The lager brewing yeast, Saccharomyces pastorianus, an allopolyploid species hybrid, contains 2 diverged sub-genomes; one derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Sc-type) and the other from Saccharomyces bayanus (Sb-type). We analyzed the functional roles of these orthologous genes in determining the phenotypic features of S. pastorianus. We used a custom-made oligonucleotide microarray containing probes designed for both Sc-type and Sb-type ORFs for a comprehensive expression analysis of S. pastorianus in a pilot-scale fermentation. We showed a high degree of correlation between the expression levels and the expression changes for a majority of orthologous gene sets during the fermentation process. We screened the functional categories and metabolic pathways where Sc- or Sb-type genes have higher expression levels than the corresponding orthologous genes. Our data showed that, for example, pathways for sulfur metabolism, cellular import, and production of branched amino acids are dominated by Sb-type genes. This comprehensive expression analysis of orthologous genes can provide valuable insights on understanding the phenotype of S. pastorianus.  相似文献

Auditory brainstem implants (ABI) that electrically stimulate the surface of cochlear nucleus have been clinically used for the rehabilitation of deaf patients with bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The change of pitch perception with an active electrode location is not as clear in ABIs as in cochlear implants, a factor which might play a role in poorer speech performance in ABIs. The objective of present work was to develop an animal ABI model that could provide physiological data for future ABI development and optimization. The experimental system included a penetrating microelectrode array for microstimulation of the cochlear nucleus and a surface microelectrode array for mapping evoked potentials over the auditory cortex. We first obtained tone-evoked cortical activation patterns, which represented a place code of the frequency and intensity of test tones, i.e., the ampli-tonotopic organization, and compared the patterns with those evoked by cochlear nuclear microstimulation. Our experimental results demonstrated that microstimulation of both the dorsal and ventral cochlear nucleus (DCN and VCN) could access the cortical ampli-tonotopic organization as acoustic stimuli did. We also found that the cortical dynamic range was wider for the DCN than VCN stimulation and for the low-frequency than for the high-frequency pathway. The present results have great implications for improved ABI performance.  相似文献

The design and development of a 13.3 GHz three-pole Chebyshev bandpass filter using a YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7- delta / thin film on an MgO substrate is described. An insertion loss of 0.2 dB at the centre frequency and an unloaded Q of 2800 are obtained at 77 K. The measured characteristics are better than other high-temperature superconductor planar filters so far reported.<>  相似文献

In contrast to the ultrasonic measurement of fetal heart motion, the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) provides clinically significant information concerning the electrophysiological state of a fetus. In this paper, a novel method for extracting the fetal ECG from abdominal composite signals is proposed. This method consists of the cancellation of the mother's ECG and blind source separation with the reference signal (BSSR). The cancellation of the mother's ECG component was performed by subtracting the linear combination of mutually orthogonal projections of the heart vector. The BSSR is a fixed-point algorithm, the Lagrange function of which includes the higher order cross-correlation between the extracted signal and the reference signal as the cost term rather than a constraint. This realizes the convexity of the Lagrange function in a simple form, which guarantees the convergence of the algorithm. By practical application, the proposed method has been shown to be able to extract the P and T waves in addition to the R wave. The reliability and accuracy of the proposed method was confirmed by comparing the extracted signals with the directly recorded ECG at the second stage of labor. The gestational age-dependency of the physiological parameters of the extracted fetal ECG also coincided well with that of the magnetocardiogram, which proves the clinical applicability of the proposed method.  相似文献

Chlorella regularis strain YA-603 was previously found to exhibit a comparatively high growth rate and improved 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) productivity when cultured heterotrophically. Although the universal tetrapyrrole precursor ALA is synthesized from glutamate in algae and higher plants, in this study the addition of glutamate to the medium did not enhance ALA production in the heterotrophic culture of C. regularis YA-603. On the other hand, the addition of glycine, which is a precursor of ALA biosynthesis via the Shemin pathway in animal cells and some bacteria, enhanced both the specific growth rate and ALA production. Moreover, when a second glycine addition was made during the culture, the ALA concentration increased by about 1.5 times compared to that obtained with one glycine addition. From these results, it is suggested that the Shemin pathway contributes to ALA production, and that addition of glycine in the heterotrophic culture of C. regularis YA-603 can significantly increase the amount of ALA produced.  相似文献

This paper proposes a maintenance method for optical fiber cable networks that uses 1650-nm wavelength band light. We determined the maintenance wavelength of 1650-nm after considering the maintenance system requirements and the future trends in optical transmission systems. We improved the conventional maintenance system by adding appropriate system components including a narrow wavelength light source and a fiber-grating filter for the 1650-nm wavelength band. We designed the system and undertook manufacturing trials. The characteristics of our proposed maintenance method indicate good practical performance levels  相似文献

The integral pulse frequency modulation (IPFM) model has been used for the following two purposes. First, it has been utilized to verify the correspondence between the spectral structure of autonomic input and the estimated spectrum of heart rate variability (HRV), relying mainly on the theoretical work of Bayly (1968). Second, the IPFM model provides a framework for evaluating how precisely the proposed method of HRV analysis could estimate the input spectral structure. However, the appropriateness of the IPFM model for both purposes has not been examined sufficiently in realistic situations. Here, the spectral structure of the pulse train generated by the IPFM model is theoretically derived for an input signal containing multiple frequency components. This is a more general condition than the single sinusoidal input signal used earlier. In accordance with the theoretical results, the magnitude of the spectral distortion is computed for a pair of varied frequencies, considering the corresponding coefficient of variation of interpulse intervals. Results show that the distortion could be nonnegligible under practical values of the coefficient of variation. Such distortion may well affect the spectral structure in the wide frequency range. This study suggests that the spectral structure of HRV should be interpreted carefully, taking the above distortion properties into account, even though the IPFM model appears to be established as a mechanism mediating between autonomic input and heart rate variability  相似文献
