The curing behavior of an epoxy/clay nanocomposite system composed of a bifunctional epoxy resin with an aromatic amine curing agent and an organically modified clay was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the curing behavior of the epoxy/clay nanocomposite system. The curing rate of the nanocomposite system increased with increasing clay content. A kinetic equation, considering an autocatalytic reaction mechanism, could describe fairly well the curing behavior of the epoxy/clay nanocomposite system. The reaction kinetic parameters of the kinetic equation were determined by fitting DSC conversion data to the kinetic equation, using a nonlinear numerical method. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to investigate the thermomechanical properties of the epoxy/clay nanocomposite system. The glass transition temperature of the epoxy/clay nanocomposite system increased slightly with increasing clay content. The structure of the nanocomposite system was characterized by X‐ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscope imaging. The formation of intercalated structures was observed dominantly in the epoxy/clay nanocomposites, together with some exfoliated structures. POLYM. ENG. We develop a miniaturized batch-type screw mixer (BSM) for uniform mixing of polymer resin and nanoparticles, based on the stretching of material elements. This stretching is induced by the combination of recirculating cross-sectional flows in deep channels of the screw and high shear stress developed at flight regions. The BSM is used to produce a polymer nano-composite composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and polydimethylsiloxane resin. The mixing performance of the BSM is characterized quantitatively by estimating two different types of mixing efficiencies (i.e., dispersive mixing and distributive mixing) via transmitted light microscope images. The developed BSM highly improves the mixing performance rather than that of a conventional ultrasonic mixing device. 相似文献

The synergistic effects of boron nitride (BN) powder and die on the rheology and processability of metallocene‐catalyzed low density polyethylene (mLDPE) were investigated. The processability in the extrusion process is closely related to the interfacial properties between the polymer melts and the die wall. BN powder was added to mLDPE to reduce the friction coefficient and surface energy. Adding 0.5 wt% BN powder to mLDPE was very effective in improving the processability and the extrudate appearance. To study the effect of die surface property, three different dies were applied in capillary extrusion. One was conventional tungsten carbide (TC) die, and the others were hot‐pressed BN (hpBN) die and hot‐pressed BN composite (hpBNC) die. The applications of these BN dies were quite effective in delaying surface melt fracture (sharkskin) and postponing gross melt fracture to higher shear rate compared to the TC die. These improvements result from the fact that BN dies reduce the wall shear stress significantly and promote slip. The synergistic effect of processability could be obtained when both BN powder and hpBN die were used together. 相似文献

The velocity fluctuations in the immediate vicinity of a free interface were measured with a hot film anemometer. And mass
transfer rates and eddy exposure times were analyzed by using the method of deterministic approach. These mass transfer rates
were compared with the mass transfer rates by means of concentration measurements in the air-water system.
The eddy exposure time distributions obtained from velocity data were skewed toward the lower time value. The contribution
of eddies wi:h small exposure time was increased as the liquid became more turbulent. The mass transfer rates were mainly
contributed by the Prandtl size eddies and even larger eddies. The mass transfer predictions by the single eddy model employing

To stabilize vitamin A in a cosmetic/dermatological formulation, we present here a new encapsulation method based on polymer microspheres having a localized “proton‐buffering” capacity. Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐g‐polyethylenimine (PMMA‐g‐PEI) was prepared by direct condensation grafting of PEI onto poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐methyl acrylic acid). The reaction was confirmed by FT‐IR analysis showing the amide vibration at 1,550 cm?1. Elemental analysis indicated that the weight content of the grafted PEI was 1.6% (w/w). Vitamin A was encapsulated into PMMA‐g‐PEI microspheres by using an oil‐in‐water (O/W) single emulsion method. The presence of PEI moiety dramatically improved the chemical stability of vitamin A in microspheres. Vitamin A encapsulated within PMMA‐g‐PEI microspheres maintained 91% of its initial activity after 30‐day incubation at 40°C, while only maintaining 60% within plain PMMA microspheres. This study demonstrates that proton‐buffering within hydrophobic polymer matrix is a useful strategy for stabilizing “acid‐labile” active ingredients. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Statistical properties of interparticle/void distance (ID) for various particle/void and dispersion types are studied in relation with toughening of plastics using computer‐generated three‐dimensional models. Particle/void size groups adopted were either of constant diameter or of log‐normal distribution. Particles/voids were dispersed at uniform‐random or flocculated with multiple clusters. It was found that IDs are (a) of approximately Gaussian distribution for particles/voids of either a constant diameter or a log‐normal distribution, when they are dispersed at uniform‐random, but (b) not of Gaussian distribution for particle/void sizes of bimodal log‐normal distribution, nor for flocculated log‐normal distribution of particles/voids dispersed with multiple clusters. It was also found that the degree of ID uniformity for a single group of log‐normally sized particles/voids is not sensitive to standard deviation of particle/void size. Mixing effect on ID properties using two groups of log‐normally distributed particles/voids with similar mean particle/void diameters was simulated. It was found that, when a significant amount (36 vol %) of particles/voids of a small mean and standard deviation of ID was mixed with a group of particles/voids of a large mean and standard deviation of ID, mean and standard deviation of ID for the mixture were not substantially lower than those of the group of particles/voids of the large mean and standard deviation of ID. It was also found that the degree of ID uniformity for the mixture of the two groups was lower than those of individual groups, indicating that the mixing has deleterious effect on toughening. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A study has been made of the electrochemical etching of 99.99% aluminum foils at a current density of 50 mA cm–2in AlCl3–HCl solutions (1 m Cl–) at 80 °C. The solutions were made by dissolving metallic aluminum into 1m HCl solution, to give a Cl– concentration of 1 m. The number density of etch tunnels and the homogeneity of tunnel length decreased, and the mean pit size and its standard deviation increased with increasing Al3+ concentration. The results were discussed based on potential transients at a current density of 50 mA cm–2, current–potential curves at a scan rate of 10 m Vs–1 and electrochemical impedance spectra. 相似文献

We prepared poly(p‐phenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA–PDA), poly(p‐phenylene 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidene diphthalimide), and their copolyimides with various compositions to explore the relationship between the water sorption and structure. The water sorption behaviors were gravimetrically investigated as a function of composition and temperature and interpreted with a Fickian diffusion model in films. Overall, the water sorption behaviors were strongly dependent on the changes in morphological structure, which originated from the variations in composition. When the content of the bulky hexafluoroisopropylidene group (6FDA) was increased, the water uptake decreased from 5.80 to 3.18 wt %, whereas the diffusion coefficient increased from 3.6 × 10?10 to 11.3 × 10?10 cm2/s. The relatively high water uptake in the PMDA–PDA polyimide film was successfully healed by the incorporation of 6FDA, which may have resulted from the increases in the intermolecular packing order and hydrophobicity. The degree of orientation and crystallinity, which are in‐plane characteristics, were directly correlated to the diffusion coefficient and activation energy in the polyimide film. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The high melt viscosity of polypropylene was studied by grafting bifunctional monomers, 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA), onto homopolypropylene (HPP) and random ter‐polypropylene (RTPP) under electron‐beam irradiation. Creation of the high‐melt‐viscosity polypropylene was possible at low radiation dosage and low monomer content, under a prohibition of both radiation degradation and homopolymerization. TPGDA monomer was more effective in increasing the melt viscosity of HPP compared with RTPP, whereas HDDA monomer was more effective for enhancing the melt viscosity of RTPP. Such different effects of monomers on melt viscosity may arise from different monomer structures, namely, TPGDA has additional three methyl groups, but HDDA has no methyl groups. Electron‐beam radiation technology, on an increase of the melt viscosity, was much more effective in HPP than RTPP, when compared with virgin polymers. Modified RTPP and HPP with high melt viscosity were capable of foaming with numerous fine cells, of which the modified HPP with 1.5 mmol TPGDA and 0.5 kGy could create more spherical foam cells and its bending strength was 1.5 times more than that of the foamed RTPP.
