Influence of alloying additives on corrosion and hydrogen permeation through commercial aluminium in alkaline solution

The influence of alloying additives on the extent of corrosion and hydrogen permeation through aluminium of different grades such as 2S, 3S, 26S and 57S, in 0.01 M NaOH has been investigated using weight loss measurements and electropermeation. It is found that the extent of self corrosion and hydrogen permeated through different grades of commercial aluminium follow the order: 3S > 2S > 26S > 57S. The influence of incorporating zinc and indium either alone or in combination on self corrosion and permeation current has also been studied. It is found that ternary alloys of both 26S and 57S containing zinc and indium give considerably lesser values of self corrosion rate and permeation current.     

Incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in 153 pregnancies with ultrasound detected fetal abnormalities

We report a caroticocavernous fistula (CCF) treated by an endovascular procedure in a young woman with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, with severe bilateral carotid and vertebral artery dysplasia. The CCF, which appeared after minor trauma, was successfully occluded by a detachable balloon introduced into the venous side by an arterial approach. Six previously published cases are reviewed, five successfully treated. The difficulties and risks of the endovascular procedure due to the vascular changes, are emphasised. The possibility of the venous approach is discussed.     

Emergence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus as an important cause of diarrhea in Malaysia

Vibrio parahaemolyticus was isolated from 47 of 2,699 stools examined primarily for the exclusion of cholera. All strains grew well in alkaline peptone water containing 0.5% NaCl and in Monsur's medium. Serotyping showed them to be of various types. Adults were mainly affected. The importance of looking for V. parahaemolyticus in clinical specimens from cases of diarrhea is emphasized.

Free vibration analysis of cylindrical liquid storage tanks

Cylindrical liquid storage tanks anchored to rigid base slabs are considered. By using finite elements for both liquid and tankwall, the natural frequencies of the coupled system are presented in graphical form for various tank dimensions, liquid depths and wall thicknesses. From the mode shapes it is concluded that during coupled vibration a large core of liquid is practically unaffected.
