Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) friction materials show promising tribological properties. Typically, carbon ceramic brake discs consist of a C/SiC rotor which is joined to a brake disc bell. Within this work, a novel metal-ceramic hybrid brake disc, consisting of C/SiC friction segments which are mounted by screws onto an aluminum carrier body, was designed and investigated. A prototype was built which was tribologically tested with three different brake pad materials, LowMet reference, modified SF C/SiC as well as C/C. A constant starting sliding velocity of 20 m/s and braking pressures of 1, 2, and 3 MPa were investigated. To simulate emergency braking conditions 10 consecutive brake applications were carried out in close succession for each brake pad material and braking pressure. The C/C brake pad material showed the highest average coefficient of friction followed by the LowMet and C/SiC material. However, the wear rates of the C/C and LowMet material were orders of magnitude higher compared to the C/SiC material.  相似文献

This paper presents results from the first international comparative study of non-profit housing organizations in Australia, England and the Netherlands to engage with panels of organizational leaders. The study uses a ‘modified Delphi method’ with Likert-type scaled surveys, followed by in-depth interviews. The paper introduces the concept of hybridity as a way of understanding the interaction of state, market and community drivers in steering non-profit housing organizations. In all three countries, findings indicate that there are clear limits to independence from continued state influence. In England this takes the form of state-directed cross-subsidy and welfare reform, in Australia business development strategies have had to respond to volatility and reductions in state funding, while in the Netherlands public policy has recently restricted the remit of associations to a low-income niche and reduced commercial involvement. These findings lend support to ‘contested logics’ models of organizational hybridity rather than either ‘out-of-control monstrous hybrids’ or linear privatization models.  相似文献

We present a number of recent evaluations of direct bonding, a glueless bonding technology, performed under ambient conditions. If combined with bond-strengthening, this geometry-conserving technology is well suited for an application in far ultraviolet immersion lithography. Our term beyond direct bonding refers to taking at least one additional technological step beyond direct bonding, involving chemical interface engineering, advanced silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, whereby the unwanted influence of dilatation mismatch is obviated. The combination of successive direct bonding, nanopillar lattice structures and silicon-technological engineering makes it possible for us to arrange quantum dots, wires, and planes in a transversal cascade. We also address the interrelationship between direct bonding and elasticity, as well as plasticity; the latter is in relation to direct bonded glass wafers that are thermally treated to create the geometric shape, e.g., required for specific lab-on-a-chip components with a three-dimensional overall configuration.  相似文献

Because of the growing number of applications of phononic crystals and other periodic structures, there is a renewed and growing interest in understanding the interaction of ultrasound with periodically corrugated surfaces. This paper presents a theoretical investigation of the transformation of ultrasound incident from the solid side onto a solid-liquid periodically corrugated interface. It is shown that it is possible to tailor the shape of a corrugated surface with given periodicity such that there is a significant amount of energy transformed into Scholte-Stoneley waves than if pure saw-tooth or sine-shaped surfaces were used. This permits the fabrication of periodic structures that can be patched on or engraved in body parts of a construction and enables efficient generation of Scholte-Stoneley waves. The study is performed for incident homogeneous plane waves as well as for bounded beams. Incident longitudinal waves are studied as well as incident shear waves.  相似文献

The concept and the design of a micro-solid oxide fuel cell system is described and discussed. The system in this study is called the ONEBAT system and consists of the fuel cell PEN (positive electrode – electrolyte – negative electrode) element, a gas processing unit, and a thermal system. PEN elements of free-standing multi-layer membranes are fabricated on Foturan® and on Si substrates using thin film deposition and microfabrication techniques. Open circuit voltages of up to 1.06 V and power of 150 mW cm−2 are achieved at 550 °C. The membranes are stable up to 600 °C. The gas processing unit allows butane conversion of 95% and hydrogen selectivity of 83% at 550 °C in the reformer and efficient after-burning of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and lower hydrocarbons in the post-combustor. Thermal system simulations prove that a large thermal gradient of more than 500 °C between the hot module and its exterior are feasible. The correlation between electrical power output – system size and thermal conductivity – heat-transfer coefficient of the thermal insulation material are shown. The system design studies show that the single sub-systems can be integrated into a complete system and that the requirements for portable electronic devices can be achieved with a base unit of 2.5 W and a modular approach.  相似文献

Connecting several microbial fuel cell (MFC) units in series or parallel can increase voltage and current; the effect on the microbial electricity generation was as yet unknown. Six individual continuous MFC units in a stacked configuration produced a maximum hourly averaged power output of 258 W m(-3) using a hexacyanoferrate cathode. The connection of the 6 MFC units in series and parallel enabled an increase of the voltages (2.02 V at 228 W m(-3)) and the currents (255 mA at 248 W m(-3)), while retaining high power outputs. During the connection in series, the individual MFC voltages diverged due to microbial limitations at increasing currents. With time, the initial microbial community decreased in diversity and Gram-positive species became dominant. The shift of the microbial community accompanied a tripling of the short time power output of the individual MFCs from 73 W m(-3) to 275 W m(-3), a decrease of the mass transfer limitations and a lowering of the MFC internal resistance from 6.5 +/- 1.0 to 3.9 +/- 0.5 omega. This study demonstrates a clear relation between the electrochemical performance and the microbial composition of MFCs and further substantiates the potential to generate useful energy by means of MFCs.  相似文献

The reduction of oxygen at the cathode is one of the major bottlenecks of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). While research so far has mainly focused on chemical catalysis of this oxygen reduction, here we present a continuously wetted cathode with microorganisms that act as biocatalysts for oxygen reduction. We combined the anode of an acetate oxidizing tubular microbial fuel cell with an open air biocathode for electricity production. The maximum power production was 83 +/- 11 W m(-3) MFC (0.183 L MFC) for batch-fed systems (20-40% Coulombic yield) and 65 +/- 5 W m(-3) MFC for a continuous system with an acetate loading rate of 1.5 kg COD m(-3) day(-1) (90 +/- 3% Coulombic yield). Electrochemical precipitation of manganese oxides on the cathodic graphite felt decreased the start-up period with approximately 30% versus a non-treated graphite felt. After the start-up period, the cell performance was similar for the pretreated and non-treated cathodic electrodes. Several reactor designs were tested, and it was found that enlargement of the 0.183 L MFC reactor by a factor 2.9-3.8 reduced the volumetric power output by 60-67%. Biocathodes alleviate the need to use noble or non-noble catalysts for the reduction of oxygen, which increases substantially the viability and sustainability of MFCs.  相似文献

The voice of the social sciences in climate research and in climate policy discussions, except for interventions from economists mainly about the costs associated with policy options driven by climate science research, has been muted if not altogether absent. The absence of the social sciences from climate research and policy not surprisingly has coloured climate discourse in peculiar ways. We are making the case for a greater involvement and importance of the social sciences in interdisciplinary climate research.

When reading mammograms, radiologists combine information from multiple views to detect abnormalities. Most computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, however, use primitive methods for inclusion of multiview context or analyze each view independently. In previous research it was found that in mammography lesion-based detection performance of CAD systems can be improved when correspondences between MLO and CC views are taken into account. However, detection at case level detection did not improve. In this paper, we propose a new learning method for multiview CAD systems, which is aimed at optimizing case-based detection performance. The method builds on a single-view lesion detection system and a correspondence classifier. The latter provides class probabilities for the various types of region pairs and correspondence features. The correspondence classifier output is used to bias the selection of training patterns for a multiview CAD system. In this way training can be forced to focus on optimization of case-based detection performance. The method is applied to the problem of detecting malignant masses and architectural distortions. Experiments involve 454 mammograms consisting of four views with a malignant region visible in at least one of the views. To evaluate performance, five-fold cross validation and FROC analysis was performed. Bootstrapping was used for statistical analysis. A significant increase of case-based detection performance was found when the proposed method was used. Mean sensitivity increased by 4.7% in the range of 0.01-0.5 false positives per image.  相似文献
