gm‐Extraction for rail‐to‐rail input stage linearization

Transconductance of rail‐to‐rail input stages in low‐voltage operational amplifiers depends on the presence of a large common mode input signal. Corrections must be implemented in order to correct it. Nevertheless, techniques actually used, based on switching or feedforward, still give relevant deviation from the constant transconductance condition. In this paper we present a new architecture based on extraction and feedback to the gain control, directly of the value of the transconductance of the amplifier to be controlled. This quantity does not contain the signal to be amplified, and thus once fed back, it does not affect the overall stage gain. A ‘reciprocal’ circuit, which performs the 1/x mathematical function, is introduced in order to achieve this extraction. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A general procedure to check conjunctive query containment

In this paper, we present a general procedure to test conjunctive query containment. We divide the containment problem into four categories, taking into account the underlying semantics (set or bag theoretic) and the presence or absence of built-in predicates in the queries. After a brief review of previous work on conjunctive query containment, we present a new procedure, called QCC (Query Containment Checker), which we show to be a general and uniform procedure to check the containment among conjunctive queries under the four categories mentioned above. We briefly describe the use of QCC to check bag containment of conjunctive queries, and explain in detail how to use QCC to check set containment of conjunctive queries with built-in predicates. In our conclusions, we point out some uses of QCC for other types of containment. Received: 21 January 2000 / 19 November 2001     

Stochastic independence of color-vision mechanisms confirmed by a subthreshold summation paradigm

We have used a subthreshold summation protocol to analyze spatial color-color interaction. By means of a CRT color monitor, we measured the threshold contours for a spatial frequency of 0.5 cycles/degree. Heterochromatic flicker photometry was used to obtain isoluminance. The results suggest that the blue-yellow (b-y) and red-green (r-g) contrast thresholds remained unchanged by the addition of fixed r-g and b-y subthreshold pedestals. Our subthreshold summation data then support the stochastic independence of colorvision mechanisms derived from Mullen and Sankeralli's work [Vision Res. 39, 733 (1999)] despite the differences that exist between the two experimental methods.     

Insulation lead failure: is it a matter of insulation coating, venous approach, or both?

Gag gene mutants of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) were analyzed for their potentials of inhibiting the replication of wild-type (wt) HIV-2, the second AIDS virus, in a single-round of viral replication. Of twenty-two HIV-1 gag mutants examined, seven were found to efficiently interfere with the replication of wt HIV-2. Some mutants, which can suppress the replication of wt HIV-1, did not show this inhibitory effect. These mutants were defective at the late phase of viral replication. A mutant designated NL-C1a was demonstrated to be very effective against the replication of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in monocytic cells as well as in lymphocytic cells.

Dual holographic interferometry for measuring the three velocity components in a fluid plane

A technique that allows one to measure simultaneously the three velocity components in a fluid plane is presented. One obtains the quantitative information from only one holographic recording by combining two different reconstruction processes. As both processes use an interferometric comparison of two waves, we refer to this technique as dual holographic interferometry. The far-field fringe pattern that is obtained when reconstruction is made with an expanded laser beam allows one to determine the in-plane velocity components. The image-field fringe pattern that is obtained when a pointwise laser beam is used for reconstruction contains information about an out-of-plane velocity component. As the two reconstruction processes have different sensitivities, two different ways to combine them are proposed. The system has been demonstrated in a fluidlike solid object and in a convective flow.     

Variable-gradient generator for micro- and nano-HPLC

A new, simple device generates accurate nano- and microflow rate gradients from any conventional HPLC system. The core of the new device is represented by an electric-actuated, computer-controlled, multiposition HPLC valve. The valve hosts six reservoirs for as many different mobile-phase compositions of increasing strength. A low flow rate stream pushes the weakest solvent through the column as long as required and at the desired flow rate, until the chromatographic run is started. From this time on, the electric actuation allows one to select which reservoir will be on-line with the column and for how long, thus generating a specific solvent gradient, through a sequence of controlled segments of precise mobile-phase composition. This permits one not only to exactly reproduce the programmed slope but also to achieve different gradient shapes (i.e., linear, convex, concave) for different separation needs. The new device has proven to be reliable and reproducible even at the lowest flow rate tested (250 nL x min(-1)) and in different chromatographic conditions.     

The safety of PolyGlycopleX? (PGX?) as shown in a 90-day rodent feeding study

Background  

This study was designed to evaluate the safety of PolyGlycopleX^? (PGX^?), a novel viscous dietary polysaccharide (fiber), when administered to Sprague Dawley^? rats in the diet for 90 days.     

Proteolytic activity of three probiotic strains in semi-hard cheese as single and mixed cultures: Lactobacillus acidophilus,Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium lactis

The influence of three probiotic strains (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei and Bifidobacterium lactis) in semi-hard cheese proteolysis patterns was assessed. Probiotics were inoculated both as single cultures and as a three-strain mix, and added to milk either after a pre-incubation step or directly to the vat. B. lactis did not show any effect on proteolysis of cheeses, while L. paracasei showed limited impact at the end of the ripening. In contrast, L. acidophilus significantly influenced secondary proteolysis from the beginning of ripening, causing an increase in the levels of small nitrogen-containing compounds and free amino acids and changes in the peptide profiles. The effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus on peptidolysis was more noticeable when it was added to cheese–milk after pre-incubation in an enriched milk fat substrate. Similar results obtained with the three-strain mixed culture, suggesting that L. acidophilus played a major role in secondary proteolysis of probiotic cheeses in this trial.
