Vinyl polymerization, 399. Polymerization of methyl methacrylate with sodium polystyrenesulfonate in presence of polyethyleneglycol

The effect of polyethyleneglycol on the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated with an aqueous solution of sodium polystyrenesulfonate was studied. Under the definite condition, the conversion of methyl methacrylate raised from 6.6 to 100% by the addition of polyethyleneglycol. It was concluded that polyethyleneglycol acted only as a host of Na⁺, but not as a phase transfer catalyst.     

Raman Spectroscopy of Laser‐Shocked Nitrobenzene

A technique for in situ Raman spectroscopy of laser‐shocked nitrobenzene was developed. Raman spectra of shocked nitrobenzene are obtained up to ∼3.5 GPa, and peak shifts at particular frequencies are observed. The shifts are plotted as a function of density and compared with the data under isothermal compression. Both data provide the same results. This indicates that the numbers of peak shifts of nitrobenzene depend solely on material density.     

The structure of the core polyol of the ether lipids fromSulfolobus acidocaldarius

The major ether-type lipid structures ofSulfolobus acidocaldarius (ATCC33909) were composed of caldarchaeol and calditoglycerocaldarchaeol. However, the characterization by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry showed that the structure of calditol in calditoglycerocaldarchaeol is not nonitol, 2-(1′,2′,3′-trihydroxypropyl)1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroxyhexane, but 2-hydroxymethyl-1-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxy),2,3,4,5-cyclopentanetetraol with an ether linkage in the molecule. Such an intermolecular ether linkage was resistant, to BCl₃ treatment, but nonresistant to 57% HI degradation treatment conducted at 100°C for 60 h, producting 2-hydroxymethyl-1,2,3,4,5-cyclopentanepentaol from calditol as reaction product. Further, it was confirmed that the structure of calditol is essentially a derivative of glycerol, and hydrocarbon chains were conjugated to the glycerol-like site in the structure. The calditol with an ether linkage in the molecule suggested an important role regarding the properties of heat-resistance and acid-resistance observed inSulfolobales. APPLICATION OF THE UNIFIED STATISTICAL MATERIAL DATABASE FOR DESIGN AND LIFE／RISK ASSESSMENT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPONENTS

Statistical manipulation of material data was conducted for probabilistic life assessment or risk-based design and maintenance for high temperature components of power plants. To obtain the statistical distribution of material properties, dominant parameters affecting material properties are introduced into normalization of statistical variables. Those parameters are hardness, chemical composition, characteristic microstructural features and so on. Creep and fatigue properties are expressed by normalized parameters and the unified statistical distributions are obtained. These probability distribution functions show good coincidence statistically with the field database of steam turbine components. It was concluded that the unified statistical baseline approach is useful for the risk management of components in power plants.     

Influence of anti-LDL receptor antibody on the transfer of cholesterol from LDL to isolated lymphocytes in normal subjects

Results 2 1/2 years after an enuresis nocturna training are presented, including rate of success, percentage and duration of relapse for 113 children (mean age 11.6 year at the start of the training). The bibliotherapeutic treatment by parents did not require any intervention by a professional. Behaviour of parents in the event of a relapse differed between training conditions. Children in the Arousal condition recovered faster from a relapse, 90% of their parents used the Arousal training again at relapse or did not intervene at all and none of them consulted a professional. Clearly they had confidence in the method of Arousal training: combining the alarm device with reinforcement for correct behaviour at the time the alarm goes off. Parents in control conditions did not use the alarm device as often as the parents in the Arousal condition, but tried other means with less success, including consulting professionals.     

Phenotypic changes in lipopolysaccharide-treated cloned cells derived from transplantable rat malignant fibrous histiocytoma

To investigate a possible phenotypic modulation, MT-8L and MT-9L cells were induced by in vitro culture of undifferentiated MT-8 and fibrohistiocytic MT-9 cells, which had been established from a rat malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), in the medium containing 10 micrograms lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/ml. MT-8L and MT-9L gave greater positive reactions for histiocytic lysosomal markers and showed ultrastructures of histiocytic natures. In MT-8L, alpha-smooth muscle actin-positive myofibroblastic cells also significantly increased in number. MT-8L expressed both histiocytic and myofibroblastic phenotypes. MT-8L-induced tumors consisted mainly of storiform type MFH, differing from undifferentiated sarcoma type induced by MT-8. MT-9L and MT-9 tumors showed a storiform pattern. A phenotypic modulation of MFH cells was easily induced by LPS treatment.
