Companies delivering systems facilities such as turnkey plants tend to work in a project-oriented manner that brings out problems in terms of cooperation and coordination of responsibilities, duties and authority. This demands special skills of the project manager. He will serve as an integrator of various specializations rather than as an expert. The administrative tools he will use depend on the size and other characteristics of the project.     

Effects of ethanol intake on lipoprotein lipase activity in adipose tissue of fasting subjects

Ethanol (ca. 1 g/kg body weight) was given alone or together with glucose or lipid (mixed triglycerides) perorally to young, fasting subjects. The changes with time (0–6 hr) of lipoprotein lipase activity (LLA) in adipose tissue, plasma glycerol, triglyceride, insulin, blood glucose, and alcohol concentrations were followed. A maximal mean blood alcohol concentration of 0.09% (w/v) was obtained 1 hr after ingestion with no apparent intoxicating effects. Ethanol intake prevented the previously observed [Nilsson-Ehle, P., S. Carlström and P. Belfrage,Scand. J. Clin. Lab. Invest. 35∶373 (1975)] glucose-induced rapid elevation of adipose tissue LLA but had small effects on this enzymatic activity when given alone or together with lipid. Confirming results by others, ethanol intake decreased plasma glycerol concentration and increased plasma triglycerides, especially after intake of lipid. It is suggested that ethanol intake interferes with the normal carbohydrate-induced elevation of adipose tissue LLA after a mixed meal, thereby decreasing the removal capacity for circulating dietary lipid and causing enhanced and prolonged alimentary hyperlipemia.     

A thermodynamic evaluation of the iron - tungsten system

A new evaluation of the Fe-W system has been made using a magnetic multi-sublattice subregular model. A set of parameter values describing the Gibbs energy of each individual phase is given. The treatment of the μ phase is based upon a three-sub-lattice model.     

The analysis of urinary hormonal steroids

A survey is given of current trends in the assay of urinary hormonal steroids. Both group assay methodology and assays for single urinary steroids are reviewed as are semi-automated and automated procedures and high-resolution and high-capacity techniques, as applied to the profile analysis of urinary steroid hormones.     

Microcomputer comparison

This paper illustrates a precise method for comparing microcomputer instruction sets for the purpose of language implementation. The standard of comparison is the Concurrent Pascal interpreter for the PDP 11/45 minicomputer. The paper identifies the most frequent virtual instructions and their implementation on the PDP 11/45 computer. It then compares the speed and size of interpreters implemented on various 16-bit microcomputers. It also includes the process switching times of these computers.     

Electrical noise characteristics of carbon black–filled linear low density polyethylene near the percolation threshold

Electrical noise measurements have been used to study electrical conduction in carbon black-filled linear low density polyethylene. Measurements of the resistivity, real part of the relative permittivity, thermal noise, and current noise have been carried out for carbon black contents and temperatures below, near, and above the percolation threshold for electrical conduction. The current noise shows a 1 /f^α frequency dependence, with α near unity close to the percolation threshold, but increasing to 1.5 at higher resistivities or temperatures.     

Long-term Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds from Waterborne Paints – Methods of Comparison

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from five different waterborne paints was measured in small climatic chambers under standard conditions over a one-year period. The aims of the study were to evaluate the time emission profiles and to develop methods for comparison of different paints. The paints were applied to tin-plated steel sheets. VOCs were sampled on Tenax TA and analysed by thermal desorption and gas chromatography. The chamber concentrations increased rapidly during the first few hours and then decreased as the emission rates dropped. A model expression including an exponentially decreasing emission rate of the paint film, the air exchange rate, and a normalization of the film thickness was fitted to the concentration versus time data. The time required to reach a given emission rate was estimated and found suitable for comparison of the emission of VOCs from the paints. It was found that data sampled within three weeks or less may be sufficient to predict the emission of VOCs up to one year. Reduction of long-term emissions may be achieved most efficiently by (1) substituting a more -volatile VOC whose emission is controlled by evaporation for a less volatile VOC characterized by diffusion-controlled emission and (2) reducing the paint film thickness rather than reducing the initial VOC content of the paint.     

Chemical composition and in-vitro degradability of major chemical constituents of red clover harvested at different stages of maturity

The contents of extractives, starch, crude protein, non-starch polysaccharides and Klason lignin were determined in red clover harvested at six different stages of maturity. Chemical analysis of residues after incubation with rumen liquor in vitro revealed that the degradability of starch was 100% and of crude protein about 80% at all harvest times. The degradability of non-starch polysaccharides decreased from 76 to 51% during maturation and no degradation of Klason lignin was noticed. At all harvest times xylose was the least degraded non-starch polysaccharide residue followed by glucose and rhamnose. During maturation the greatest decrease in in-vitro degradability was noticed for the xylose residues followed by the glucose and the mannose residues.     

A Method for Evaluation of QRS Shape Features Using a Mathematical Model for the ECG

Automated classification of ECG patterns is facilitated by careful selection of waveform features. This paper presents a method for evaluating the properties of features that describe the shape of a QRS complex. By examining the distances in the feature space for a class of nearly similar complexes, shape transitions which are poorly described by the feature under investigation can be readily identified. To obtain a continuous range of waveforms, which is required by the method, a mathematical model is used to simulate the QRS complexes.

A new evaluation of the C−Fe−W system has been made using a magnetic two-sublattice subregular model for the interstitial solution phases, a multi-sublattice model for intermetallic phases and ternary carbides, and an ordinary subregular solution model for the liquid phase. A set of parameters describing the Gibbs energy of each phase is given.
