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The stability of the nanofiber as a function of electric field has also been studied. The successful formation of three‐dimensional nanofiber networks can open new trends toward applications in fertilizers containing nanofibers in the nanoagricultural field. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ozonation process has become one of the most favorable processes among soil remediation technologies nowadays. Ozone, which has an oxidation potential of 2.07 V and acts as a powerful oxidizer, is capable of degrading organic pollutants of soil in a short period of time without producing any toxic residuals. In this study the capability of ozone, as an ex-situ method of soil treatment, in remediating the leachate-contaminated soil has been investigated. To maximize the removal efficiency of organic content of soil, design of experiments using the response surface method (RSM) and central composite design (CCD) have been employed. To select the range of effective parameters several experiments were performed at laboratory scale. Results showed a range of effective parameters on the ozonation process, including pH, humidity, and initial soil pollution. Present research shows that acid-washed ozone greatly enhanced the removal efficiency. According to the developed model, the maximum removal efficiency using acid-washed ozone was obtained by setting the parameters as pH = 10.8, humidity of 5% and initial organic content of soil to be 7720 mg/kg. Confirmation experiments showed that RSM could be effectively utilized for the optimization of the ozonation process. Analysis of variance also showed that pH was the most significant factor affecting removal efficiency.  相似文献

Pyrolysis kinetics of thermal decomposition of bitumen was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA experiments were conducted at multiple heating rates of 5, 10, 20°C min–1 up to 800°C to obtain the pyrolysis characteristics of bitumen. Weight loss curve from TGA shows that two different stages occurred during bitumen pyrolysis. Differential method has been used for determining the kinetic parameters and the best fit for the order of reaction was found based on the R2 values. Kinetics results confirm the presence of two different stages in bitumen pyrolysis with varying kinetic parameters. The average activation energy for the first and second stage was 29 and 60 kJ mol?1 and the average order of the reaction was 1.5 and 0.25, respectively. Experiments have been conducted with different reservoir sand. The effect of different source of sand reveals no effect on the pyrolysis behaviour of bitumen. A considerable difference was found with the pyrolysis of bitumen–sand mixtures and bitumen alone based on coke yield and activation energy. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering  相似文献
