This paper describes the use of computational fluid dynamics for the calculation of the flow resistance through computer-generated models resembling silica monoliths. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of skeleton heterogeneity on the flow resistance and, more precisely, to test the hypothesis that increased skeleton heterogeneity decreases the flow resistance. To evaluate the proposed model, 24 real silica monoliths have been prepared using the same method, covering a wide range of skeleton sizes (2.2 microm < d(s) < 8 microm) and porosities (0.47 < epsilon < 0.66). The permeability of these monoliths was determined by pressure drop measurements, and structural information was obtained by image analysis of laser scanning confocal microscopy-generated 3D images of the skeleton structure. The results indicate that the presence of preferential flow paths due to an increased heterogeneity of the flow through pore space reduces the flow resistance of monolithic media. It is also shown that the pore size is hence a much better suited scaling dimension than the skeleton size to reduce the permeability of monolithic columns.  相似文献

Skin whitening products are commercially available for cosmetic purposes in order to obtain a lighter skin appearance. They are also utilized for clinical treatment of pigmentary disorders such as melasma or postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. Whitening agents act at various levels of melanin production in the skin. Many of them are known as competitive inhibitors of tyrosinase, the key enzyme in melanogenesis. Others inhibit the maturation of this enzyme or the transport of pigment granules (melanosomes) from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes. In this review we present an overview of (natural) whitening products that may decrease skin pigmentation by their interference with the pigmentary processes.  相似文献

Hair has been proven to be suitable for non-destructive and non-invasive exposure assessments in human and mammal populations. A previous study with European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) showed that, for some metals, hair and spine metal concentrations were positively correlated to levels in liver, kidney and muscle. Although blood has been studied in a wide variety of species, the relationship between hair and blood metal concentrations has yet to be quantified in many mammalian species. Tissue concentrations from hedgehogs residing in a park with known metal pollution were compared with those from a reference park and correlations between contaminant levels in hair and blood, and spines and blood were studied. Moreover, the relative distribution of arsenic and metals in hair, spines and blood was determined. Elevated concentrations were found in hedgehogs residing in the polluted site for As (8.2 μg/g, 6.3 μg/g, 3.6 μg/ml), Cd (0.48 μg/g, 0.17 μg/g, 0.02 μg/ml) and Pb (7.6 μg/g, 7.3 μg/g, 54 μg/ml), in hair, spines and blood respectively. Positive correlations were identified for exposure levels between hair and blood as well as between spines and blood for three elements (As, Cd, and Pb), whereas a negative correlation was found between Cr concentrations in spines and blood. In conclusion, hair and spines can be used to monitor blood concentrations of some metals, although more data are needed on uptake from the food chain and on the incorporation dynamics of these contaminants.  相似文献

The impact of the static friction coefficient, the initial particle orientation, and the particle height‐to‐diameter ratio on the bed voidage of random packings with a low tube‐to‐particle diameter ratio is investigated for spherical and cylindrical particles using the discrete element method. Based on the numerical results a correlation is proposed to predict the bed voidage as a function of the static friction coefficient and the tube‐to‐particle diameter ratio for spheres, equilateral and non‐equilateral cylinders. This correlation is extended for the use of hollow cylinders.  相似文献

Application of mild inactivation treatments follows an increasing trend in the food industry and is often combined with sub-optimal intrinsic product conditions to ensure appropriate level of microbial safety. Listeria monocytogenes was subjected to mild heat treatment (20 min at 60 degrees C) and subsequently exposed to various mild preservation conditions based on increased NaCl concentration and decreased pH. Recovery and resuscitation of L. monocytogenes cells were studied using various methods. Using 12-fold Most Probable Number (MPN) method no difference in the amount of recovered cells under adverse conditions was noted between heat-treated and non-treated L. monocytogenes cells. Time-to-detection method using on-line OD measurements showed that heat-treated L. monocytogenes cells reached detection limit faster in acidified media and NaCl supplemented media in comparison with non-heated control cells. Flow cytometry (FCM) analysis using 5-6-carboxyfluorescein diacetate (cFDA) and propidium iodide (PI) staining showed presence of low numbers of viable cells. Overall, there was no indication of sub-lethal injury in L. monocytogenes cells after mild heat treatment.  相似文献

Macrophages act as immune scavengers and are important cell types in the homeostasis of various tissues. Given the multiple roles of macrophages, these cells can also be found as tissue resident macrophages tightly integrated into a variety of tissues in which they fulfill crucial and organ-specific functions. The lung harbors at least two macrophage populations: interstitial and alveolar macrophages, which occupy different niches and functions. In this review, we provide the latest insights into the multiple roles of alveolar macrophages while unraveling the distinct factors which can influence the ontogeny and function of these cells. Furthermore, we will highlight pulmonary diseases, which are associated with dysfunctional macrophages, concentrating on congenital diseases as well as pulmonary infections and impairment of immunological pathways. Moreover, we will provide an overview about different treatment approaches targeting macrophage dysfunction. Improved knowledge of the role of macrophages in the onset of pulmonary diseases may provide the basis for new pharmacological and/or cell-based immunotherapies and will extend our understanding to other macrophage-related disorders.  相似文献

The structural and electrochemical properties of the double perovskite-type oxide, PrBaMnMoO6-δ, was investigated using neutron diffraction with in-situ conductivity measurement under a dry Argon atmosphere from 25 °C to 700 °C. A Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction data confirmed monoclinic symmetry in the P21/n space group. Rietveld refinement also confirms the unit cell parameters of a = 5.6567 (1) Å, b = 5.6065 (2) Å, c = 7.9344 (1) Å and β = 84.43° with reliable atomic positions and refinement factors (R-factors). Neutron diffraction data refinement shows two minor phases (<5%), an orthorhombic AB2O5 type phase of PrMn2O5 in the Pbam (No. 32) space group with unit cell parameters, a = 7.9672 (1) Å, b = 8.9043 (2) Å and c = 5.8540 (1) Å and a scheelite phase of BaMoO4 in the tetragonal I41/a (88) space group with the unit cell parameters, a = b = 5.9522 (1) Å, and c = 12.3211 (2) Å. Morphological images revealed a porous and intertwined microstructure. In-situ conductivity measurement shows that the total conductivity of this material was 130.84 Scm?1 at 700 °C.  相似文献

Steel materials suffer extensive creep by the application at temperatures of about 700?°C and pressures about 350?bar in a power plant environment. The presented concept overwraps a steel pipe with a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) jacket in order to support the steel pipe and provide high temperature strength. Finite Element simulations show the influence of the wall thickness of CMC jacket and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) on circumferential stresses within the hybrid metal ceramic pipe. Suitable fiber and matrix materials were studied, composites fabricated and mechanical properties determined. Finally, a prototype was designed in order to confirm the feasibility of the concept. The lifetime of a pure steel pipe was increased by more than four-fold by the additional CMC jacket.  相似文献

Synthetic vaccines, based on antigenic peptides that comprise MHC−I and MHC-II T-cell epitopes expressed by tumors, show great promise for the immunotherapy of cancer. For optimal immunogenicity, the synthetic peptides (SPs) should be adjuvanted with suitable immunostimulatory additives. Previously, we have shown that improved immunogenicity in vivo is obtained with vaccine modalities in which an SP is covalently connected to an adjuvanting moiety, typically a ligand to Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2). SPs were covalently attached to UPam, which is a derivative of the classic TLR2 ligand Pam3CysSK4. A disadvantage of the triply palmitoylated UPam is its high lipophilicity, which precludes universal adoption of this adjuvant for covalent modification of various antigenic peptides as it renders the synthetic vaccine insoluble in several cases. Here, we report a novel conjugatable TLR2 ligand, mini-UPam, which contains only one palmitoyl chain, rather than three, and therefore has less impact on the solubility and other physicochemical properties of a synthetic peptide. In this study, we used SPs that contain the clinically relevant neoepitopes identified in a melanoma patient who completely recovered after T-cell therapy. Homogeneous mini-UPam-SP conjugates have been prepared in good yields by stepwise solid-phase synthesis that employed a mini-UPam building block pre-prepared in solution and the standard set of Fmoc-amino acids. The immunogenicity of the novel mini-UPam-SP conjugates was demonstrated by using the cancer patient's T-cells.  相似文献
