The Parallel Programming Interface for Distributed Data (PPIDD) library provides an interface, suitable for use in parallel scientific applications, that delivers communications and global data management. The library can be built either using the Global Arrays (GA) toolkit, or a standard MPI-2 library. In this paper we build a multi-theoretical and multi-level framework for analyzing Global Crisis Networks (GCN). These information-centric, heterarchically structured networks are instantiated in response to major disasters with global impact. The instantiation of GCN is conceived as a problem of collective action. Its success depends on multi-level preparedness, and network orchestration and participation. With this framework we analyze the SARS outbreak in 2002 and its successful containment in 2003. We analyze two individual country cases, Canada and China and discuss the role of the network orchestrator, the World Health Organizations. The paper concludes with implications for research and practice.  相似文献

A new series of pyrochlore type ceramic semiconducting oxides in Ca-Ce-Ti-M-O (M = Nb or Ta) system has been synthesized by the conventional ceramic route. The electrical conductivity measurements show that these oxides exhibit semiconducting behavior and the conductivity increases with the Ce content in the compound. Activation energy of the current carriers is in the range of 0.5-1.6 eV. The electrical conductivity in these oxides is due to the presence of Ce3+, which remains in the reduced state without being oxidized to Ce4+ by structural stabilization. The photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis corroborate the presence of Ce in the 3+ state. Impedance spectral analysis is carried out to evaluate the transport properties and indicates that the conduction in these compounds is mainly due to electronic contribution. The X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis establishes that these oxides belong to a cubic pyrochlore type structure.  相似文献

Metamodels, also known as surrogate models, can be used in place of computationally expensive simulation models to increase computational efficiency for the purposes of design optimization or design space exploration. The accuracy of these metamodels varies with the scale and complexity of the underlying model. In this article, three metamodelling methods are evaluated with respect to their capabilities for modelling high-dimensional, nonlinear, multimodal functions. Methods analyzed include kriging, radial basis functions, and support vector regression. Each metamodelling technique is used to model a set of single output functions with dimensionality ranging from fifteen to fifty independent variables and modality ranging from one to ten local maxima. The number of points used to train the models is increased until a predetermined error threshold is met. Results show that kriging metamodels perform most consistently across a variety of functions, although radial basis functions and support vector regression are very competitive for highly multimodal functions and functions with large local gradients, respectively. Support vector regression metamodels consistently offer the shortest build and prediction times when applied to large scale multimodal problems.  相似文献

A geometrically nonlinear, simply supported beam under the influence of time-dependent external forcing serves as a testbed to demonstrate application of the optimal spatiotemporal reduced order modeling (OPSTROM) framework proposed in Part I of this work. Fully resolved simulations, which are relatively expensive to perform, are used to accurately predict the beam response for a few forcing parameters. More affordable simulations are achieved with a conventional finite-difference scheme by coarsening the computational grid in space and time. Discretization errors are reduced with OPSTROM as subgrid-scale models are designed to account for the underlying space-time statistical structure using principles of mean-square error minimization, conditional expectations and stochastic estimation. When included in the under-resolved simulations, these optimal subgrid-scale models are shown to significantly improve the accuracy of predictions for both periodic and chaotic response types. This improved accuracy is further demonstrated through a set of numerical experiments designed to capture the complex bifurcation behavior of the beam response.  相似文献

This article takes the history of Polaroid photography as an opportunity to question a presupposition that underpins much thinking on photography: the split between industrial (i.e. useful) applications of photography and its fine art (i.e. aesthetic) manifestations. Critics as ideologically opposed as Peter Bunnell and Abigail Solomon-Godeau steadfastly maintain the existence of this separation of utility and aesthetics in photography, even if they take contrasting views on its meaning and desirability. However, Polaroid, at one time the second largest company in the photo industry, not only enjoyed close relations with those key representatives of fine art photography, Ansel Adams and the magazine Aperture, but it also intermittently asserted the ‘essentially aesthetic’ nature of its commercial and industrial activities in its own internal publications. The divide between industry and aesthetics is untenable, then, but this does not mean that the two poles were reconciled at Polaroid. While Aperture may have underplayed its commercial connections and Polaroid may have retrospectively exaggerated its own contributions to the development of fine art photography, most interesting are the contradictions and tensions that arise when the industrial and the aesthetic come together. The present article draws on original research undertaken at the Polaroid Corporation archives held at the Baker Library, Harvard, as well as with the Ansel Adams correspondence with Polaroid, held at the Polaroid Collections in Concord, Massachusetts.  相似文献
