Squamous cell carcinoma complicating perianal hidradenitis suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa or Verneuil's disease is usually a chronic, recurrent, suppurative and cicatricial disorder. It most often affects the skin of the axillae, groins and perineum, and less commonly the buttocks and upper thighs. A squamous cell carcinoma located in the hidradenitis-affected area is a rare complication. We present a review of the twenty-six published cases adding one of our own.

Treatments for diabetes in Ethiopia are at present only available in hospitals so many patients must travel great distances to obtain insulin, tablets, and diabetes education. We reviewed all 496 people with diabetes attending the diabetic clinic at Gondar Hospital (281 with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (DM) and 215 with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) DM. Half of the patients came from rural areas, all but 3 of them travelling more than 20 km, one-quarter of them more than 100 km and 33 patients (13%) more than 180 km. It is likely that many patients who fail to attend from the more distant areas have died. We are developing a scheme which would enable diabetic patients to be treated at rural health centres by nurses trained in the principles of diabetes care which could greatly improve the outlook for diabetic patients in Ethiopia.

Measurement of Electron Mobility in Alq3 From Optical Modulation Measurements in Multilayer Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

The dynamic characteristics of multilayer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) determine the refresh rate in display applications, and are of great importance for practical organic displays. They also serve as an important tool in studying the transport mechanisms in organic conductors. Here, the modulation characteristics of several conventional small-molecule OLED structures [consisting of ITO/PEDOT:PSS(50 nm)/TPD(50 nm)/Alq₃(various)/LiF(1 nm)/Al(90 nm)] are measured and analyzed in terms of mobility in and thickness of the Alq ₃ layer. Their optical response was shown to be limited by electron transport across the Alq₃. Extracted electron mobilities were about 2-4times10^-6 cm²/Vmiddots (consistent with that reported in the literature) and near-identical values for mobility were obtained from devices of different thicknesses, suggesting that this method measures mobility independent of interface trap charging. This novel technique is a complement to large signal time of flight or delay time measurements (which can include interface and trap charging during the measurement) and can serve as a flexible method to study transport in actual devices     

Expression of human muscarinic cholinergic receptors in tobacco

The T lymphocyte beta 2-adrenergic receptor (beta 2AR) density and function were compared in 15 patients suffering acute myocardial infarction and 10 patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Density was determined using radioligand binding with 125IPIN, and function by in vitro cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) production. In patients suffering acute myocardial infarction, T lymphocyte beta 2AR density (823.8 +/- 480 sites/cell) was slightly but not significantly different from that in patients with stable CAD (629 +/- 301 sites/cell). There was no difference in T lymphocyte cAMP production at baseline (1.11 +/- 0.70 vs 1.04 +/- 0.49 pM/10(6) cells) or after isoproterenol stimulation (2.53 +/- 1.63 vs 2.62 +/- 2.05 pM/10(6) cells), respectively. Further study is necessary to determine if beta 2AR numbers on T lymphocytes are significantly increased after acute myocardial infarction.

GaAs MESFET欧姆接触可靠性研究进展

报道了ｎ型ＧａＡｓ上欧姆接触的制备及其可靠性，以及基于欧姆接触退经的ＧａＡｓＭＥＳＰＥＴ的失效分析，结果表明，ｎ型ＧａＡｓ上欧姆接触的制备已日趋成熟，接触电阻有所减小，表面形貌及热稳定性方面都得到了很大程度的提高，接触材料也日趋丰富ＧａＡｓＭＥＳＦＥＴ的失效分析方法也有明显改进。     

井下微地震裂缝测试技术在长庆油田的应用

裂缝方位和几何尺寸决定了井网的部署、射孔的方位、压裂设计的优化等，直接影响着低渗透油田开发的好坏。长庆油田采用井下微地震技术进一步认识到水力裂缝延伸的复杂性，明确了压裂裂缝真实延伸情况，在指导油田开发中的井网部署、压裂优化设计、压裂后的效果评估方面将发挥重要作用。
