Grigorii Valentinovich Samsonov: Novosibirsk Period in the Study of Borides

This paper, dedicated to the memory of Grigorii Valentinovich Samsonov (15 February 1918 – 22 December 1975) [1, 2], corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, gives a brief survey of the fruitful cooperation of this prominent researcher in materials science with the scientific community of the city of Novosibirsk. Results that have come from cooperation with G. V. Samsonov are unique indeed. They are related to the study of phase equilibria in boron-containing systems, mechanisms of interactions between boron and metals, and synthesis of high-melting borides (in particular, in the ultradisperse state). A vast amount of research has been focused on the development of coatings based on various modifications of boron nitride and related materials.

Herbert F. Wright (1907–1990): Obituary.

Announces the death in Tennessee of H. F. Wright, a pioneer in ecological psychology. Wright, using ideas generated by a research group, defined the units and categories by which both the behaviors of children and the facts of their situations could be analyzed. Wright and his staff developed both methods for comparing town and city children and theory to illuminate the environmental qualities involved. A general enthalpy method for modeling solidification processes

In the present work, a general implicit source-based enthalpy method is presented for the analysis of solidification systems. The proposed approach is both robust and efficient. The performance of the method is illustrated by application to a number of problems taken from recent metallurgical literature.

The effect of different protein diets on longevity and various biochemical parameters of aged rats]

In this work 23 month old rats were fed for 200 days with different protein diets (NT-diet: 19% protein, 72% of animal origin and LP-diet: 8.8% protein exclusively of vegetable origin). Some metabolic parameters and lifespan (on the base of a 50% death-rate) were determined. The relations of the liver free amino acids glycine + alanine and tyrosine + phenylalanine + branched chain amino acids and the ratio of phenylalanine/tyrosine were determined to be higher in the LP-group. Phenylalanine in liver and urea concentrations in liver and serum were lower in the LP-group. Furthermore the dopamine or serotonin levels were significantly lower in lateral and medial or lateral regions of the hypothalamus respectively in LP-diet fed rats. The norepinephrine content was not modified by the diets. The median lifespan of 23 month old rats was higher by 24% following LP-treatment. These results suggest that the protein component (amino acids) of different diets may modify metabolic parameters and lifespan of animals by mechanisms in which the central regulation may be involved.
