The purpose of this work was to estimate GHG emissions and energy balances for the future expansion of sugarcane ethanol fuel production in Mexico with one current and four possible future modalities. We used the life cycle methodology that is recommended by the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which distinguished the following five system phases: direct Land Use Change (LUC); crop production; biomass transport to industry; industrial processing; and ethanol transport to admixture plants. Key variables affecting total GHG emissions and fossil energy used in ethanol production were LUC emissions, crop fertilization rates, the proportion of sugarcane areas that are burned to facilitate harvest, fossil fuels used in the industrial phase, and the method for allocation of emissions to co-products. The lower emissions and higher energy ratios that were observed in the present Brazilian case were mainly due to the lesser amount of fertilizers applied, also were due to the shorter distance of sugarcane transport, and to the smaller proportion of sugarcane areas that were burned to facilitate manual harvest. The resulting modality with the lowest emissions of equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2e) was ethanol produced from direct juice and generating surplus electricity with 36.8 kgCO2e/GJethanol. This was achieved using bagasse as the only fuel source to satisfy industrial phase needs for electricity and steam. Mexican emissions were higher than those calculated for Brazil (27.5 kgCO2e/GJethanol) among all modalities. The Mexican modality with the highest ratio of renewable/fossil energy was also ethanol from sugarcane juice generating surplus electricity with 4.8 GJethanol/GJfossil. 相似文献

This paper shows that possibilities exist for maintaining current energy-related carbon emissions per capita in Mexico at almost constant levels in the long term. It is argued, however, that the identified carbon emissions reductions will not be achieved easily or rapidly, as they require a restructuring of Mexico's current technological base and an unusual degree of coordination among the government, lending institutions, equipment manufacturers, and final users. Such changes also will entail surmounting major institutional and financial barriers and creating a better international environment for technology transfer and capital lending. 相似文献

The temperature and the stress fields in the solidified layer and in the mold of finite thickness for a unidirectional casting process are investigated. Earlier solutions are extended to include the effect of the thermal capacity of the mold on the freezing front growth instability. A numerical solution is obtained for both the heat conduction and the residual stress problem. The results show that the perturbation in contact pressure tends asymptotically to a maximum value at larger times for the lower values of the thermal capacities of the mold materials. The magnitude of the contact pressure perturbation is decreased by the inclusion of the thermal capacity of the mold material, and this effect is enhanced for less distortive and thicker molds. The present article assumes that the thermal and mechanical problems are uncoupled along the casting mold interface. Despite this limitation, the results presented in this article indicate that a mold with a higher thermal capacity (or lower thermal diffusivity) might be less susceptible to thermoelastic instabilities associated with the contact pressure and its dependence on the thermal contact resistance at the casting mold interface. 相似文献

This article presents solar energy or specifically the solar photovoltaic (PV) development outlook in Malaysia. The paper first introduces the massive potential of solar energy in the country, the key players in the solar energy development and the early solar energy policies, and programmes in the country. The most important to the PV development is the Malaysia Building Integrated Photovoltaic initiative, which is presented in this paper followed by an explanation on the Feed-in Tariff recently introduced in the country to encourage new solar PV projects. The outlook for solar PV in Malaysia is optimistic and as the uptake of solar PV increases, the unit cost is coming down rapidly. Solar PV is expected to be the most competitive Renewable Energy (RE) source, with the potential to achieve grid parity for electrical power in the country in the near future, and surpassing all other REs combined by 2050. 相似文献

The production of thermally concentrated fruit juices uses temperatures high enough to achieve at least a 5-log reduction of pathogenic bacteria that can occur in raw juice. However, the transportation and storage of concentrates at low temperatures prior to final packaging is a common practice in the juice industry and introduces a potential risk for postconcentration contamination with pathogenic bacteria. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the likelihood of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella surviving in cranberry, lemon, and lime juice concentrates at or above temperatures commonly used for transportation or storage of these concentrates. This study demonstrates that cranberry, lemon, and lime juice concentrates possess intrinsic antimicrobial properties that will eliminate these bacterial pathogens in the event of postconcentration recontamination. Bacterial inactivation was demonstrated under all conditions; at least 5-log Salmonella inactivation was consistently demonstrated at -23 degrees C (-10 degrees F), at least 5-log E. coli O157:H7 inactivation was consistently demonstrated at -11 degrees C (12 degrees F), and at least 5-log L. monocytogenes inactivation was consistently demonstrated at 0 degrees C (32 degrees F). 相似文献

The aim of the present paper is to investigate numerically the energy separation mechanism and flow phenomena within a vortex tube. A 3D computational domain has been generated considering the quarter of the geometry and assuming periodicity in the Azimuthal direction which was found to exhibit correctly the general behaviour expected from a vortex tube. Air is selected as the working fluid. The flow predictions reported here are based upon four turbulence models, namely, the k–?, k–ω and SST k–ω two-equations models and the second moment closure model (RSM). The models results are compared to experimental data obtained from the literature. Four cases have been considered by changing the inlet pressure from 200 up to 380 kPa. It has been observed that all the above mentioned models are capable of predicting fairly well the general flow features but only the advanced RSM model is capable of matching correctly the measured cold and hot outlet temperatures. All the other models over predict the mean temperature difference by values up to twice the measured data. 相似文献

Five different types of Iraqi gasoline samples were studied extensively to determine the total amount of the aromatic hydrocarbons using solvent extraction. The extracted aromatics were further studied using Ir and H-nmr spectroscopy. Relative proton values were adopted as additivity parameters to calculate the research octane number (RON) employing multiparametric regressional analysis. We develop and validate a novel numerical algorithm for the simulation of axisymmetric single-phase fluid flow phenomena in porous and permeable media. In this new algorithm, the two-dimensional parabolic partial differential equation for fluid flow is transformed into an explicit finite-difference operator problem. The latter is solved by making use of an extended Krylov subspace method (EKSM) constructed with both positive and inverse powers of the finite-difference operator. A significant advantage of the method of solution presented in this paper is that simulations of pressure can be obtained at a multitude of times with practically the same efficiency as that of a single-time simulation. Moreover, the usage of inverse powers of the finite-difference operator provides a substantial increase in efficiency with respect to that of standard Krylov subspace methods. Tests of numerical performance with respect to analytical solutions for point and line sources validate the accuracy of the developed method of solution. We also validate the algorithm by making comparisons between analytical and numerical solutions in the Laplace transform domain. Additional tests of accuracy and efficiency are performed against a commercial simulator for spatially complex and anisotropic models of permeable media. 相似文献

The kinetics of isothermal crystallisation of palm stearin, palm kernel olein and their blends (20–80 g/100 g palm stearin with 20 g/100 g increment) were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The mechanism of crystallisation (n) was calculated by applying the Avrami equation using the crystallisation curves obtained at 10, 15 and 20 °C. The DSC isothermal crystallisation data at 10, 15 and 20 °C fitted well into the Avrami equation over the entire fractional crystallisation with correlation coefficient always greater than 0.98. Based on the Avrami exponent obtained, the palm stearin and palm kernel olein have different nucleation and growth mechanisms. The suggested mechanism for palm kernel olein was high nucleation rate at the beginning of crystallisation, which decreased with time, and plate-like growth (n = 2). On the other hand, the mechanism for palm stearin was instantaneous heterogeneous nucleation followed by spherulitic growth (n = 3). For blends of palm stearin and palm kernel olein, the mechanisms of crystallisation were 2 and 3 depending on the composition of the blends and crystallisation temperatures. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal and antioxidant activities of curcumin, ascorbic acid and the mixture of these two compounds. For the antifungal assay, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using Candida strains (ATCC and clinical isolates). Curcumin alone inhibited growth of Candida albicans yeast cells, whereas ascorbic acid did not present effects. However, when the mixture of ascorbic acid and curcumin was assayed to determine the association of the two compounds, the curcumin MIC decreased 5- to 10-fold. In the antioxidant assays, the sum of the alone activities of curcumin and ascorbic acid were lower than the activity of the two-compound mixture. This study highlights the importance of the association between two common antioxidants in foods, to improve the antifungal and antioxidant activities of curcumin (in vitro), and can be applied to Candida spp. infection and diseases associated with oxidative stress. 相似文献
