Agro‐food systems are undergoing rapid innovation in the world and the system's continuum is promoted at different scales with one of the main outcomes to improve nutrition of consumers. Consumer knowledge through educational outreach is important to food and nutrition security and consumer demands guide breeding efforts. Maize is an important part of food systems. It is a staple food and together with rice and wheat, they provide 60% of the world's caloric intake. In addition to being a major contributor to global food and nutrition security, maize forms an important part of the culinary culture in many areas of Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Maize genetics are being exploited to improve human nutrition with the ultimate outcome of improving overall health. By impacting the health of maize consumers, market opportunities will be opened for maize producers with unique genotypes. Although maize is a great source of macronutrients, it is also a source of many micronutrients and phytochemicals purported to confer health benefits. The process of biofortification through traditional plant breeding has increased the protein, provitamin A carotenoid, and zinc contents of maize. The objective of this paper is to review the innovations developed and promoted to improve the nutritional profiles of maize and outcomes of the maize agro‐food system.  相似文献

Bacterial toxins are food safety hazards causing about 10% of all reported foodborne outbreaks in Europe. Pertinent to Gram‐positive pathogens, the most relevant toxins are emetic toxin and diarrheal enterotoxins of Bacillus cereus, neurotoxins of Clostridium botulinum, enterotoxin of Clostridium perfringens, and a family of enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus and some other staphylococci. These toxins are the most important virulence factors of respective foodborne pathogens and a primary cause of the related foodborne diseases. They are proteins or peptides that differ from each other in their size, structure, toxicity, toxicological end points, solubility, and stability, types of food matrix to which they are mostly related to. These differences influence the characteristics of required detection methods. Therefore, detection of these toxins in food samples, or detection of toxin production capacity in the bacterial isolate, remains one of the cornerstones of microbial food analysis and an essential tool in understanding the relevant properties of these toxins. Advanced research has led into new insights of the incidence of toxins, mechanisms of their production, their physicochemical properties, and their toxicological mode of action and dose‐response profile. This review focuses on biological, immunological, mass spectrometry, and molecular assays as the most commonly used detection and quantification methods for toxins of B. cereus, C. botulinum, C. perfringens, and S. aureus. Gathered and analyzed information provides a comprehensive blueprint of the existing knowledge on the principles of these assays, their application in food safety, limits of detection and quantification, matrices in which they are applicable, and type of information they provide to the user.  相似文献

Simulators of semiconductor devices have to solve systems of equations generated by the discretization of partial differential equations, which are the most time‐consuming part of the simulation process. Therefore, the use of an effective method to solve these linear systems is essential. In this work we have evaluated the efficiency of different parallel direct and iterative solvers used for the solution of the drift–diffusion equations in semiconductor device simulation. Several preconditioning techniques have been applied in order to minimize the execution times. We have found that FGMRES and BCGSTAB solvers preconditioned with Additive Schwarz are the most suitable for these types of problems. To increase their adhesion to silver, polyimide (PI) surfaces were modified by sulfonation reactions by means of different experimental procedures. The results of these modification reactions were analyzed in terms of the variation of the surface chemical composition examined by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Long‐time reactions were also followed by monitoring the increase in weight of the PI films. Changes in the total surface free energy were evaluated by contact angle measurements with the sessil drop method. The influence of the modification reactions on silver/PI adhesion was estimated by means of a 180° peeling test according to ASTM standards. Finally, the effect of chemical modification on film roughness was investigated by means of atomic force microscopy. The results obtained showed that a net improvement, that is, over the maximum rate according to the reference ASTM test, was attained via both the gaseous SO3 and concentrated H2SO4 procedures, with the latter procedure more effective in the presence of silver sulfate as a catalyst. However, the former was judged more convenient because of the low amount of reagents used and the simplicity of cleaning operations. Interestingly, optimum adhesion levels were attained after only very low contact times with all sulfonating agents, that is, after about 30 s. These results were compared with the effects on PI/silver adhesion of traditional etching procedures with KOH aqueous solutions at different temperatures. In this case, good adhesion was observed only after longer reaction times, that is, on the order of 1–2 min in the case of 1M KOH and 1 h in the case of 0.1M KOH. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In the present work, a convenient and straightforward approach to the preparation of borylated amidines based on the closo-dodecaborate anion [B12H11NCCH3NHR]−, R=H, Alk, Ar was developed. This method has two stages. A nitrile derivative of the general form [B12H11NCCH3] was obtained, using a modified technique, in the first stage. On the second stage the resulting molecular system interacted with primary amines to form the target amidine products. This approach is characterised by a simple chemical apparatus, mild conditions and high yields of the final products. The mechanism of the addition of amine to the nitrile derivative of the closo-dodecaborate anion was studied, using quantum-chemical methods. The interaction between NH3 and [B12H11NCCH3] ammonia was chosen as an example. It was found that the structure of the transition state determines the stereo-selectivity of the process. A study of the biological properties of borylated amidine sodium salts indicated that the substances had low toxicity and could accumulate in cancer cells in significant amounts.  相似文献

Visualization of electroconvective (EC) vortices at the undulated surface of an AMX anion-exchange membrane (Astom, Osaka, Japan) was carried out in parallel with the measurement of chronopotentiograms. Weak polybasic acid salts, including 0.02 M solutions of tartaric (NaHT), phosphoric (NaH2PO4), and citric (NaH2Cit) acids salts, and NaCl were investigated. It was shown that, for a given current density normalized to the theoretical limiting current calculated by the Leveque equation (i/ilimtheor), EC vortex zone thickness, dEC, decreases in the order NaCl > NaHT > NaH2PO4 > NaH2Cit. This order is inverse to the increase in the intensity of proton generation in the membrane systems under study. The higher the intensity of proton generation, the lower the electroconvection. This is due to the fact that protons released into the depleted solution reduce the space charge density, which is the driver of EC. In all studied systems, a region in chronopotentiograms between the rapid growth of the potential drop and the attainment of its stationary values corresponds to the appearance of EC vortex clusters. The amplitude of the potential drop oscillations in the chronopotentiograms is proportional to the size of the observed vortex clusters.  相似文献

Cognitive function decline is strictly related to age, resulting in the loss of the ability to perform daily behaviors and is a fundamental clinical neurodegeneration symptom. It has been proven that an adequate diet, comprehensive nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle may significantly inhibit neurodegenerative processes, improving cognitive functions. Therefore, intensive research has been conducted on cognitive-enhancing treatment for many years, especially with substances of natural origin. There are several intervention programs aimed at improving cognitive functions in elderly adults. Cognitive functions depend on body weight, food consumed daily, the quality of the intestinal microflora, and the supplements used. The effectiveness in the prevention of dementia is particularly high before the onset of the first symptoms. The impact of diet and nutrition on age-associated cognitive decline is becoming a growing field as a vital factor that may be easily modified, and the effects may be observed on an ongoing basis. The paper presents a review of the latest preclinical and clinical studies on the influence of natural antioxidants on cognitive functions, with particular emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases. Nevertheless, despite the promising research results in animal models, the clinical application of natural compounds will only be possible after solving a few challenges.  相似文献
