Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one pharmaceutical compound, has been treated in aqueous solutions with catalysts (copper and cobalt type perovskites and cobalt–alumina) and promoters (activated carbons). Hydrogen peroxide and saturated carboxylic acids were identified as intermediates. The effects of adsorption and pH have been investigated. Removal of the starting SMX accomplished with ozone alone is a fast process but catalytic or promoted ozonation is needed to significantly reduce the resulting organic carbon. SMX is, thus, mainly removed through direct ozone reaction while hydroxyl radical oxidation is the mechanism of removal the remaining TOC. The kinetics of the process has also been investigated. Perovskite catalytic ozonation resulted to be a chemical control process and apparent rate constants for homogeneous and heterogeneous ozonation were determined. For activated carbon ozonation, external diffusion of ozone to solid particles controlled the process rate.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although some segments of the population continue to suffer from undernutrition, other groups exhibit excess weight gain, resulting in the coexistence of undernutrition and obesity and leading to a dual nutritional burden. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between stunting and overweight in preschool children from Latin American and Caribbean countries. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from children 0 to 5 years of age from 79 nationally representative surveys, compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Database on Child Growth and Malnutrition. This database defines stunting as low height-for-age and overweight as high weight-for-height. These variables were explored with the use of simple and multiple regression models. RESULTS: There were significant differences between subregions in the prevalence of stunting: the prevalence was 7.4% in the Caribbean, 11.3% in South America, and 20.4% in Central America (p < .001). In contrast, the estimated prevalence of overweight was similar between subregions. The overall prevalence rates of stunting and overweight in Latin America and the Caribbean in the year 2000 were 13.7% and 4.3%, respectively. We found an inverse relationship (r = -0.3) between the prevalence rates of overweight and stunting, overall and within subregions. South America exhibited the highest slope and intercept on the regression of overweight on stunting. CONCLUSIONS: Different subregions of Latin America and the Caribbean have different prevalence rates of childhood stunting but similar prevalence rates of overweight. There is an inverse relationship between stunting and overweight. The South American subregion had the highest increase and prevalence of overweight of the Latin American region.  相似文献

In this work the adsorption of phenol solutions onto activated carbon Calgon F400 has been studied. The carbon was modified by acid treatment, using soxhlet extraction with hydrochloric acid 2N for 120 cycles. The treatment did not affect significantly the surface area of the activated carbon but affected significatively the different functional groups, and thus its adsorption properties. Tóth model reproduced satisfactorily the experimental isotherm data and an adsorption enthalpy of -17.9 kJ mol-1 was found, which indicates that the process is exothermic. The pH affected significatively to the adsorption process and an empirical polynomial equation was able to reproduce maximum capacity as a function of pH. The isotherms obtained at pH 3 and 7 are very similar and showed a higher adsorption capacity compared with that obtained at pH 13. The use of phosphate buffer solutions decreased the maximum phenol adsorption capacity, due to the competitive adsorption between the phenol and phosphates. Finally, it was demonstrated that the acid treatment introduced chloride ions into the carbon, giving it properties of ion exchanger.  相似文献

To ascertain the role of Zn(II) as an allosteric modulator on P2X4R, QM/MM molecular dynamic simulations were performed on the WT and two P2X4R mutants suggested by previous electrophysiological data to affect Zn(II) binding. The Gibbs free energy for the reduction of the putative P2X4R Zn(II) binding site by glutathione was estimated at −22 kcal/mol. Simulations of the WT P2X4R head domain revealed a flexible coordination sphere dominated by an octahedral geometry encompassing C126, N127, C132, C149, C159 and a water molecule. The C132A mutation disrupted the metal binding site, leading to a coordination sphere with a majority of water ligands, and a displacement of the metal ion towards the solvent. The C132A/C159A mutant exhibited a tendency towards WT-like stability by incorporating the R148 backbone to the coordination sphere. Thus, the computational findings agree with previous experimental data showing Zn(II) modulation for the WT and C132A/C159A variants, but not for the C132A mutant. The results provide molecular insights into the nature of the Zn(II) modulation in P2X4R, and the effect of the C132A and C132A/C159A mutations, accounting for an elusive modulation mechanism possibly occurring in other extracellular or membrane protein.  相似文献

We consider the problem of joint congestion control and resource allocation in spatial-TDMA wireless networks. The design problem is posed as a utility maximization problem subject to link rate constraints which involve both transmission scheduling and power allocation. Starting from the performance limitations of a centralized optimization based on global network information, we proceed systematically in our development of two distributed and transparent protocols that rely on local information only. In the process, we introduce a novel decomposition method for convex optimization, establish its convergence for the utility maximization problem, and demonstrate how it suggests a distributed solution based on TCP/AQM and incremental updates of the transmission schedule. We develop a two-step procedure for finding the schedule updates and suggest two schemes for distributed link scheduling and power control under realistic interference models. Although the final protocols are suboptimal, we isolate and quantify the performance losses incurred by each simplification and demonstrate strong performance in examples.

BACKGROUND: Skin color, acid content and changes in other chemical components have been developed as indicators of maturation in fruits of the Capsicum type. RESULTS: Fruit growth and ripening in four hot pepper accessions (CS) from C. frutescens (CS376) and from C. annuum (CS219, CS049 and CS032) were monitored in three commercial Colombian Amazonic orchards. The time between fruit setting and commercial pepper fruit maturity was 41 ± 5 days for CS219, while CS032, CS049 and CS376 required 47 ± 3 days. Three stages of development were identified. The first stage was cell division in the accessions and a transient peak in respiration rate in CS049. A second stage of fruit growth occurred due to maximum cell expansion and some transient peaks of respiration rate also took place. Finally, a plateau occurred as fruit reached full maturity and followed typical non‐climacteric behavior. CS032 and CS219 were pungent with increasing levels of alkaloids (capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin) during fruit growth, although CS376 with its constant and higher levels of the former capsaicinoids early in fruit growth was not pungent, and neither was CS049. Morphological traits and fresh and dry weight together with color coordinates could be used to discriminate among accessions as revealed by two axes of the canonical discriminant analysis (99.9% total variance explained). CONCLUSIONS: In general, the time from fruit set and the apex skin color changes and accompanying morphological traits, were reasonable indicators of maturity in Amazonian hot pepper fruits. The effect of soy protein concentrate (SPC) on the rheological and calorimetric properties of corn, wheat, and cassava starches was assessed. SPC increased To values and decreased the ΔH of all tested starches, which could be related to lower availability of water for starch gelatinization and/or to the interactions between SPC and amorphous regions of starch granules. SPC and sugar addition modified the viscosity parameters (obtained through a rapid visco‐analyser) of starch pastes, which was attributed to an increase in solid content and to the interaction of proteins with the starch dispersed phase. Frequency sweeps were carried out with a rheometer on gels containing starch, SPC, and sucrose. SPC raised storage and loss modulus, producing more consistent starch gels. Besides, penetration tests showed that SPC steadily increased starch gel firmness. Scanning electron micrographs showed that protein concentrate produced gels with closer structures. Summarizing, the starch and SPC in the gels obtained were expected to be arranged in a two‐phase system. Results showed that it is possible to achieve different textures for starch dessert formulations.  相似文献
