BACKGROUND: Olive oil mill waste is a serious environmental problem in the Mediterranean basin given its particular characteristics of high organic content, seasonal and localized generation, and the type of processing involved. RESULTS: Olive mill waste from a three‐phase mill was characterized by means of total analysis, availability and mobility of the pollutants in order to help the decision‐maker about possible options for its valorization and/or disposal. Water content, loss of ignition, total organic carbon, phenol index and metals concentrations were measured to fully characterize the waste. Three leaching tests (NEN 7341, EN 12457 and UNE CEN‐TS 15364 EX) were carried out to evaluate the environmental hazard of the waste material and the leachates were characterized with respect to electric conductivity, pH, heavy metals, anions and organic pollutants (phenol index and total organic carbon) according to European waste directives. The results were compared with EU regulations for inert, non‐hazardous and hazardous waste disposal. CONCLUSION: It was found that not only organic parameters must be taken into account concerning the fate of this waste material, but also the mobility of heavy metals and anions should be studied. Furthermore, stabilization/solidification processes are recommended before landfill disposal of this kind of agro‐waste material. Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

We use the T-matrix approach and the analytical orientation-averaging technique to formulate the problem of light scattering by an ensemble of rotationally symmetric particles in arbitrary orientation. The mathematical formulation yields analytical expressions for the elements of the ensemble-averaged scattering matrix that involve no more than four nested summations. An expansion into generalized spherical functions is used in the particular case where the scatterers are partially aligned along the direction of incidence. A computer code that implements the analytical expressions derived is publicly available on the World Wide Web at http://irctr.et.tudelft.nl/ -Skaropoulos/T-matrix.htm. 相似文献

The present work proposes a systematic methodology for the optimal selection of controller parameters in the sense of minimizing a performance index, which is a quadratic function of the tracking error and the control effort. The performance index is calculated explicitly as an algebraic function of the controller parameters by solving Zubov's partial differential equation (PDE). Standard optimization techniques are then employed for the calculation of the optimal values of the controller parameters. The solution of Zubov's PDE is also used to estimate the closed-loop stability region for the chosen values of the controller parameters. The proposed approach is finally illustrated in a chemical reactor control problem. 相似文献

This paper reports results from wideband MIMO measurements performed in short range fixed wireless environments at 5.2 GHz. The objective is to provide MIMO channel characterization results for the measured environments and contribute to the limited available similar studies. Two kinds of propagation scenarios are investigated, rooftop to rooftop and street to rooftop, at three different sites always under LOS propagation conditions. The analysis of measurement data is performed in the context of non physical modeling, providing insight into the statistics of the measured channels. In particular, the slow time varying nature of the channel is studied and the narrow Doppler spectrum shape is approximated. Furthermore, frequency correlation results are obtained and the typical delay dispersion measures are extracted. Then, the antenna correlation is studied and the error of the Kronecker product approximation is evaluated. Finally, capacity results are provided and the channel measurements are characterized in terms of spatial multiplexing quality and multipath richness through condition number analysis.

This article focuses on the effect of both process topology and load balancing on various programming models for SMP clusters
and iterative algorithms. More specifically, we consider nested loop algorithms with constant flow dependencies, that can
be parallelized on SMP clusters with the aid of the tiling transformation. We investigate three parallel programming models,
namely a popular message passing monolithic parallel implementation, as well as two hybrid ones, that employ both message
passing and multi-threading. We conclude that the selection of an appropriate mapping topology for the mesh of processes has
a significant effect on the overall performance, and provide an algorithm for the specification of such an efficient topology
according to the iteration space and data dependencies of the algorithm. We also propose static load balancing techniques
for the computation distribution between threads, that diminish the disadvantage of the master thread assuming all inter-process
communication due to limitations often imposed by the message passing library. Both improvements are implemented as compile-time
optimizations and are further experimentally evaluated. An overall comparison of the above parallel programming styles on
SMP clusters based on micro-kernel experimental evaluation is further provided, as well. 相似文献

A New Methodology for Efficient Classification of Multispectral Satellite Images Using Neural Network Techniques 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A methodology based on self-organizing feature maps and indexing techniques for time and memory efficient neural network training and classification of large volumes of remotely sensed data is presented. Results on land-cover classification of multispectral satellite images using two popular neural models show orders of magnitude of speedup with respect to both training and classification times. The generality of the proposed methodology is demonstrated with a dramatic improvement of the classification time of the k-nearest neighbors statistical classifier. 相似文献

The continuous increase of the computational power of programmable processors has established them as an attractive design
alternative, for implementation of the most computationally intensive applications, like video compression. To enforce this
trend, designers implementing applications on programmable platforms have to be provided with reliable and in-depth data and
instruction analysis that will allow for the early selection of the most appropriate application for a given set of specifications.
To address this need, we introduce a new methodology for early and accurate estimation of the number of instructions required
for the execution of an application, together with the number of data memory transfers on a programmable processor. The high-level
estimation is achieved by a series of mathematical formulas; these describe not only the arithmetic operations of an application,
but also its control and addressing operations, if it is executed on a programmable core. The comparative study, which is
done using three popular processors (ARM, MIPS, and Pentium), shows the high efficiency and accuracy of the methodology proposed,
in terms of the number of executed (micro-)instructions (i.e. performance) and the number of data memory transfers (i.e. memory
power consumption). Using the proposed methodology we estimated an average deviation of 23% in our estimated figures compared
with the measurements taken from the real execution on the CPUs.

The excitation of a whispering gallery resonator by a surface wave guided in a dielectric slab is analyzed with a rigorous volume-integral-equation approach. The analysis is based on the Green's function concept and the application of the entire-domain Galerkin technique through expansion of the electric field in the resonator in terms of cylindrical wave functions. The algorithm developed yields highly accurate results for the transmission and reflection coefficients in the waveguide. The radiated far field is computed, and the effect of the excitation of a whispering gallery mode on the radiation pattern is studied. 相似文献

A new systematic framework for nonlinear observer design that allows the concurrent estimation of the process state variables together with key unknown process or sensor disturbances is proposed. The nonlinear observer design problem is addressed within a similar methodological framework as the one introduced in [N. Kazantzis, C. Kravaris, Nonlinear observer design using Lyapunov's auxiliary theorem, Systems Control Lett. 34 (1998) 241; A.J. Krener, M. Xiao, Nonlinear observer design in the Siegel domain, SIAM J. Control Optim. 41 (2002) 932.] for state estimation purposes only. From a mathematical standpoint, the problem under consideration is addressed through a system of first-order singular PDEs for which a rather general set of solvability conditions is derived. A nonlinear observer is then designed with a state-dependent gain that is computed from the solution of the system of singular PDEs. Under the aforementioned conditions, both state and disturbance estimation errors converge to zero with assignable rates. The convergence properties of the proposed nonlinear observer are tested through simulation studies in an illustrative example involving a biological reactor. 相似文献

This paper introduces a new nonparametric estimation approach inspired from quantum mechanics. Kernel density estimation associates a function to each data sample. In classical kernel estimation theory the probability density function is calculated by summing up all the kernels. The proposed approach assumes that each data sample is associated with a quantum physics particle that has a radial activation field around it. Schrödinger differential equation is used in quantum mechanics to define locations of particles given their observed energy level. In our approach, we consider the known location of each data sample and we model their corresponding probability density function using the analogy with the quantum potential function. The kernel scale is estimated from distributions of K-nearest neighbours statistics. In order to apply the proposed algorithm to pattern classification we use the local Hessian for detecting the modes in the quantum potential hypersurface. Each mode is assimilated with a nonparametric class which is defined by means of a region growing algorithm. We apply the proposed algorithm on artificial data and for the topography segmentation from radar images of terrain. 相似文献
