Training in advanced cardiac life support

The nationally recognized training and certification program in Advanced Cardiac Life Support consists of lecture material and a new concept in training and testing for the practical skills of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. The course content follows closely the concepts of advanced life support as explained in the standards on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiac care.     

Theoretical study of flow, pressure and solute concentration in double membrane systems

Spinach chloroplasts exposed to iodide can be washed free of the bulk of the iodide. In the presence of lactoperoxidase and H2O2, iodide can be introduced into chloroplasts in high amounts and in non diffusible forms. The resultant particles, which have been named iodochloroplasts, extrude their iodide upon stimulation by light. The form and the amount of extruded iodide bears a definite relationship to the amount of incident light. A flash of marginally effective light is additive to the next such flash even after a lapse of 10 min of darkness. These and other properties of iodochloroplasts may make them of great use in the study of intermediate reactions of photosynthesis.     

FH-Sydney 1 and 2: two novel frameshift mutations in exon 10 of the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene detected by heteroduplex formation

We report two novel frameshift mutations in exon 10 of the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene that lead to familial hypercholesterolemia in separate lineages. The lesions, FH-Sydney 1 and FH-Sydney 2, were detected by a modified heteroduplex analysis of exon-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified DNA, and characterized at the molecular level by sequencing. Restriction enzyme digestion of PCR amplified DNA confirmed the presence of the mutant alleles in affected family members and their absence in nonaffected family members in both lineages. FH-Sydney 1 is a 4-bp duplication at position 1373, while FH-Sydney 2 is a 2-bp deletion at position 1478. The predicted result of both mutations is the premature truncation of the receptor at stop codons generated downstream of the mutations. Neither mutation was detected in a survey of 54 unrelated familial hypercholesterolemia patients.     

Regional drug delivery I: permeability characteristics of the rat 6-day-old air pouch model of inflammation

PURPOSE: To determine the permeability characteristics of the rat air pouch model of inflammation using permeability extremes within which the NSAIDs S[+] ibuprofen, piroxicam and diclofenac could be evaluated. METHODS: Permeability was calculated using concentration data obtained following intrapouch and intravenous administration of [3H]-water, [14C]-urea, [14C]-inulin and [125I]-albumin and compared to similar data obtained for the three NSAIDs. RESULTS: Similar permeability values (5-6.5 ml hr-1) were obtained for the three NSAIDS which fell between the permeability extremes of the molecular weight markers [3H]-water (9.7 ml hr-1), [14C]-urea (6.8 ml hr-1), [14C]-inulin (1.0 ml hr-1) and [125I]-albumin (0.6 ml hr-1). Coadministration of equipotent anti-inflammatory doses of the NSAIDs did not affect local blood flow to the air pouch (as assessed by urea kinetics) but did reduced vascular permeability (as assessed by albumin flux into the pouch). CONCLUSIONS: Comparison of the NSAIDs with the permeabilities of the molecular weight markers indicates that a perfusion rate limitation probably exists. Systemic absorption is complete over the first two hours following intrapouch administration of the NSAIDs, therefore albumin flux into the pouch is insufficient to materially affect the permeability of the NSAIDs. However, subsequently (post 5hr) albumin concentration in the pouch rises sufficiently to lower the effective flux of the NSAIDs.
